Francona all wet with rip of Bobby V.'s beer ban

Terry Francona derided his Red Sox managerial replacement Bobby Valentine's decision to ban beer in Boston's clubhouse as a "PR move'' while talking on one of his new employer's new shows. That banning beer became obvious and necessary due to Francona running a Romper Room the previous year was never mentioned.

Francona can have an opinion here if he wants, but it needs to be said in context. And here's the proper context: Francona's lax policing of a clubhouse gone wild necessitated this move by Valentine, which he likely would have done anyway.

Valentine banned alcohol in the Mets clubhouse and, as he pointed out, nearly 20 clubs have banned alcohol. Why the other 10 haven't remains a mystery.

Nothing good can come from drinking in a clubhouse, and the Red Sox's in-game beer drinking by three of its key pitchers last year covered that team in shame. Two, Jon Lester and Josh Beckett, owned up to their mistake. How about Francona owning up to the fact he took a paycheck to do practically nothing last year?

Francona was there, but he wasn't there. He needed to speak to several of his players last year, and he blew it off. Instead, he called a team meeting, when at least 20 of the guys in the meeting probably wondered why Francona wasn't calling in Lester, Beckett and John Lackey individually. He mishandled the situation, and he managed to lose a job he appeared to own.

Now he's spouting off for cash. As Valentine -- who in a twist was Francona's TV predecessor -- said in a retort to the Red Sox writers: "Remember, you're getting paid over there for saying stuff. You get paid over here for doing stuff. I've done both.''

Francona will continue to get paid for saying stuff. But it is a more valid opinion when he targets someone other than the one guy in baseball who took his job.

So, how does this ban work?  No Champagne after winning a World Series, just the regular season? There is a question of balance even for teams with bans.  Valentine had to make a statement so he did, no big deal.  Sour grapes from Francona. As a Rays fan, turmoil in Boston is good.  This should be a great season for the AL east and living near Clearwater, I look forward to being a Phillies fan, for the month of April only.

Francona, who now is paid to create controversy, said the beer drinking ban was a PR move.  Duh.  Francona's role has completely changed from someone who is paid to downplay controversy to one who is paid to highlight it.  If the role's were reversed, Bobby V would be saying the exact same thing about Tito.  Each one is just doing their job.
PR moves are done everyday in sports.  It's why athletes apologize.  This week, how many people or groups have apologized for things they said? (Lin-Sanity fortune cookie ice cream, Jeremy Lin's chink in the armor, Danica Patrick is a *****, etc.)  It comes down to what makes the most money or what loses the most money.  Do you really think A-Rod was sorry that he took Steroids during his years in Texas when he was crushing the ball, leading to another record setting contract?  PR.  Michael Phelps apologizing for smoking pot? PR.  Kobe Bryant apologizing for adultery? PR.
PR makes it so that no one apologizes for anything unless they have something to gain, or something to lose.

I was disappointed with Francona's comments on the ban imposed by Valentine. You would think that with all the negative publicity that surrounded the discovery of the drinking in the clubhouse that Francona would have applauded the move. Drinking belongs in the clubhouse as much as it belongs in the office, factory or shop. That is, not at all. That's what bars are for. And it is beyond understanding how someone close to the situation cannot see the negative influences of a policy that allows drinking in the workplace. I have always appreciated Francona because he brought us two championships but when you're wrong you're wrong and sorry to say but Terry's got it backwards this time.

lol, this is what Boston is concerned about?? The Red Sox are going to be lucky to make third place in 2012, this new manager is going to piss off most of the players with his rules from Japan.  A new GM, who couldn't even get a fair price for Theo, isn't going to help either.  TOR and the Rays are very happy with the current Red Sox team.  It will be fun listening the to boased media explaining all season long why Boston is failing (again).  Well, two World Series wins is still better than most teams.
