Indians call, but best hope for AJ is Pittsburgh

The Yankees and Pirates continue to talk about a deal involving A.J. Burnett, and there seems to be continuing optimism a deal could get done between those teams by the end of the week. The best guess is that the Pirates will wind up paying about $13 million of the $33 million owed Burnett while surrendering one or two non-roster minor-league players. The Pirates seem more willing to bend on the money than the quality of the minor leaguers, and that is a testament to them.

The Indians, Angels and a fourth team are also believed to have checked in on Burnett, but the focus remains on a potential Pirates deal. There was some brief discussion of a Burnett-for-Travis Hafner swap, but there's no evidence the Indians would be willing to do that, as they are reluctant to hurt their offense. The Angels are on Burnett's no-trade list, and he has said he would not waive his no-trade to go there. The Burnetts live in Baltimore and want to stay in the East, which is why he put the West Coast teams on his no-trade list in the first place.

The Pirates at some point offered to to pay at least $10 million of the $33 million remaining on Burnett, and once they compromise a bit more on the cash, the sense is there's every reason to believe a deal could happen within the next several days.

Burnett's problem isn't his pitching, it's his head.

I am very uncertain about spending that much money on Burnett as his stuff is fading.  I recall the Pirates making a seemingly great deal a few years ago and then eating about $10 million on Matt Morris.  The Pirates are one franchise that just can't afford to waste money like that.

As a Yankee fan I say good riddance to AJ. I do believe he'll pitch well for the Pirates as other busts have done after leaving the Yanks (see Pavano and Javier Vasquez to name a few). It's a good deal for both teams as AJ will never be a winner and pitch well in the spotlight and bright lights of New York. He could win 16 games in the NL with Pittsburgh this year if he gets enough run support. He's got the stuff. It's all mental with AJ. He'll be more relaxed with the Pirates.

Think this a great move for the Pirates!! How many times have we seen above average pitchers have great years then go to the Yankees and totally lose it in the spotlight of 24/7 coverage and expectations?? With the money they are offering and staying strong to not giving up top prospects its a no lose situation!! If he has a great year and the Pirates contend(no laughing please) its a win,, if the Pirates struggle and he pitches great they can turn around and flip him for top value!! If he sux you didnt lose any talent!!

Roy Oswalt already turned down the Pirates according to article I read. I want nothing to do with Burnett. I would have rather had Maholm.

Pirates fans seem to have mixed feelings about getting Burnett.  Personally, I love the move.  As long as the team doesn't give in and offer anything resembling a decent prospect, there is absolutely nothing to dislike about this move.  If he's a bust, then the team is out $10-$13 million that otherwise will likely go unspent at this point.  If he's a success, then perhaps he likes the organization enough to re-sign a deal as the rest of the Pirates prospects likely hit their stride in a couple of years.
I also think it's a good move as long as Garrett Jones is not part of the deal
