Rich Rodriguez will be the next head football coach at Arizona, athletic director Greg Byrne has announced on his Twitter account.

He's expected to bring several of his assistants from Michigan and West Virginia with him to Tucson.

The 48-year-old Rodriguez, who was fired after three seasons at Michigan, had spent the past season working as a college football analyst for CBS. At Michigan, he went 15-22. Before his turbulent stint in Ann Arbor, he coached his alma mater West Virginia to a 60-26 record in seven seasons. His final three seasons, he led the Mountaineers to top 12 finishes and two BCS bowl games.

Rodriguez will take over an Arizona team that is 3-8. The school fired Mike Stoops at midseason.

Arizona to hire Rich Rodriguez as coach

Having Season tickets during the Stoops era. I have seen many  disappointments... If you follow the trail of U of A football, they went from top 10 in the Nation to 120th from October 2010 to present. The reason? Coaching. Rich Rodriguez should change all that... Should is the key.. I will have a wait and see attitude after getting "Stoopified." BTW. I AM keeping my Season tickets...

I agree with you go blueman4, I think Rich Rod did a great job recruiting as attested by the team composition now. Did Hoke or Mattison change the defense? Yep they did, but remember coaching can only take you so far without the talent. Everyone gives Mattison credit for the Ravens defense, oh come on, Ray lewis and the rest of the crew were there long before he got there. They were a good defensive team before he got there and so were the Maize & Blue ...... they just needed time to develop. I am not taking anything away from the present coaching staff but come on, quit knocking Rich Rod. I hope Mich get to play Arizona in the future ...... it will be interesting.

Arizona to hire Rich Rodriguez as coach

As a Michigan fan I think Rich Rod will be a better fit in Arizona.    Rich Rod recruited kids who were not being recruited by MAC schools to play for Michigan..thinking he could groom them as he did at West Virginia.

At Arizona he will not be under the pressure he was at Michigan

I think that this is a win-win for both teams. Rodriguez was fired prematurely from Michigan because Hoke has the team already playing well which tells me that if Michigan had kept Rodriguez for another season they probably would have righted the ship.

I think that Arizona has enough patience to stay the course with Rodriguez which his record shows is an unsuccessful coach during his first few years and then he dominates.

question for those who say "Spread can't work in Big 10".

Who says it can't?  I've seen Purdue win the conference with a spread.  I've seen Northwestern put all kinds of pressure on far more talented teams with their spread.  OSU's spread with Troy Smith was prolific, as was Michigan's spread under Rich Rod.  The problem in Ann Arbor was a complete and total lack of defense.

Yeah, because Arizona is every coach's dream job.
Would be if I were making millions and didn't have to deal with the cold, snow, Central New York winters.

Now this is a good hire.

Rich-Rod and his spread offense will flourish in the Arizona desert.

As a Michigan fan I never liked the Rich-Rod hire on many different levels, one of which was the belief his smaller, faster players would not hold up to the riggers of the Big Ten schedule. That fear held true and the results could be seen on the field. Rich-Rod skilled players would start out strong, whether it be at the beginning of the season or the first half of a game, then begin to tire as time wore on.

The Pac-12 (or what ever they are calling themselves now) is perfectly suited for the type of player Rich-Rod enjoys recruiting. One has to look no farther than former Pac-12 standouts Reggie Bush and Jahvid Best. Both were superstars in the Pac-12, but it is questionable whether they would have had the same success in the Big Ten.

Arizona fans should embrace Rich-Rod with open arms and prepare themselves for an exciting brand of football.

Again, this is a great hire for Arizona.

You think Casteel would leave WVU?  He seems to like where he is.  But I must say, from Zona's standpoint, better Casteel than G-Rob.

Rich Rod came to Michigan as an outsider....the first outsider in a long time. Some people seemed out to get him from Day #1....but the bottom line is - he knew zilch about defensive football. Take a look at what Hoke has done with the Wolverines defense this season...incredible. Get Rich Rod someone who has a lot of experience as a defensive coordinator, and he will do fine.
