CBSSports.com 120 -- No BCS for No. 9 Boise

Let the complaints begin.

We all know about Texas' beef with the BCS system. The Longhorns feel they should be in the BCS National Championship over Oklahoma because they finished with the same record and beat Oklahoma on a nuetral field.

We will continue to hear that talk through the New Year.

But what about Boise State?

The Broncos are ranked No. 9 in this week's CBSSports.com 120, but they will be left out of the BCS Bowl picture as a two-loss Ohio State will meet Texas in the Fiesta Bowl.

The Poinsettia Bowl, which will feature the Broncos and No. 11 TCU, will have two higher ranked teams than the Orange Bowl (No. 12 Cincinnati and No. 19 Virginia Tech). The Holiday Bowl will have No. 14 Oklahoma State and No. 15 Oregon.

"As long as the Ohio State players and coaches aren't tired of coming to the Valley of the Sun, we're not tired of having them," Fiesta Bowl CEO John Junker said. "The university is the same, but the players all are different. It's just another version of that great tradition, and anytime you can match up a co-Big Ten champion against a No. 3 program that people think should be playing for the national championship, it seemed like a natural."

Welcome to the bowl system -- it's not about how many losses you have or where you are ranked. It's all about tickets, TV ratings and marketability. And that hurts Boise State.

Last year, the Georgia/Hawaii Sugar Bowl had the lowest TV ratings of any BCS game, the year before it was Oklahoma/Boise State. And in 2005, if was the Utah/Pittsburgh Fiesta Bowl.

The Fiesta Bowl had the choice to take Utah or Boise State instead of the Buckeyes, but President John Junker chose to go with the Buckeyes even though they've played there four times since 2003.

"It was (discussed)," Junker said of Ohio State's visits to the website Cleveland.com. "But it's not like it's professional football. Obviously in the years that (Ohio State has) appeared, it's always a different group of players with the changes on their roster."

Sorry Boise State, take your undefeated record and higher ranking somewhere else. But don't feel bad for them, because Ohio State coach Jim Tressel doesn't.

"I've got to be honest with you, I didn't feel for them, because I'd rather go," Tressel said of Boise State. "I'm a compassionate guy, but to an extent ... I'd rather the Buckeyes be there."

Boise will now take its show on the road to San Diego in what could be one of the best non-BCS games on the schedule.

Notes

... San Jose State (No. 70), Bowling Green (No. 80), Arkansas State (No. 84) and Louisiana-Lafayette (No. 92) are the only bowl-eligible teams not playing this postseason.

... The Hawaii Bowl features two of the lowest-ranked teams in the CBSSports.com 120 -- No. 65 Notre Dame vs. No. 67 Hawaii.

... Florida Atlantic is the lowest-ranked team is the lowest-ranked team in a bowl game at No. 85. The Owls lost to Arkansas State 28-14 a few weeks ago, but didn't make a bowl game.

This is the same problem I have with Hawaii fans. I really doubt that Florida, OU, USC ect. are scared to come play you. There's a couple of reasons. 1. The almighty dollar, a team like Florida would loose out on a ton of money traveling to Boise. A lot of Florida fans would not fly or drive that far for a team like BSU. 2. When you play the teams that Florida does, there is no need to travel for a weaker team to fill non conference slots. We may play cupcakes for out OOC games, but it's a nice break from the toll that playing in the SEC takes on teams, plus those smaller teams get great exposure and a truckload of money. Going undefeated is a great feat, but unfortunatley when you play in a non BCS conference, play a weak schedule, going undefeated doesn't look that great. SO be happy with the bowl you're going to and pray you win.

Darst,

Who you kidding? We will win our bowl game be ranked high and still, you will pick someone else to win the WAC.  Now you asking for all to give us respect? LOL!

LMAO!

I told you -- never again. Even if Boise State were to suspend all 22 starters for next season and start 22 freshman out of high school -- the Broncos are my pick

I was hoping Boise St. might decline a bowl out of protest. There's something wrong with the whole classification if you can get through your schedule undefeated and you don't even sniff a bowl against a major opponent. It's a worse snub than Texas received, in my mind.

Either you are FBS or you are not and, if you are, an undefeated season shouldn't be dissed. And, in particular, to send it their place a Big 10 team that lost their only noteworthy out-of-conference game and had no impressive wins in conference.

We all know the bowls are about asses and eyeballs and bringing in the most tourist dollars but Boise deserves better than to be dissed this way.

I'm not against Ohio State and Texas, but I think this proves that we need a playoff system... otherwise mid-majors have no shot at the national title. For those out there that think a mid-major team cannot pull out a victory remember what Boise State did to Oklahoma? They should at least get a legitimate shot at the national title, if they lose, they lose... but  it'll be better than all this complaining.

Hey 2holsn1,

How do you know that Pinkel voted that way? Is there a website or anything that shows each voters ballot because if so I would love to see it. Post a link if there is.

I agree that I think TCU will win. Who would have ever imagined that the Armed Forces Bowl would have 2 better teams than the Orange Bowl. Ohio State doesn't deserve to be in the Fiesta Bowl and I have a feeling that Texas is going to hang 50 plus on them.

TCU will kick Boise St butt. I agree politics kept Boise out and put Ohio St. in . Ohio St. beat Youngstown St. , Ohio and Akron plus Purdue , Northwestern, Minnesota, and Michigan in conf. Best win was Wisconsin who almost got beat by Cal-Poly. Utah beat TCU, BYU , Air Force and Oregon St. Boise only beat Oregon and their 4th string QB. Boise deseves to go but definitely not ahead of Utah. BCS will never take 2 non-BCS teams in one year. Look at how the coaches voted in the final poll. Pinkel from Missouri had Utah at 15 and Bosie at 16 but Cincinnati from a BCS league at 14. No frickin way.

PLAY SOMEBODY IN THE REGULAR SEASON?

This is the most stupid and flawed argument. Why? What is Boise St supposed to do when schools DON"T want to travel to Boise? All Big 10, ACC and SEC Teams want to play AT HOME so spare me the stupid argument like Olr fart Corso and Herbstreit about THEY NEED TO PLAY A TOUGHER SCHEDULE! You can only play who want to play with you and UTAH is going to New Orleans to get killed! Do you want to bet? Do you think that Alamaba fans will travel more than 300 miles away to watch a game?

Wrong.  OSU has played poorly in the last 2 games, not "year in and year out" as you so short-sightedly put it.  We've won 4 BCS games, and lost 2.

It is Boise State's fault that they play in a weak conference.  They should take Cincinnati's lead (ConfUSA to BigEast) and join the Pac10 (or at least make it seem like they're trying to) so they can actually claim to have a decent schedule.  The Big10 had a down year, but that's unusual; the WAC is ALWAYS a bad conference.  Take some responsibility for your team's position.

Take out the politics, and you've basically got 2 points to argue: overall record and strength of schedule.  BSU wins the former.  Now, if only they had some magical number to rate the strength of schedule between BSU and OSU ... wait, they do:  OSU - 43.  Boise State - 115.   Looks like a tie to me.  Tie goes to the team that brings more fans, more money, better ratings.

It is plain and very simple. The top ten teams in the BCS standings should play in the BCS bowl games. Why is that such an unimaginable thought?

Oklahoma is 0-4 in their last 4 BCS games.  Their overall BCS record is 2-4!  Thats pathetic!  They do not deserve to go to the NC Championship game because of what their teams have done in the past.  Oklahoma lost 2 National Championship games in consecutive years and one of those games was a 55-19 loss to USC.  Oklahoma has lost to LSU, USC, Boise State and WVU, so it doesnt matter what conference they play in the BCS they lose.  They are slow and always overmatched in BCS games.  I hope UF kicks the crap out of them because they dont deserve to be there based off of what the previous OU teams have done in the past.  (Isnt this a fun argument to make, p.s. OU is worse than tOSU in BCS games, why dont you care about that?)
