BCS Championship Notebook: Utah No. 1?

While many of the players from Oklahoma and Florida were preparing for their matchup to decide who will be crowned BCS Champion, they couldn't help but take notice of what Utah did against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl last night.

Utah, which is the only undefeated team in the nation, knocked off the SEC runner-up 31-17, a wider margin than what the Gators did in the SEC Championship (31-20).

Jermaine Gresham says he'd prefer a playoff system. So does Utah deserve a share of the national championship?

"When they play big teams every week, maybe we can talk," said Florida safety Ahmad Black. "Not to take anything away from them, but their strength of schedule isn't up to par."

Despite beating four Top 25 teams throughout the season, including Oregon State, which was the only team to beat USC, the Utes SOS is ranked No. 57 according to, while the Gators' is ranked No. 3. Oklahoma's is No. 1.

"Utah played their butt off and very hard against a great Alabama team. They were the better team that night," said Oklahoma tight end Jermaine Gresham. "I know they are undefeated and that's great, but we have to just roll with it."

How about one more game? Utah vs. the winner of Oklahoma vs. Florida.

"I don't mind a playoff," added Gresham. "I prefer it to this system. The problem is the teams that win now, they think they are the best. If we go to a playoff we can see. I think that would be right."

Stoops and Broncos

Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops' name has come up as the NFL's Denver Broncos seach for a new coach, but that's news to Stoops.

"What situation? That's a rumor that I have not heard and no one has contacted me about that so I don't know anything about it," said Stoops. "We're preparing for a national championship and that's all my focus and all my concentration's on so obviously I'm not a candidate."

It's not the first time Stoops' name has come up for a NFL coaching job. The coach with a 109-23 overall record in ten seasons as Oklahoma, including 32-12 vs. ranked opponents, had his name come up for the Dallas Cowboys job in 2007 and the Kansas City Chiefs job in 2006.

Murray = Bush

Oklahoma will be without do-it-all sophomore DeMarco Murray, who is out after having surgery to repair a hamstring injury.

Murray finished the season with 1,002 yards rushing, while also averaging 27.6 yards on kick returns and scoring 18 total touchdowns. Chris Brown, who leads the team with 1,110 yards rushing and 20 touchdowns, gave Murray quite the compliment during Saturday's press conference.

"Whenever you look at us, DeMarco is like a Reggie Bush-type of runner, and I'll be the LenDale White," said Brown. "He can catch out the backfield like Bush and turn something small into a huge play. I'm more conservative and wait for things to develop."

Tickets, please

While Oklahoma has no players from South Florida (Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties), the Gators have plenty.

Florida has 17 players from the tri-county area, including safety Major White (Miramar/St. Thomas Aquinas), who was an honorable mention All-American.

"As soon as the game was over against Alabama, I got calls from people saying 'Can you get me this? Can you get me that?' I only get six tickets so I was only thinking about that."

BCS Championship Notebook: Utah No. 1?

I am a Utah fan, big time and have not made any comments about being number one.  But for all you so called big time team fan and mainly you cocky SEC fan, please look at your 2008 schedules again.   Give me a break.  Alabama for instance, did not have a tougher schedule than Utah and had a lower end of season SOS.  The East Coast schools and their East Coast writers have an inflated view of their world.  The Big East and ACC Orange Bowl was a total waste.  I will pick out just one more team from the Mountain West Conference that would have sent Virginia Tech out a bowl win.  TCU would have beat both teams like a circus monkey.

BCS Championship Notebook: Utah No. 1?

Hey did you hear that Utah could beat the steelers? They could.  Does that sound ridiculous?  Good.  That's how alot of these comments flowing from mouths of espn viewers(where they form there opnion) sounds to me. USC could beat Utah? How has that been determined? UF could beat Utah too? OU could beat Utah?  Have any of you nay sayers ever had your own opinion?   How does this one sound?  Utah has played every team put in front of them.  Some were not as good as others, Just like every conference.   THEY HAVE NOT LOST A FOOTBALL GAME!  Last year in the NFL the Patriots( who the Utes could have beat btw) went undefeated.  We should have put them as like a 3 seed right? maybe 4 or 5?  If you don't lose, and beat very good competition along the way, why should'nt they have the title of "#1"?    I hear alot about the BCS and how we need a playoff, I agree but it is what it is right now.  The majority of the people I hear on hear suggesting that Utah is not deserving are fans of the 2 teams in the NC game,(and some dillusional USC fans, you lost to the team the Utes beat) so there opinions shouldn't matter,  considering we are discussing making the Utes the ap #1.  Of course these fans do not want to hear that there potential winning team will have to share the AP National title with a "non-bcs-mid-major-who-has-bee
-a-nice-story".  Save it.  You want to tell me that your team could beat Utah?  You didn't even beat "ALL"the teams put on your schedule, you should worry about beating the teams in front of you instead of hypothetically beating the UTES!

UTAH WON...Stop being bitter...UTAH is a good football team who can play with anyone on anyday. All these haters out here need 2 get off of their HIGH HORSES and COME BACK DOWN 2 REALITY!!!...Just like Alabama got KNOCKED off their HIGH HORSE and azz in the Sugar Bowl. UTAH is a HUNGRY TEAM that commands RESPECT by BEATING teams....What else do they need 2 do?...Just ask the teams that beat them..OH WAIT NO ONE BEAT TEAM...thats right. UTAH should be ranked #1 or 2 at the worst!!!...I got 2 go!!...ENOUGH SAID!!!

I would say that Hawaii, Citadel, Arkansas, South Carolina, and Tennessee are no better than Utahs schedule. Utah beat 4 top 25 teams and 2 top 10 teams > I do not believe Florida did that. Every BCS conference has their cupcakes ie Washington, Washington St. UCLA, Colorado', Iowa St, Kansas St., Syracuse, Duke, Miss. St, Tennessee, Arkansas, Michigan St., Illinois and a whole bunch of others. Each BCS conference has 2-4 top teams and 2-4 poor teams. Just assume Fla and Oklahoma would beat Utah just like everyone assumed Alabama would beat Utah and you and your teddy bear will sleep better at nite.

Lets be honest, saying this team would beat that team etc., etc., is pointless. You can look at comparable schedules and opponents. But until a playoff of some sort is instituted, nothing will be diffinitive. Would Utah beat Florida or Oklahoma? Most said they would beat Alabama, and they not only beat them, they manhandled them in every aspect of the game. They are clearly the better team. Even if you add one offensive tackle, they still end up with most of the sacks as the majority didn't even come from Paul Kruger and the side on which Smith plays. It is true that the University of Utah has tried to line up home and home agreements with the big schools from the Big 10, SEC, and Big 12- but none of them want to come in to Rice Eccles and loose as no BCS team has left SLC with a victory. The Utes have also won thier last 7 games vs. ranked opponents. That is why you see them rarely making a trip to Michigan, Notre Dame, or others. I do think the Utes should be given a share of title if it means an earlier demise to the BCS.  Playoff!

The fact is until they get a playoff we will never know who the real number one is. Utah went undefeated beat Alabama by more than Florida did. I would split it between Utah and the Florida -Oklahoma winner. I do however agree that USC has a good argument  but that is why THEY NEED A PLAYOFF. The whole thing is so frustrating that I watch fewer games each year.

By the way........i do bellieve Utah beat TCU in the last minute of the game with the score being 13 to 7 maybe.  ohh yah who else did TCU lose to....i just cant think of it......wait its coming to me....oh yah they lost  35 to 10 to OU with TCU soring a touchdown with a 2 minutes left. Utah great season but come in here and say without a doubt you could beat OU thats just ridiculous.

BCS Championship Notebook: Utah No. 1?

Utah is #1! As was Boise St. 2 years ago. I have officially boycotted all bowl games. I may boycott college football all together. It is a biased voting system. The rankings should not even come out until after 4 weeks.....just look at Wisconsin! It is all about keeping the money where they want it to keep teams like Utah and Boise from being the new power programs. For those of you griping about the scheduling....Teams like Ohio St. (Overrated St. U.) and Joklahoma REFUSE to play these teams. Look at the out of conference schedules year in and year out. Every year these guys (Utah and Boise) try to get big name opponents. Last year Ohio St. back out of a prior commitment to play Hawaii...for fear of getting wasted. The Big 11? ACC and Big East of not worthy of their free walk ins! Until a proper system is in place, I will not watch. It will never happen though, the people in charge just happen to be the heads of the "BIG 6" conferences!

And if the University of Spoiled Children did not lose to Oregon State, we would see if they could beat either of these teams. But USC lost to Or State..again. Beat teams in your conference before you whine about how you could beat the teams playing for the National Championship.

Wouldn't want to have UT stoop to the level of the losers would we? Until we have a playoff, the "champion" will always have a tainted title!
