Rich Rodriguez will be the next head football coach at Arizona, athletic director Greg Byrne has announced on his Twitter account.

He's expected to bring several of his assistants from Michigan and West Virginia with him to Tucson.

The 48-year-old Rodriguez, who was fired after three seasons at Michigan, had spent the past season working as a college football analyst for CBS. At Michigan, he went 15-22. Before his turbulent stint in Ann Arbor, he coached his alma mater West Virginia to a 60-26 record in seven seasons. His final three seasons, he led the Mountaineers to top 12 finishes and two BCS bowl games.

Rodriguez will take over an Arizona team that is 3-8. The school fired Mike Stoops at midseason.

Rich Rod will have decent amounts of success in the PAC 12, probably not against good defenses like USC once they get unpunished. He needs to NOT ignore defense and play to the talents of his players his first year. WHY everyone says that when he got there the cupboard was bare talent wise is beyond me. When he got there he had Mallet Manningham Arrington Stonum Odoms Hemmingway Roundtree Matthews he had a decent offensive line already... had an OK running back situation... and on defense a decent secondary Woolfolk, Trent, Warren... Harrison and Brown at Saftey a great punter and OK linebackers... the D line wasn't horrid either. IT was the scheme he wanted to run and take everyone out of their element.

A few of those players left as well as the one not to be mentioned that left to go play for tOSU instead of staying at UM because of him.

Your response is an indication of the expectations.
When you hire someone that you know is going to "completely overhaul" your offense....don't expect immediate results.   Michigan hired him knowing the offense would undergo major changes.  It is obvious Michigan is not a good fit for him.

bringing in Robinson was the dumbest thing he ever did.

Not true.   Waiting until his last season to put some emphasis on recruiting Defensive players, forcing Robinson to run the 3-3-5 without the right players, and basically forcing Robinson to run the 3-3-5 period, when he was a career 4-3 d coordinator all are equally dumb.

I don't think folks realize what he was actually left with talent wise.

Actually, on the defensive side, he had a very good/decent/experienced team in 2008.   2008 gave us (at the time) the worst defense in Michigan's history.

Games against Oregon will be 100 plays by EACH team EACH half.  As a Michigan fan, I think RR was treated like crap and we should be ashamed of that.  However, RR had his issues.  In the B1G you CANNOT ignore defense.  He brought in talent on that side of the ball.  This year proves that.  But he didn't care to develop it.  That was his downfall.  I don't think folks realize what he was actually left with talent wise.  It wasn't much and in the three years he was there, he got the cupboards back to 65-70% full (talent wise).  He fell short as a coach of that talent though and bringing in Robinson was the dumbest thing he ever did.  I am certain he won't make that mistake again.  He'd be best served to hire a good DC and let them do their job.

I think this Arizona definitley got a decent coach.  I think saying that he's going to change them into a serious contender is a little bit of a stretch.  He will certainly get more time to implement any system he wants.  While I agree that 3 years is not enouhg time to get his system fully implemented in Michigan, he was given enought time to make some improvements and did not.  Everyone that says he is a offensive genius needs to first look at how many points he scored against good teams while he was at Michigan.  Indiana and Illinois do not count.  The worst thing he ever did was hire that joker Greg Robinson as his defensive coordinator.  If he brings that guy down to Arizona they will give up 30 a game like Michigan did.

For those of you giving credit to Rich Rod for how Michigan has improved this year, you are pretty much dead wrong.  The offense has been stagnant at times this year but does enough to win because Hoke (Al Borges) is trying to run a hybrid system.  The defense also has the same talent as last year but no one is giving credit for that.  That is the reason Michigan will probably make a BCS bowl with a win this weekend.

Arizona will be better for hiring Rich Rod but he was given plenty of time in Michigan.  He lost games he should not have lost and did not beat any of the rivals.  That's enough to get anyone fired at a big time program like Michigan.

Listen  good luck with this guy he will get you a good offense but he totally ignores defense. RR solution to defense we dont need it we will just out score them.

I watched every game he coached at Michigan  and it was just terrible  his defense  was ranked pretty much last in the country.

Hoke takes over with new D-cooridnator and we are so much better with lot of same players.

RR good offense mind but not a good football coach.
