No. 2 prospect Mitch McGary goes with Michigan

Michigan couldn’t get a top-five prospect, right?

That was the popular line of thought for many throughout Mitch McGary’s recruitment. The last five-star recruit the Wolverines received a commitment from was Daniel Horton back in 2002, and John Beilein has never been known to pick up top-50 guys on a consistent basis.

With Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina, Florida and others in the mix, the Gary, Indiana native still always kept Michigan at or near the top of his list. On Thursday, McGary made it official – he’s going to be a Wolverine.

This is a monster commitment for Beilein and Michigan. He’s the No. 2-ranked prospect in the country, shooting up the charts with a dominant spring and summer for the SYF Players. Beilein runs an offense that allows for the big man to play multiple positions and do different things on the court, which is perfect for McGary.

McGary will fit in with Michigan and could take them to the next level in the Big Ten. He’s a high-energy big man whose attitude and personality are infectious to his teammates. He can score around the basket and also knock down face-up jumpers out to the arc. McGary runs the floor very well, and his shot-blocking ability and athleticism have improved greatly. Moreover, he is strong and makes an impact on the glass.

There are only two seniors on the Wolverines’ roster right now, Stu Douglass and Zack Novak. Tim Hardaway Jr. is poised to become a star on the perimeter, while Jordan Morgan is developing into a consistent option down low. With freshman Trey Burke set to be the point guard and Beilein’s usual assortment of shooters, Michigan is a Sweet 16 threat this season. With McGary and two other top-100 recruits – Glenn Robinson and Nik Stauskas – coming into the fold next year, do the Wolverines have Final Four potential?

That’s how big this commitment is for Michigan; it immediately makes them a major factor in 2012-13, and also potentially opens the door for more high-level recruits to make their way to Ann Arbor.

There’s no longer questioning whether Michigan can get a top-five recruit. The Wolverines just did.

When you type, all I hear is Boo hoo, michigan is better than us. sure we beat them in football the last few years, but in another year or two we will get stomped every year like we rightfully should by a higher power that earns its recruits. Everyone is right michigan didn't use to care about basketball, things change, now we are starting to become a threat and you are scared. You should be. Spartans aren't the michigan wonder child anymore. Hail to the Victors. or scUM as you so brilliantly, cleverly, heck geniusly put it. ha.

scUM is the best academic school in the country? I hope youre just trying to be funny because if not youre a freaking idiot. UNC Chapel Hill is a better school. So is California, and Virgina as well. Funny thing about scUM is that when the school gives stats for enrollment they include the students at scUM dearborn and scUM flint. Neither school requires the GPA that Ann Arbor requires. But when the publications rank schools they dont account for Flint or Dearborn. Weird isnt it?

If Michigan is such a great school why does MSU have more #1, top 5, and top 10 programs? The only thing that makes Michigan a top 5 public school is the fact that Ann Arbor only has roughly 7,000 undergrad students so they require nearly a 4.0 to get in. Now add in scUM Flint and their 2.0 requirement and scUM is one of the lowest if not the lowest in the big ten. MSU will not even consider someone without a 3.0 GPA. Michigan is the only school I know of that will accept someone with a 2.0 GPA.

said the Phoenix fan that likes the Coyotes. I'm not from Michigan, nor a fan. However based off the 2 cities(Phoenix/Michigan) you have no basis to talk on.
Just wondering, but since when did Michigan become a city? And I'm referring to the context used by the author here, not some random city in California that happens to thave the name Michigan.

What a waste for this poor kid. Has no one told him that UM could not care less about basketball? To the average UM fan, basketball is akin to bocce ball. "We just don't care about basketball. We're a football school" At least that's what I've heard over and over and over again for the past 10 years. Funny, one good recruit, and suddenly the bandwagon fills up. What a bunch of frontrunners.

By the way, if he comes to his senses, send him 60 miles down the road to the school that does care about hoops. We'll find a place fro him, and won't even be embarrassed by him.

It's funny listening to all the Spartinas crying on the board!!!!!!!!

WHAAAAAAAH!!! Cry some more why don't you????

You got swept by Michigan this year, and you will get swept again this year and now it looks like for years to come!!

Lets be clear, Michigan is the best academic and all around athletic university in the nation. If he picks Duke, he's just another Dukie, his name and legacy would just be lost with all the others. By going to Michigan he will be part of the Michigan family forever.
