Rich Rodriguez will be the next head football coach at Arizona, athletic director Greg Byrne has announced on his Twitter account.

He's expected to bring several of his assistants from Michigan and West Virginia with him to Tucson.

The 48-year-old Rodriguez, who was fired after three seasons at Michigan, had spent the past season working as a college football analyst for CBS. At Michigan, he went 15-22. Before his turbulent stint in Ann Arbor, he coached his alma mater West Virginia to a 60-26 record in seven seasons. His final three seasons, he led the Mountaineers to top 12 finishes and two BCS bowl games.

Rodriguez will take over an Arizona team that is 3-8. The school fired Mike Stoops at midseason.

last I checked, Michigan had 5 Frosh starting on defense alone.....just sayin.  I loved the RR offense, hated the weak, undisiplined defense.

That offense wasn't built for ANY offense. They had one single returning starter on the offense and that was Boren. Obviously, as good as he was, was too fat and lazy to be told to run to the line of scrimmage. Defensivley, they lost 4 of their top 7 tacklers before RR arrived and 3 of the top 6 tacklers after RR's first year. At one point, RR had 8 true or redshirt Frosh starting on defense. Its easy to compare UM with RR to this year but you have to think about who is on the team. RR had Threat and Sheridan his first year and then two true Frosh the following year. His two starting RBs his first year were injured almost the entire season so he had to rotate in 3 true Frosh. Both Martin and RVB were injured throughout most of the season the past 2 years. And Molk, the anchor for the offense, was out for over half the season and there was no other center to take his place. Hoke has it made this year. How many true Frosh does he have starting? The players he has starting now would be starters if RR was still there. Those same players are now a year older and have a year of experience under their belt

This is a great hire for Arizona. Too many people look at what happened at Michigan and say RR can't coach. The situation in AA is completely different at Arizona. RR was not a "Michigan Man" and that was all that mattered. He wasn't given a fair shake from day one. RR's only problem at Michigan was finding a decent DC. Shafer is really not that good and GRob was even worse. I could only imagin how good this year's UM team would have been with RR running the offense and Mattison running the defense. The only thing I can say to Arizona fans is to give him a chance. Within 3 years (I said 4 at UM b/c of the situation) Arizona will be near the top in the Pac

Arizona should have ponied up about 6 or 7 million a year and brought in Urban Meyer if they wanted to win anytime soon. Guess they don't care about that. What did RichRod cost them? 2 million maybe. #laughingstocksforyears

Some people learn from other people's (Michigan) mistakes, while others (Arizona) have to learn the mistakes on their own.  Don't plan on going to the Rose Bowl anytime soon - it'll take RichRod five years just to figure out what USC is doing, let alone Oregon.  By then, the Wildcats will be in the market for a new coach; maybe Dennis Erickson?

The talent was there for a NON-SPREAD offense.  Mallet could never run that offense (That's why he transferred to AK).  I believe Manningham left when Lloyd Carr was there (he's been with the Giants for 4 years).  The offensive line was NOT built for the spread.  You need SPEED to run the spread and they didn't have it.

It didn't work out in Ann Arbor for him because he hired a moron for a DC!!  The offense is pretty much the same as last year, but with a few more snaps under center.  The defense is the biggest difference this year's team versus the last three.  The Wolverines will be national champs is two sesaons.  They are only getting better recruits and the players they have now will get better.  They're secondary is young and they are getting there backup QB (Gardner) some reps when they can.  Arizona will be in trouble with the NCAA in two years with this guy as there coach.  Michigan had some violations under him and that's why Michigan canned him.

And yes, the spread offense is coming to Michigan, Rodriguez said.

He told the media he only knows one system, and he plans on running it.

However, he said he can adapt it to the players he's inheriting. - Rich Rodriguez, December 2007

In the three seasons he was there, there was 0 evidence to support his statement.

However the entire quote is:

And yes, the spread offense is coming to Michigan, Rodriguez said.

He told the media he only knows one system, and he plans on running it.

However, he said he can adapt it to the players he's inheriting.

"I know there's great expectations here. That does not, and will not, faze our staff at all," he said.

I take that to mean he is going to do it his way, regardless.

You don't bite the hand that feeds you.

You don't tell the fans (one of the largest in all CFB)  to "Get a Life"  when referring to the OSU game.   Think that would have went over in Morgantown?   Think it will go over in Tucson?

;
When you start out alienating those you need the support of...

"Do you have to be a Michigan man to be a Michigan football coach? Gosh, I hope not. They hired me. I think you have to have great respect for the tradition."  Rich Rodriguez December 2007

Which also means you should have a clue about what that is.
