Blog Entry 120 -- No BCS for No. 9 Boise

Let the complaints begin.

We all know about Texas' beef with the BCS system. The Longhorns feel they should be in the BCS National Championship over Oklahoma because they finished with the same record and beat Oklahoma on a nuetral field.

We will continue to hear that talk through the New Year.

But what about Boise State?

The Broncos are ranked No. 9 in this week's 120, but they will be left out of the BCS Bowl picture as a two-loss Ohio State will meet Texas in the Fiesta Bowl.

The Poinsettia Bowl, which will feature the Broncos and No. 11 TCU, will have two higher ranked teams than the Orange Bowl (No. 12 Cincinnati and No. 19 Virginia Tech). The Holiday Bowl will have No. 14 Oklahoma State and No. 15 Oregon.

"As long as the Ohio State players and coaches aren't tired of coming to the Valley of the Sun, we're not tired of having them," Fiesta Bowl CEO John Junker said. "The university is the same, but the players all are different. It's just another version of that great tradition, and anytime you can match up a co-Big Ten champion against a No. 3 program that people think should be playing for the national championship, it seemed like a natural."

Welcome to the bowl system -- it's not about how many losses you have or where you are ranked. It's all about tickets, TV ratings and marketability. And that hurts Boise State.

Last year, the Georgia/Hawaii Sugar Bowl had the lowest TV ratings of any BCS game, the year before it was Oklahoma/Boise State. And in 2005, if was the Utah/Pittsburgh Fiesta Bowl.

The Fiesta Bowl had the choice to take Utah or Boise State instead of the Buckeyes, but President John Junker chose to go with the Buckeyes even though they've played there four times since 2003.

"It was (discussed)," Junker said of Ohio State's visits to the website "But it's not like it's professional football. Obviously in the years that (Ohio State has) appeared, it's always a different group of players with the changes on their roster."

Sorry Boise State, take your undefeated record and higher ranking somewhere else. But don't feel bad for them, because Ohio State coach Jim Tressel doesn't.

"I've got to be honest with you, I didn't feel for them, because I'd rather go," Tressel said of Boise State. "I'm a compassionate guy, but to an extent ... I'd rather the Buckeyes be there."

Boise will now take its show on the road to San Diego in what could be one of the best non-BCS games on the schedule.

... San Jose State (No. 70), Bowling Green (No. 80), Arkansas State (No. 84) and Louisiana-Lafayette (No. 92) are the only bowl-eligible teams not playing this postseason.

... The Hawaii Bowl features two of the lowest-ranked teams in the 120 -- No. 65 Notre Dame vs. No. 67 Hawaii.

... Florida Atlantic is the lowest-ranked team is the lowest-ranked team in a bowl game at No. 85. The Owls lost to Arkansas State 28-14 a few weeks ago, but didn't make a bowl game.

I Guess we will never know will we? By the way, did you know that tOSU turned down a non conference game against BSU during scheduling? There's a little unknown fact for you to chew on Oooh, the big bad Buckeyes scared of a l'il WAC team. Friggin Little 11 conference runners up...

Got two things to say about this:

The BCS system is not "broke" and I hate it when people say it is. I order for the BCS system to be broke, that would imply that it actually worked at one point. If you need further explanation, then...yeah...

OK kids, here's the skinny (that I'm sure you all know). MONEY is keeping BSU out of the BCS. Period. They aren't in the Big Boys Club. Ratings suffer when "small schools" play in the big games. Not that I think it's right mind you. I'm like the only BSU fan in Illinois, and not a bandwagoner either by the way. I've followed them since the Brock Forsey era. I really think Chris has expanded on a solid program and turned it into a really amazing program. I believe he's 35-3 in three years now? Now with that all said, I'd like to see what could be done by BSU (as well as every other non BCS conference school who has been robbed of a BCS Bowl game) in regards to filing a class action law suit against the BCS as well as the NCAA. Could you imagine if the 19th best team in the MLB was "invited" to the postseason? A 4 loss VT team in the BCS is as stupid as putting the Illini in the Rose Bowl last year. Maybe NASCAR can invite the 19th place driver to join the Chace thing they do. There's a fine like between common sence and stupidity. They didn't cross the line here, they broke the line and threw it away.

Boise State you are all complaining about not getting a bid into a BCS game.  Maybe you should play a non conference season that
doesnt include FCS compitition Idaho State 1-11 this year.  Take Fresno's lead and Utah go and play someone.  Yea you go play one BCS team a year.  Wow Ohip State played ten or eleven.  Then you get into conference games and play the mighty vandals, the aggies of Utah State and New Mexico State.  there are three teams that ohio state would beat by forty plus.  just like you did.  the difference is they could pull their starters in the third quarter not the last drive of the game to get those style points that mean nothing to voters when the teams have a combined seven or so wins and three were against each other.  So when you go play USC, Penn State, and Wisconsin or any other three BCS teams in one seasom with no losses or at least keep the score close no more Georgia BSU from three years ago.  then you can complain.  remember Oregon is the first BCS team you had ever beaten away from the smurf turf in the regular season.  I think you are like 3-8 against BCS teams away or home in you whole teams history.

Hey, I have an idea!

How about Boise State and either Washington or Washington State switch spots?

Washington/Washington State - welcome to the WAC

Boise State - let's see how you do in a REAL conference, with the likes of Oregon and USC on your schedule every year!

Quick, name three NFL players from Boise State. Didn't think so.

Ryan Clady, Chris Carr, Darren College, Orlando Scandrick, Korey Hall, Gerald Alexander, Legadu Naanee, Quintin Mikell, Jeb Putzier, Derek Schouman......oh wait you just said three

Err not really. Texas is going to embarrass Ohio State.

Texas should be playing Bama or Utah. Ohio State really doesn't belong.  The matchups are very poor this year. It would have been nice to see a Boise State / Texas Tech (battle of the teams that got screwed out of the BCS Trackmeet).

This year the matchups are poor at best.

Just my thoughts

I love how people are so jealous of the Buckeyes that they actually start backing a "program" like Boise State. BS is not even in the same league as the Bucks. People a need serious check. They play no one. Quick, name three NFL players from Boise State. Didn't think so.

Is anyone here willing to tell me that you HONESTLY believe that Boise State could blow through a Big Ten schedule AND a nonconference game against Southern California in their house...undefeated???

And is anyone here willing to tell me that you HONESTLY believe that Ohio State couldn't EASILY blow their way through Boise State's schedule, what with the formidable foes of the Western Athletic Conference??

Enough said...

  • Everyone always says Notre Dame gets put into BCS bowls because of their name and money draw, but what about Ohio State.  Where is their big-time win?  My goodness what is an Irish fan doing talking about anybody? Go crawl under your rock and solve your coaching and image problem first. We piity you...and by that I mean USC fans, Michigan Fans, OSU fans, Syracuse Fans etc. I feel sorry you have such an awesome tradition and since firing Lou Holtz a Buckeye.. you have gone down hill fast. Your school chose not to join the Big Ten...but our teams alwyas beat you and OSU has beat you the three times we have played you ( 94,95 and 2006 fiesta BCS game)
  • So phone a freind and face the facts you guys are a joke! With all the money of NBC contracts, recruits and image...yet you have a 6-6 season and get to go to a bowl game....please no room to talk.

Here's how it works: College Football is a roller coaster with perennial powerhouse teams.  The only way for a non-powerhouse team to gain ground on the powerhouses is to go to their house and beat them.  The powerhouse teams will not sign up for a one and one with Boise State.  Texas and OSU?  Yes - done.  USC and OSU?  Yes - done.  Boise State cannot expect any perennial powerhouses to come to them.  Boise St should follow the route of App State and others.  'Play somebody in the regular season' is not an argument, but a statement of how the game is played if you want to get ahead.  David needs to go to Goliath to make his name heard, not vice versa.
