Mike Shanahan without John Elway

Posted on: August 10, 2011 10:06 am

It is said that Mike Shanahan couldn't win without John Elway.  People who say that are idiots.

Mike Shanahan made Brian Griese, Jake Plummer, and Jay Cutler look like good quarterbacks

The Broncos went 11-5 and sent Brian Griese to the Probowl in 2000
The Broncos went 13-3 and sent Jake Plummer to the Probowl in 2005
The Broncos went 8-8 and sent Jay Cutler to the Probowl in 2008

Shanahan was also:
4-0 with Bubby Brister
2-1 with Chris Miller
4-3 with Gus Frerotte
2-3 with Steve Beuerlein
0-2 with Danny Kanell
0-1 with Jarious Jackson

That is a record of 12-10 with BACKUP QUARTERBACKS

So please, never ever EVER say that Mike Shanahan sucked after John Elway again.  Or I will have to e-punch you in your e-face.

No, he didn't make a pro bowl. You were right. I thought he had made it in 2004 after he had over 1,000 yards recieving. I personally thought he was a pretty good when he was playing in Denver but he would never win a job over Rod Smith. And at least he did better than Darius Watts.

Never, ever put Ashley Lelie on a list of anything having to do with good football players. I would bet money he never made the pro bowl not that that's a great thing with all the guys that drop out now. But he was a stone bust and not as tough as his name....Ashley, give me a break.

But on the other hand Shanahan does decent with drafting offensive players. Also my opinion of most notable:
Ryan Clady-starting LT for DEN
Eddie Royal-starting WR for DEN
Kory Lichtensteiger-starting OL for WAS
Peyton Hillis-starting RB for CLE

Ryan Harris-starter while at DEN, starter in PHI barring injury

Jay Cutler-starting QB in CHI
Tony Scheffler-starting TE in DET
Brandon Marshall-pro bowler, starting WR in MIA
Domenik Hixon-2nd string WR in NYG, 1 SB ring
Chris Kuper-starting RG in DEN

Tatum Bell-former 1,000 yard rusher in DEN

George Foster-former starting RT for DEN and DET

Ashley Lelie-former starting WR for DEN, i believe he made 1 pro bowl
Clinton Portis-former starting RB for DEN and WAS, pro bowler, holds Bronco records

Ben Hamilton-former starting LG in DEN until 2008

Cooper Carlisle-former starting RG in DEN, now in OAK
Mike Anderson-former 1,000 yard rusher, offensive rookie of the year in 2000

Olandis Gary-former 1,000 yard rusher
Desmond Clark-still playing in the NFL for CHI

Marcus Nash-1 SB ring with DEN
Brian Griese-1 SB ring with DEN, pro bowler

Dan Neil-2 SB rings with DEN

Terrell Davis-2 SB rings, NFL MVP, SB MVP, 1 of 6 players to ever get 2,000 rushing yards in a season, 1990's decade team

Shanahan had little concept on how to draft defensive players. The most notable, in my opinion, are:

Elvis Dumervil-2009 NFL Sack leader
Reggie Hayward-decent DE for Denver
Trevor Pryce-Won 2 SBs with Denver, part of a great 2005 season(arguably the last great season Denver had)
Marcus Thomas-Somehow still on the team
DJ Williams-Decent player, lost DROY to former teamate Jonathan Vilma
Ian Gold-Part of the 2005 team, solid tackler
Nate Wayne-1 SB win with Denver
Al Wilson-In my opinion, 2nd or 3rd best MLB the Broncos ever had
John Mobley-Won 2 SBs with Denver
Darrent Williams-A talented player, tragically taken, that would without a doubt be one of the best CBs in the league right now
Domonique Foxworth-Good starting CB right now, why Denver traded him for what they did..I don't know
Deltha O'Neal-Holds records as a Bronco, Pro Bowler, was traded for the draft pick that would be DJ Williams
Tory James-1 SB win with Denver
Eric Brown-1 SB win with Denver.

That's 14 notable players drafted by Shanahan in the 14 years as the Broncos HC. That's not very good.

I would hate to get e-punched in the face so I will agree. Shanahan is a great coach, his problem in Denver was he wasn't a very good drafter. He couldn't win without Terrell Davis.
