Our Sports Society

This is not going to hit home with most of you but I have to say it. It’s eating at me too much. The sports culture and our society as a whole are disgusting. Recently CBS Sports Eye On Baseball Blogger C. Trent Rosecrans posted this blog:

Maybe I am crazy but as hot as you may think Kate Upton is, she is NINETEEN years old!!! C.J Wilson one of the gawking ballplayers in the ad is 31 years old. Just Verlander is 28. I understand that this is just a commercial and Kate Upton has basically posed nude in Sports Illustrated (don’t get me started on that) anyway, but it seems wrong. Before seeing this ad I did not know who she was and had not seen her modeling. The first thing I noticed was how young she looked. I am 27 years old myself and will turn 28 a month after she turns 20, but when I looked at her (and not at her breast like everybody else in the world) I saw a young woman way too young to be gawked at. Like I said at the beginning, this is most likely not hitting home for most of you but that is because this is intended for you, and for the rest of our society for that matter. I’m not an activist or some ultra conservative, but for me this is morally wrong. I am only 8 years her senior and knowing that there are many marriages in this country alone where the age difference is much more then 8 years but I do not feel comfortable looking at her in such a blatantly sexual manner. When I looked her up and went to her Wikipedia page and learned that she was a model and aspiring actress I decided to Google image her to see what the fuss was about. I was truly appalled. I don't dislike women in such a way that sexual images appall me, but more over that many of these images were taken when she was only 16, 17, and 18 years of age. I just don't understand what is going on here. I do get it the sexuality part. I was 12-25 once as well. It’s just shouldn't we have more common sense than this. Our country is appalled by sexoffenders (rightfully so), as seen in the popularity of shows like To Catch a Predator. So why is it ok for 16 year old girls to be selling scantily clad bikinis?

But back to my point. As much as I hate our society for this it’s the sports world that is the worst. Just go to your local Buffalo Wild Wings or Hooters and tell me I’m wrong. And please don't argue to me that these women choose this life and it’s their body their right BS. As adults we have the responsibility to see the right example for the next generation. Everything from watching the way too sexual sports ads (see above) during televised sporting events to the high school cheerleader who 'HAS' to put out to get/stay with popular sport playing boy our culture is wrecking the role of women in our society. If you really want to argue that these women have a choice in what they are doing then fine.
Just skip the fact that the whole point I am making is that as a society we are cultivating this. They have the choice because of our current state of society. This sadly won't change. Sports are currently the most popular event in society. Look at TV ratings, attendance, and merchandising. And the sports culture likes is crappy ways and won't change. It will never be about what is right, no matter how much I wish it was.
