Indians call, but best hope for AJ is Pittsburgh

The Yankees and Pirates continue to talk about a deal involving A.J. Burnett, and there seems to be continuing optimism a deal could get done between those teams by the end of the week. The best guess is that the Pirates will wind up paying about $13 million of the $33 million owed Burnett while surrendering one or two non-roster minor-league players. The Pirates seem more willing to bend on the money than the quality of the minor leaguers, and that is a testament to them.

The Indians, Angels and a fourth team are also believed to have checked in on Burnett, but the focus remains on a potential Pirates deal. There was some brief discussion of a Burnett-for-Travis Hafner swap, but there's no evidence the Indians would be willing to do that, as they are reluctant to hurt their offense. The Angels are on Burnett's no-trade list, and he has said he would not waive his no-trade to go there. The Burnetts live in Baltimore and want to stay in the East, which is why he put the West Coast teams on his no-trade list in the first place.

The Pirates at some point offered to to pay at least $10 million of the $33 million remaining on Burnett, and once they compromise a bit more on the cash, the sense is there's every reason to believe a deal could happen within the next several days.

I think Pitt would be a bette place for him to disappear...Should be easy because the Pirates havent been seen since 1990

Ouch! It's actually 1992...like it makes a difference for all of us Buccos fans! One of my favorite sayings is "I bleed Black and Gold, but during baseball season, I just about bleed to death." I still love my Pirates as there is a great history there, even though it's anciant history at this point. As I said before, I would love for them to pick up AJ. He definitely makes the staff better. I look around the league at some of the insane salaries being paid out by the bosox, yankkes and angels. Pittsburgh, and the rest of the small market teams, just don't have that kind of money.

Burnett to Pittsburgh makes sense for the fact that he would be shipped to the NL where he thrived early in his career. Yanks would be able to shed 13 mil. and probably get lower tier prospects in the likes of Aaron Poreda and Bryan Morris in return.

And yes, he is losing speed on his fastball.  But as we all know, you're fastball is only as good as your breaking and off-speed stuff.  And Burnett's breaking and off-speed stuff are nasty.  He just can't place them.  And I think it has a lot to do with the pressure of pitching in New York.  The Yanks would do well to keep him out of the AL East, and maybe even out of the AL, period, lest he come back and embarras them like he used to before he became a Yankee.
