Worst combined NCAA football/basketball schools

It's pretty clear which schools are among the best combined football/basketball programs, but what about the worst?

Flourishing Five series rundown
No. 5 Pittsburgh: Football | Basketball
No. 4 Wisconsin: Football | Basketball
No. 3 Ohio State: Football | Basketball
No. 2 Texas: Football | Basketball
No. 1 Florida: Football | Basketball
Among the BCS schools, there aren't many that are absolutely atrocious in both sports. Bad in one and average to good in the other or simply mediocre, but not awful.

Washington State is part of the former. They're very bad in football, going 18-42 over the past five seasons and 3-22 the last two years. But in basketball they're nothing better than average after reaching the tournament in 2007 and 2008. Prior to those breakout seasons, the Cougars had 10 straight losing seasons. They've been 17-16 and 16-15 the past two seasons.

Indiana is another team you can throw into the mix for BCS worst. The Hoosiers are 23-37 in football over last five years, but we'd be remiss if we didn't point out that the team was hit by tragedy in 2007 when coach Terry Hoeppner succumbed to complications from brain cancer. Recruiting violations under former coach Kelvin Sampson has rocked the basketball program. Tom Crean has been tasked with trying to dig out from the rubble, but it's not an easy process. The Hoosiers were 6-25 in 2008-09 and 10-21 last season.

Inconsistency has dogged the Michigan program. Lloyd Carr's final season as coach in 2007 was marred by a stunning loss to D-I FCS team Appalachian State. Rich Rodriguez took over and he's 8-16 in two season (3-9 in 2008, 5-7 last season). Though the Wolverines basketball team did reach the NCAA tournament in 2009, they were 10-22 during the 2007-08 season and 15-17 last year.

We could be here all day picking on non-BCS schools. Among the worst we came across ...

Eastern Michigan: 12-47 in football over the past five years, 0-12 last year and 1-11 in 2006. The basketball team was actually pretty decent last year going 17-15. It was the first time they finished above .500 in 10 years.

FIU: The Golden Panthers are 14-45 in football over the past five years. They went 0-12 in 2006 and 1-11 in 2007. They haven't had a winning season in basketball since 1999-2000 and have averaged only 10 wins a season the past five seasons.

Tulane: The Green Wave are 15-44 in football over five years, 3-9 and 2-10 the past two seasons. The basketball team has also take a nosedive, falling to 8-22 last season.

Hawaii: At the start of the decade, the Warriors were actually a pretty decent hoops team with eight straight winnings season. But the last three years performance has dropped with finishes of 11-19, 13-17 and 10-20.  The football team enjoyed a resurgence under head coach Junes Jones. It's tough to say where the program is headed under Greg McMackin, who is 13-14 in his two seasons since taking over for Jones, who left for SMU.

I couldn't bring myself to add Army to the list. Yes, they've been bad (very bad) in both sports, but they also operate in a different manner than most other schools. I wasn't sure it was a fair comparison.

So who are some other schools who deserve to be on the worst list?

I agree with your assessment of Tulane. They are definitely in the top 5 of worst. Another is Western Carolina University, I don't think they have one program that is over .500 except for their baseball program.

how is going to bcs bowls an overrated football program?  They havn't been good at basketball in the recent past but that could change as they have made a coaching change.  Iowa doesn't deserve to even be mentioned on the worst list

They're always one of the top big 10 football teams consistently year after year.  So what makes them the absolute worst out of any team?? Makes no sense, you're an ignoramous Wisconsin fan.  You really think you'll beat us at Kinnick this year.  Ha!

How is Northwestern not mentioned among the worst?

Never been to an NCAA tournament in basketball. NEVER. EVER. Their football program is no better than middle of the pack in the Big Ten. Yes, they have some bowl games, but their overwhelming awfulness in basketball should land them on this list.

Iowa State should also be in there. Last winning record in basketball was 2006. Last tournament trip was 2005. In football, they have been up and down - bowls here and there, but not consistent.

U ARE A DUFUS-  oh in case you live in a cave iowa recruits arent exactly mince meat...  and some good ones seem to be flocking in latey. ps they LIKE iowa city and most of all the stable coaching staff.  yeah thats a terrible thing to have
case in point of what a real dufus you are...iowa is among the leading schools with NFL players. YES the UNIVERSITY OF IOWA.
and after you get out of your cave you may notice that wrestling has won 23 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS (oh its a sport, if golf, gymnastics, volleyball, etc is considered a sport, wrestling is too) along with the football team winning 2 big ten championships and many new years appearances in kirk ferentz tenure. and they just whipped the sh!t out of the last hype up bowl opponent. not to mention THE ONLY big ten team to win two years ago.
dont be surprised if iowa wins the big one in football this year too. while the likes of florida and texas are constantly pimped as the best, iowa just sits back and wins under the medias refusal to accept them
we have one program which is at the bottom and its ignorance from posters like you that when iowa is crowned will still be in cave reading about the clippings of an overrated school that cheated. see most of ncaa football champions of the last decade

Hey dufuss, congratulations on writing the dumbest post ever to be printed on this website.  I know you're embarrassed because the Hawkeyes destroyed their bowl game opponent in the BCS bowl and you were part of the mob who predicted them to get thrashed.  So call them overrated and you feel much better about yourself.  Then try to downplay all the national championships they have in wrestling by pretending its not a sport.  Crawl back into your ignorant hole and get a clue, dumba$$.

Colorado has made the tournament twice in the last 15 in basketball.  They were ranked top 5 in the nation in football in 2001.  They won the Big XII North as recently as 2005.  They had a 15-16 record in basketball last year.  How is someone with a top 1k ranking on CBSSPORTS have his head so far up his......

Wow, you have some axe to grind with the Big 10 and Penn State.  I can't find any truth in your comments at all -- it just comes across as a juvenile backahnd against a school/conference that you don't care for.  Penn State could never be considered among the worst in football in the 90s or 00s; their confernece record puts them among the elite in a very strong conference.  The b-ball team has never really been good but to categorize the Penn St football team in the way you have is just plain reckless and wrong.

Obviously you are a Pitt Panther fan and are jealous of your in-state rival?

I love how the people that are anti-Big 10 would probably jump at the chance to see their school included in the conference that has the best blend of academis and athletic superiority.  Big 10 -- the only conference with every member part of the prestigious AAU (American Association of Universities).
