Flordia A&M women's basketball player Shannon Washington was killed early Sunday morning after an argument with friend Starquineshia Palmer, according to the Tallahassee Police Department.

The Famuan reports that TPD officers arrived at the residence in question at approximately 2:05 a.m., after a stabbing had been reported. They found Washington with a stab wound in her neck from a kitchen knife. She was treated by the officers on the scene until medics arrived, then transferred to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Palmer, 20, had traveled from Central Florida to visit the victim for the weekend and was still in the apartment when officers arrived. She was later detained and charged with first-degree murder.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to Shannon's family and members of the Lady Rattlers Basketball Team," said FAMU President James H. Ammons in a press release. "For Shannon to be killed in the prime of her life is tragic and senseless. She had so much promise as a student athlete. This is a great loss for the university and our athletic program."

"It is truly a trying situation to lose a student-athlete that has come to us to further her education and excel at her sport," said Florida A&M coach LeDawn Gibson. "As a coach, this is the kind of incident you just hope you never have to deal with -- the death of one of your players at such a young age."

Washington, a Sarasota, Fla., native, was a junior college transfer from Illinois Valley Community College where she scored 1,101 points and led the Eagles to two Region IV championships and two trips to the NJCAA championships. Washington also led IVCC with 17.6 points and 9.3 rebounds a game and ranked 11th nationally in assists (5.3) and 17th in steals (3.5). In  her two years at IVCC, Washington led the Eagles to a 57-12 record.

A memorial ceremony was to be held in her honor Sunday night.

Its always a shame when someone is murdered. It's a shame that Shannon Washington was killed over a dispute.  Some people in society don't have the know how to deal with life and sometimes people are crazy.  In this case we will only know one side of the story.

Yes, you are. You are not the one to deem what is racist and what isn't racist. Your remark is just as racist as the one you are condemning.
And you are GAY. Blacks are just as racist, if not MORE racist than whites. And with incidents like this, it proves that people naming their kids after stars mixed with black names, are retarded.

Comments like the ones here about a person's name is why we have racism in America and why "white" people have so many developmental cognitive deficiencies
After a comment like that who is truly the racist?

I am not a making a racist comment, it is simply, an observation.

Comments like the ones here about a person's name is why we have racism in America and why "white" people have so many developmental cognitive deficiencies.  It is true and if you sit back and listen to their comments, you will see why we not only have racism in America but everywhere they reside.  I am not a making a racist comment, it is simply, an observation.  Don't get it twisted.  Every last person who directly said black and referred to the name is "white" and that is 100% correct.   Now see how further retarded you are by saying that you are not white, knowing you are.  LOL!  The thing that is so disturbing is that you have a kid who is dead and we talk about a name?  Are you kidding me, you senseless, mindless, wild, uncivilized beast.  If the shoe fits, wear it.

Starquineshia...really?  How is that a real name and how good of a friend do you have when she/he would stab you over an argument.

Starquineshia?????  Why do black people have to out of their way to make up stupid effin names!!!!
.....seriously?  Out of this ENTIRE article about an NCAA athlete losing her life WAY too early, killed by an apparent "friend", and THAT is what you get out of this story?????  Your parents failed you...I want to be mad at you and hate you for that ignorant comment, but I know it's not your fault. I hope you are able to change your way of thinking and see past the color of someone's skin.  A young woman lost her life...that's MUCH more important than what her friend's name was or whether she was african-american or not.  I pray that nothing ever happens to you or your family so that no one has the opportunity to make such an idiotic comment about you.

This is extremely sad news to read about. My sympathy goes out to the Washington family and friends. Its amazing people commenting on this article are debating if the woman was black or white, in fact it is stupid. It doesn't matter what color she was because she was human, and in God's eyes we are all the same. For the dude which called the woman a HO, there are probably some people which feel the same way about your mother. I'm not here to talk trash, but I am gonna comment on you ignorant "mfers" which have nothing better to do with your time except for debate what color the woman was, and how someone could name there child Starquineshia. She was probably named the same way your mother named you, which you probably have a stupid name as well... :)

God bless the Washington family, and my prayers go out to you....

The death of any person no older than Shannon Washington is profoundly tragic, but seriously:  who thinks naming their kid Starquineshia is a good idea?
