Rich Rodriguez will be the next head football coach at Arizona, athletic director Greg Byrne has announced on his Twitter account.

He's expected to bring several of his assistants from Michigan and West Virginia with him to Tucson.

The 48-year-old Rodriguez, who was fired after three seasons at Michigan, had spent the past season working as a college football analyst for CBS. At Michigan, he went 15-22. Before his turbulent stint in Ann Arbor, he coached his alma mater West Virginia to a 60-26 record in seven seasons. His final three seasons, he led the Mountaineers to top 12 finishes and two BCS bowl games.

Rodriguez will take over an Arizona team that is 3-8. The school fired Mike Stoops at midseason.

I like the hire as long as he hires a experienced defensive cord and just focuses on offense. As far as offense goes he can put up points with anybody.

No he can't.    if you actually watched any of the games Michigan played against teams with decent to good Defenses, Michigan struggled.  A lot of their points (if thy scored that is) came in the second half after the game was out of reach.  When you score 21 points in the second half because the D went into prevent... and you still lose by 10-14 points.

Their defense cost them dearly, having given up 31 or more poionts in 8 games. I love the way people immeditely start talking about Michigan and the Big 10. The Big `10 is a terrible conference, and could not stand up to the Pac 12. It will be much tougher for Rich Rod at Arizona than it was for him at Michgian, because Airzona plays a mucch bettter caliber of team in the Pac 12 than Rich Rod played in the Big 10.

lol.  How has the PAC 12 faired head to head vs the Big Ten the previous three seasons?    Did you see how USC struggled this year against Minnesota?   Same USC that took Stanford to the wire and Oregon out behind the woodshed.

LOL  Yeah, Pac 12 is so much better.

Condelenses to Arizona. RR is a fool. Reminds me of Sam 'Wicky Wacky' Wyche. They think they are smarter than everyone and in the end they just end up losers. You just can't play one side of the ball. You can't turn over the football. Like a bad gambler who tells you about how he won 10 grand, but doesn't tell you how it cost him 15 grand.

This is an excellent hire.  Arizona had to get a "Name" head coach who can recruit.  When you realize how bad Zirzona has been over the years (3 bowl appearances, 1 bowl win in 11 years), you know how bad recruiting has been at Arizona.  Arizona will be recruiting against the likes of USC, Oregon, and Stanford, not to mention their in state rival Arizona State, so getting a "Name" Head Coach is important.  What Rich Rod has to understand is that the Arizona offense was not that bad this season. The good news for Rich Rod is that Arizona plays 8 games at home next season.  The bad news is that their 4 away games are against Oregon, Stanford, Utah, and UCLA, and 3 of their home games are against Oklahoma State, USC, and Washington.

Thanks to Lloyd Carr gutting the Michigan roster on the way out the door, RR had to play with a majority of underclassmen for all three of his years at Michigan.

At year three, the majority of players on the field should not be underclassman/walk-ons.

Brady Hoke is doing a great job so far, but RR would have just as good a record if he had come back and hired a decent DC.  Even though he had to rebuild from scratch and didn't even have a bona fide major college QB his first year, RR's teams improved by two wins every year. That would have translated to at least nine wins this year, and possibly more due to a lot of B1G teams being weaker than prpjected this year.

No he wouldn't.   RR would still force whichever new DC he hired to run his pathetic 3-3-5 with players not suited to run it.    Not only that, but after three seasons, the players under his watch displayed such poor fundementals and understanding of the scheme...

Not only that, but Hoke and company have shown us something RR was unable or unwilling to do in his three seasons,  make in-game adjustments.   The reason Michigan is at 9-2 is because of this key component to Hoke's team.   We all know he is using RR's undersized players and as such not able to fully run the offense as he's like.   However he is adapting and adjusting (both sides of ball) week to week and in game.

As for the wins, just look at the teams RR had wins over his three seasons.   Only one win over a decent team (Wiscy 2008).   That's it.  Given his inabilty to change and coach, why would you think he would get to 9 wins this season?

If RR actually gets the support he should have gotten at Michigan, he will do well at AZ.

Support?  lol.    Support had nothing to do with his inability to coach.  Nothing to do with his inability to make adjustments.   Nothing to do with his inability to develop players.    Nothing to do with winning games on Saturday's.

He will beat a few B1G teams along the way, but there will still be a few idiots who insist that the spread "won't work in the Big Ten." I wonder what those idiots will think in a few years if Urban Meyer ends up at PSU or OSU?

Which Big Ten team runs a spread and has been successful for an extended period of time?  Oh right, none.    You must not watch games and form your opinion based of the box score.    RR's undersized Michigan teams were manhandled all over the field for three seasons.  Talk about Urban and his spread.  One big difference, He recruited players to play his spread in the SEC.   Bigger, faster and able to compete with the bigger, faster players in the SEC.

Michigan ought to be ashamed of the way they treated this guy. Granted, it was a bad match from the very beginning but apparently integrity doesn't count for crap anymore...

The irony coming from a Tressel and OSU fan.   lol

Always the hate. Michigan was in a terrible mess and is also a different league. Don't forget that Hoke is playing with Rodriguez players. And hate to break to the Michigan fans, but you are no longer a power house as you were in the past. You willnot compete with the SEC again. That looked pretty plain after last year.

Actually, Hoke and company have made the kids RR recruited into players.   RR's success has been QB run right, QB run left, bubble screen.    That's about it.

As for your Michigan competing with the SEC, I figure since Michigan has a very comfortable lead vs SEC, it's the SEC that is finally able to compete with Michigan.

Then again, Michigan has been pretty horrific the previous three seasons, so counting a win against them really doesn't mean much.

Notice to NCAA: You need to have a permament investigator in Tucson.

Notice to Tucson: You need to make sure your women fold are in before dark.

I don't like rodriguez....but I would argue that it may be a good location for him.....he should be able to acquire some speed from California and the local area.....if he gets someone to run the defense...he could be successful......but I am rooting against him.
