For a school known for Dean Smith, Michael Jordan and four national championships in men's basketball, football is now getting the attention in Chapel Hill.

With its 38-12 victory over previously unbeaten Connecticut, North Carolina has jumped into the CBSSports.com 120, moving up 15 spots to No. 21.

They also cracked the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2001, sliding into the No. 22 ranking. The Tar Heels won eight games that year and beat Auburn in the Peach Bowl.

Being ranked is quite an accomplishment for a team that usually finds itself at the bottom of the ACC, winning a few games a season.

But thanks to second-year coach Butch Davis, two very good offensive weapons in Hakeem Nicks and Brandon Tate, and a defense allowing 19 points a game, the Tar Heels find themselves in position to win double-digit wins for the first time since Mack Brown's team in 1997.

UNC's only loss is a three-point defeat to Virginia Tech. Since the Hokies are in their division, it will be hard for the Tar Heels to get to the ACC title game, but moving up the rankings and improving their bowl standing are definitely possible.

They don't have Wake Forest, Florida State or Clemson on the schedule and it gets Georgia Tech (Nov. 8) and Boston College (Oct. 25) at home.

"This team is headed in the right direction," said quarterback Cam Sexton. "All the pieces are in place. Last year we were just feeling each other out. But we did not come here to win four games. We're not where we want to be. The only thing we have to do as a team is to remain focused. I think this team has a lot of potential, and the leadership needs to keep us focused."

It has one more non-conference game this weekend ... vs. Notre Dame. The Irish moved up to No. 38 this week in the CBSSports.com 120 poll.

The only other ACC team ranked higher than the Tar Heels right now is Virginia Tech, checking in at No. 17. Wake Forest is ranked No. 23.

Oklahoma State (No. 18), Pittsburgh (No. 22) and Northwestern (No. 25) also joined the Tar Heels in the rankings this week.

Other notes

-- Two undefeated schools are just outside the Top 25. Tulsa (5-0) is No. 26 and Ball State (6-0) is No. 27. Strength of schedule is definitely hurting these two schools as Tulsa's is 104th, while Ball State's is 88th.

-- The strange case of Maryland. What can you say about this team? The are up and down every week. After losing to Middle Tennessee State, the Terps fell, but then jumped back up with victories over California and Clemson. Things should have been easy against the worst team in the ACC, but Maryland got shut out 31-0 to Virginia! Maryland fell back to No. 52.

-- Fresno State fell out of the Top 25 and all the way down to No. 43 after losing 32-29 to Hawaii. Every time I pick Fresno to win the WAC, I curse them. Me and every other media member that falls into the preseason hype.

-- The team with the best record ranked the lowest -- Western Michigan (5-1) at No. 58. Despite having five wins, they dont have won impressive victory. The Broncos beat Northern Illinois (No. 99), Idaho (No. 119), Tennessee Tech (FCS), Temple (No. 93) and Ohio (No. 118).

-- Only two winless teams remain -- Washington (No. 103) and North Texas (No. 120).

You seem to know your stuff, I like how you think Auburn is a cupcake!

My buddy is doing a blog with college picks for the week, if this is the "biggest weekend" as you say, let's see how well you can pick the games straight up!

I tried to get him to do spreads but he said no.

If anyone else would like to play, just click the link and post your picks!

Yeah I completely agree that Auburn is the highest ranked cupcake in the past couple of years.

LSU's season will really be told in the next couple of games.

This is the biggest Saturday of the season so far.

So do you agree that Auburn is a cupcake?

Defending national champions or not, they are not the same team as last year.  Players graduate, redshirt freshmen start playing.  And I just really hate how LSU gets ranked so high when they play nobody but complete garbage.

They could at least play East Carolina, or a team that might win once in a while.

LA good point.  I missed that argument about Auburn being a cupcake.  I do agree though, no matter how good their defense is, it is a fact that their offense is arguably one of the worst in the nation.

LSU may be overrated, I was just giving them the benefit of the doubt as defending national champions.  I think they lose think week to Florida anways.

As far as going to a higher paying Job. Butch Davis got million dollar raise after his first year so he would not take the arkansas job.  There is plenty of private money from boosters in Chapel Hill and they like the winning ways and enjoy football.  They made a few mistakes by letting Mack Brown get away due to money. And then hiring cheap with Torbush and Bunting. Maybe we have learned our lesson. You get what you pay for most times.

See above.  I consider Auburn a cupcake.

I didn't see the Bama-Georgia game, but from what I heard Georgia got flat-out dominated, so switch Bama to #5, USC at #6, and Georgia at #7.

And as for the ND fan, I don't even care to read all of that, but I do see that you repeated yourself several times.

Notre Dame fan here.

A few things about Notre Dame, but 1st let me say that I believe NC wins the game.

ND can pass pretty well, but if NC gets a good pass rush they are DONE!  Notre Dame can't run the ball to well & I don't think they will run to well against NC. If NC doesn't get a good pass rush Notre Dame will score close to 30 pts on them without any doubt. When clausen has time to throw he is a Monster. I promise you that you haven't faced a QB as good this year (not even close).

I have a funny feeling ND won't be able to stop the NC run and NC will pass somewhat on them. That means NC controls the clock & gets the ND Defense very tired as they run the ball down ND's throat. If  ND plays 8 in the box I think it might serve them better but NC has a decent passing game (excellent WR's but not a great QB). I have seen NC play 2 times this year & I thought they looked very good.

The worst thing for ND is if NC has no problems running and ND can't pass cause of a heavy pass rush. Sorry NC I know you have good CB's but no matter who is playing CB they are not covering ND's WR's unless you have a great pass rush. If they don't get that rush ND will abuse them on the pass. Let's say NC stops the run (which I think they will) and they get a great pass rush (not sure if that will happen but maybe) then NC wins this game hands down 38 to 6.  ND needs time to throw or they are DONE!  Notre Dame is a very very young team, even younger then NC.

Notre Dame is a very good passing team. They have more then a few WR's who are either tall or fast (Golden Tate ran a 4.3 but is ND doesn't want anybody to know that so they say he is slower) and Clausen has been " THE BEST QB" I have seen so far this season (Passing the ball not running). Yeah Clausen has about 6 INT's but 3 of them came when ball hit the WR's right in the hands & the ball popped up and was intercepted (Those are on the WR's). Two of the other INT's came from Jump balls in the Endzone where our WR didn't come back for the ball (one of those times the WR ran the wrong patten). Clausen has something like 7 or 8 TD's with (i believe) over 600 yards in two games. I think Clausen had about 14 TD's this year.

As far as Charlie being a good coach. Chuck is an Excellent coach. If you remember 2005-2006 ND (Weis 1st years) he smashed every record at ND with Quinn. He made Quinn into what he was at ND. Charlie got a bad name cause of last year, but what a lot of people don't know is that the 2004 & 2005 Classes were the worst Classes recruited in Notre Dame history (back to back) and boy did it show last year. We are now rid of one of those classes. However, ND's  Senior class is terrible it's the Freshmen, Soph, & Juniors that have very good talent. One of those classes was recruited by Willingham and the other Weise, but Weise couldn't recruit his 1st year cause he was still with the Patriots at the time. So his 1st year of recruiting was very bad but only cause he didn't really recruit anyone. Now ND is doing great in recruiting and is one of the best. Weise is an Exellent X's and O's coach (as good as it gets).

True facts, Out of the 18 TD's scored this year 17 have been from underclassmen, plus a underclassmen has thrown the TD passes. ND has almost 95% of the guys coming back next year. Not only will they be very good but they will have depth. In 2010 I don't belive ANY team will come within 14 pts of this team and ND will win the National Championship. Guy's who are leaving in the next two years who are 2& 3 star players are being replaced with 4 & 5 star players.

Look for ND to go 8&4 on the year but lose at NC  31 to 20

Rock ON !

I like can understand LSU's four cupcakes, but they did go on the road and beat Auburn.

Good top 10 though, only other thing I don't like is Georgia ahead of Alabama, Alabama won heads up.

WeWillRise...I like your idea, but your Top 10 is kind of wierd IMO.

This is mine, feel free to attack.

  1. Missouri
  2. Oklahoma
  3. Penn State
  4. Texas
  5. Georgia
  6. Alabama
  7. USC
  8. BYU
  9. Florida
  10. Utah

If you will notice, no LSU.  That's what they get for scheduling 4 cupcakes nonconference and having all of them at home.  That gives LSU 8 home games and only 4 road games this season.  That's just pathetic for the "best" team in the country last year.

Mizzou and Oklahoma are interchangable, both have looked dominant in their games.  I have Georgia over Bama because that Bama game against Kentucky where the UK QB basically handed off to Bama giving them a free TD and that's the difference in the game?  It takes that to beat Kentucky?  They are not the #2 team, I am sure of that.

And I still have USC there because in all of their wins, they have dominated, 2 were over ranked opponents (you SEC fans like to use that "ranked" teams argument) and even in their loss to tOSU they nearly came back in only one quarter.

And hackman, you seem are are the moron.  Auburn hasn't done squat.  Who have they beaten?  Mississippi State?  And they only could score 3 points on them?  That's just pathetic.  And they have lost twice, I don't care whether they are "ranked" or not.

One of the most idiotic responses I have seen on here.
