Rich Rodriguez will be the next head football coach at Arizona, athletic director Greg Byrne has announced on his Twitter account.

He's expected to bring several of his assistants from Michigan and West Virginia with him to Tucson.

The 48-year-old Rodriguez, who was fired after three seasons at Michigan, had spent the past season working as a college football analyst for CBS. At Michigan, he went 15-22. Before his turbulent stint in Ann Arbor, he coached his alma mater West Virginia to a 60-26 record in seven seasons. His final three seasons, he led the Mountaineers to top 12 finishes and two BCS bowl games.

Rodriguez will take over an Arizona team that is 3-8. The school fired Mike Stoops at midseason.

RR was a clown and idiot at UM.  He openly showed disdain for the need of a team to have any kind of defense.  Arizona, I hope you enjoy losing 56-35 each week.  As RichRod would say, "It AIN'T gonna be purty."

As Head Coach of my Wolverines, he ran the defense into the ground by forcing an ill-advised system on a longtime defensive coach that had never run the defensive system before, and also by failing to focus on DL and LB in recruiting, and also failing to develop and/or hold on to many of his top recruits; he had special teams that were so bad that he sent FG kicking back to the depths of the 1960's; and he was very definitely a "my way or highway" type coach whose one ability is to recruit for and run HIS offense and nothing else.  He is nothing more than a glorified offensive coordinator.  As it pertains to things that do not involve HIS offense, he is a failure as a head coach.  Though, given where Arizona football is at and has been, I certainly don't blame them for giving this a shot.

This is a good hire all the way around.  RR will have more time to get his feet under him here than he did at U-M.  Plus, he won't be continually undermined by the old jowsly Michigan-guard clowns who don't like him using the word 'aint'.  Arizona just made themselves relevant for the first time in 15 years - as long as they have patience that Michigan did not.

Rodriguez was never given a fair chance at Michigan.  With that said I truly believe in the end he was his own worst enemy.  Had he simply cut ties with the worst coach and defensive coordinator in history he would have survived longer to see the fruits of his labor.  I however, would never trade him for HOKE and MATTISON!  These guys have taken RR recruits and taught them toughness, team work and Tackeling!  I do hope RR does well in Arizona.  Hopefully without any former syracuse coaches on his staff.

Pyshie: you are kidding aren't you? RR could have been more successful at Michigan if he had understood that there is more to football than offense. Hiring a former head coach (and a middling one at that) to run a 3-3-5 defense was a recipe for disaster and guess what? It was a disaster. Michigan did not expect to win immediately. They just didn't expect a three win season and losing to TOLEDO. Yes...Toledo. RR tried to adapt the players to his system...not adapting his system to the players, which is what a good coach would do. I don't know if he'll be successful at Arizona or not and I don't dislike the man. However, he has a tall task trying to compete with Oregons and USCs of the Pac 12.

Trust me when I say this pyshie, you're dead wrong about RR. You can say whatever you like about Michigan, I really don't care. I was where you are about 4 years ago when the RR hire was first announced at UM. I said, give him 3 years and he'll have the BIG10 turned on their collective heads. We all know how that worked out. USC, Stanford, Oregon and even CAL on a good year are going to destroy a RR lead (using that term very loosely) team just like MSU, OSU, Wisconsin (you get the picture) did. Trust me when I say this.....Arizona has hard times coming but you don't have to believe me, I just lived them.

Arizona is currently ranked 111th in Total Defense, it won't take much work for Rich Rod to get them to 120th (dead last in FBS), really this won't be much of a challenge for him at all.  Their offense is ranked 22nd in scoring so he can't do much there.  Seems like Arizona isn't likely to get much out of this hire.

Dear Big Mike_AZ fan,

Give RR 3 or 4 years to put the right personnel in place (especially OL) and youwillhave an exciting offense.  If he gets the right defensive coordinator, look out.  But, the emphasis will be on offense (which it almost always is in college) and most teams run something similar to what RR introduced at WVU.  I don't like the man, but I love the coach.  You woun't like either at the beginning.  But, give it 3 or 4 years and you will compete at the top.  Michigan is too snooty and thinks it should win immediately and missed it by one year.  Had they hung on, I believe they would be undefeated right now.  AZ is the perfect place for RR and RR is perfect for AZ at this stage.  The expectations at Michigan are too Bo Schembecklerish and too immediate for what RR has to do for his offense to work.  With the sason AZ is having, this situation is perfect.  Just show a little patience.

Dear albeemacaw,

1.  It's WVU .... not UWV.

2.  It takes hims 3 to 4 years to gather the proper personnel for his offense, especially lineman.

3.  When you talk about the little girls league (the Big East), you forget to talk about the cheating, scandalous Big 10 (i.e. Ohio St., Penn St.).

Need I say more?
