Finally, West Virginia is officially headed to the Big 12.

The Big East Conference announced Tuesday that West Virginia's membership had been "terminated" and it was no longer a league member after June 30. The Mountaineers will join the Big 12 for the 2012-13 academic season.

"Our membership in the Big 12 offers WVU significant advantages," West Virginia athletic director Oliver Luck said in a statement. "The Big 12 is a strong and vibrant conference academically and athletically. We look forward to the potential academic and athletic partnerships and financial opportunities that membership in the Big 12 offers."

Sources told that the Big East will receive $20 million from West Virginia, which is responsible for $10 million. The Big 12 is "loaning" West Virginia the remaining $10 million, but the school will only be responsible for paying back about half of that amount.

Luck said the agreement prohibits discussion of the settlement, but that no state or taxpayer funds, tuition or academic support monies will be used. Any settlement funding transferred will come from private sources and independently generated athletic revenues, Luck said.

Last week, reported West Virginia and the Big East reached a verbal settlement that would pay the Big East $20 million.

"West Virginia University has acknowledged and agreed that the Court in Monongalia County, WVa., will enter a judgment that the Big East Conference Bylaws are valid and enforceable, and will dismiss with prejudice all of West Virginia’s claims against the Conference," Big East commissioner John Marinatto said in a statement.

With West Virginia gone, the Big East currently has seven football members for the 2012 season. However, the league is trying to get Boise State to join a year early, sources told If the Big East is not able to find a replacement for West Virginia this fall, the remaining seven league members would have to scramble to find a 12th game.

Pittsburgh and Syracuse, which are headed to the ACC, will not try to leave the Big East this summer, sources told However, both schools will attempt to negotiate deals to allow them to join the ACC a year early in 2013.

West Virginia President Jim Clements said the school's Big 12 membership "is an investment in WVU's future. We're looking forward to the tremendous opportunities it presents – all across our university."

The Mountaineers were one of the Big East charter members in 1991 when the league formed its football conference.

Luck said the settlement with the Big East "closes a chapter and opens a new one filled with exciting possibilities for WVU’s future.  I’ve heard from Mountaineer fans across the country who have made it very clear that they are proud and honored to be heading into the Big 12.”

I think West Virginia is a decent fit for the Big 12. Not geographically of course, but I think they'll compete well in football and basketball. They should step right in and be in the upper half of the conference in those. Don't know about how they're other programs (track, baseball, etc) fit.

West Virginia officially headed to Big 12

As a Hokie but a WV kid I hate to see even more great rivalries going down the drain. When I was young the WV-Penn St rivalry was huge and I remember the day that I was out with my dad listening to the game when WV finally broke through and beat Penn St after years of frustration and hated to see that rivalry end. I feel the same way about the VA Tech and WV rivalry  which was made so insignificant by the two schools after years of great football and I feel the same way about WV losing Pitt to this ridiculous conference realignment. Let's be honest it does not make a bit of sense for WV (logistically speaking because they certainly had to jump from the sinking Big East ship) to go to the Big 12 and what makes even less sense is that the Big East would bringing in Boise,  San Diego St and possibly Houston and SMU???????? We all know that conference realignment is going to happen whether we like it or not and teams are going to go where they have to to get the big money but can we not have some sense of logic in this whole mess? Unfortunately we are all losing too many of the rivals that we love to hate and truthfully that takes so much of the enjoyment out of what I think is the best sport in the world, college football. I certainly wish WV the best in the Big 12 and even though it will be a tough road in a great football conference I would not count out WV against any of those teams including OK and TX, there program is always strong and if Dana can get his offense installed and understood they will be tough to slow down.

Syracuse is feeling a little unloved on V-day

Unfortunately for Syracuse and Pitt, Maryland and Duke will likely present them with a football challenge. I expect Syracuse to finish with 1 or 2 conference wins a year unless they drastically improve in all facets of the game.  5 and 7 in the Big East translates to 4 and 8 or worse in the ACC.

Pitt, just who is your coach now?  Good luck to you, as WVU's arch nemesis I will miss playing you guys.  I hope the Brawl gets scheduled.

You are a clown...WVU is the ONLY Big East team to beat teams like Oklahoma and SEC teams like Georgia recently. They will do just fine in the Big 12 which is VASTLY over-rated.

OK , will do!  I'm just wondering, what bowl do you think Syracuse will be going to as a member of the ACC?  My best guess is no bowl at all.  Syracuse and Pitt are currently members of the worst of the BCS conferences.  Once you move to the ACC and Big East football finally dies, guess what.  Syracuse and Pitt will be members of the worst of the BCS conferences.  Have fun beating Duke and Maryland and going 2-8 in ACC conference play.

Hahahaha. Espn reported it? You better get your facts straight. Considering ESPNs "sources" are basically McMurphy and Feldman, I say they didnt have it 1st. If you actually followed stories you would see that ESPN just rips stories from the better writers elsewhere. CBS had this story months ago also, it's just finally becoming official now. Carry on...
