BCS Championship Notebook: Utah No. 1?

While many of the players from Oklahoma and Florida were preparing for their matchup to decide who will be crowned BCS Champion, they couldn't help but take notice of what Utah did against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl last night.

Utah, which is the only undefeated team in the nation, knocked off the SEC runner-up 31-17, a wider margin than what the Gators did in the SEC Championship (31-20).

Jermaine Gresham says he'd prefer a playoff system. So does Utah deserve a share of the national championship?

"When they play big teams every week, maybe we can talk," said Florida safety Ahmad Black. "Not to take anything away from them, but their strength of schedule isn't up to par."

Despite beating four Top 25 teams throughout the season, including Oregon State, which was the only team to beat USC, the Utes SOS is ranked No. 57 according to, while the Gators' is ranked No. 3. Oklahoma's is No. 1.

"Utah played their butt off and very hard against a great Alabama team. They were the better team that night," said Oklahoma tight end Jermaine Gresham. "I know they are undefeated and that's great, but we have to just roll with it."

How about one more game? Utah vs. the winner of Oklahoma vs. Florida.

"I don't mind a playoff," added Gresham. "I prefer it to this system. The problem is the teams that win now, they think they are the best. If we go to a playoff we can see. I think that would be right."

Stoops and Broncos

Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops' name has come up as the NFL's Denver Broncos seach for a new coach, but that's news to Stoops.

"What situation? That's a rumor that I have not heard and no one has contacted me about that so I don't know anything about it," said Stoops. "We're preparing for a national championship and that's all my focus and all my concentration's on so obviously I'm not a candidate."

It's not the first time Stoops' name has come up for a NFL coaching job. The coach with a 109-23 overall record in ten seasons as Oklahoma, including 32-12 vs. ranked opponents, had his name come up for the Dallas Cowboys job in 2007 and the Kansas City Chiefs job in 2006.

Murray = Bush

Oklahoma will be without do-it-all sophomore DeMarco Murray, who is out after having surgery to repair a hamstring injury.

Murray finished the season with 1,002 yards rushing, while also averaging 27.6 yards on kick returns and scoring 18 total touchdowns. Chris Brown, who leads the team with 1,110 yards rushing and 20 touchdowns, gave Murray quite the compliment during Saturday's press conference.

"Whenever you look at us, DeMarco is like a Reggie Bush-type of runner, and I'll be the LenDale White," said Brown. "He can catch out the backfield like Bush and turn something small into a huge play. I'm more conservative and wait for things to develop."

Tickets, please

While Oklahoma has no players from South Florida (Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties), the Gators have plenty.

Florida has 17 players from the tri-county area, including safety Major White (Miramar/St. Thomas Aquinas), who was an honorable mention All-American.

"As soon as the game was over against Alabama, I got calls from people saying 'Can you get me this? Can you get me that?' I only get six tickets so I was only thinking about that."

BCS Championship Notebook: Utah No. 1?

All the SEC fans, Ahmad Black, and USC fans need to shut up about strength of schedule. The best team Florida beat this year was Alabama who Utah also beat, then Georgia, who is overrated and loss to Georgia Tech,  and after that they played no one else. Not only did Utah go undefeated, they played a harder schedule than Florida.  They beat Oregon State who beat USC, TCU whose only other loss came from Oklahoma and also handed Boise State their only loss, and a good BYU team in a big rivalry game. The SEC and especially the PAC 10 are overrated conferences.  The teams in the Mountain West are better than those in the PAC 10 this year and the SEC. The mountain west went 6-2 v. the pac 10 this year, and 2-0 against the SEC.  The reason for so few games being played against the SEC is that SEC teams will only play the top MWC teams at home but won't come to Provo, Salt Lake, or Fort Worth because its to big a risk and they don't want to be exposed for what they really are and that is an overrated conference.

BCS Championship Notebook: Utah No. 1?

You would want utah to go away because all of the better athletes on the field in the sugar bowl played for the real U and no that is not Miami. I saw Julio Jones out there. When he was on the field against utah's d he was like the 5th fastest player on the field. Here's to florida and oklahoma you guys can have your tainted bcs title because thats what it will be. No one is undefeated but the utes so stick that in your crack pipe and smoke it and just maybe florida can come up here to utah next year and we can ask you how are ass tastes next year you sec myopians.

BCS Championship Notebook: Utah No. 1?

Nicely done... thanks!  I love it when some of these fans support their own teams by talking about how tough their schedule is, but they don't want to talk about how their power house teams beat up on Saint Mary's School for the Blind in the first couple of weeks.  I know that Utah didn't play the same caliber of teams that the Big 12 or SEC did... but neither did USC, and people think they deserve a shot at a split title as well.  What does it really mean?  This year - maybe more than ever - we really need to have some sort of playoff system in place.  I hate to jump on that bandwagon, but how will we ever really know if Utah could have beat some of these other teams if they don't get the opportunity to play them.  It's kinda like you pointed out... Mississippi vs. Florida... nuff said!

BCS Championship Notebook: Utah No. 1?

This is why they need playoffs!  Yet it is always the Pac-10 and the Big-10 that vote no every year...hmm wonder why that is? can you say WEAK!  USC beats a Big-10 pansy, who hasn't done that the last 3 years!  Maybe the change we were being pushed down our throat with is going to be the push for playoffs by the next President! We can only hope it's long over due!

I don't think they deserve #1 but I do give them credit for at least trying to increase their schedule difficulty. Had Michigan not been so weak this year, Utah's fate could have been different assuming they still won.

This Bama fan says YES!

Listen, Bama may not have been a true No. 1 most of the year, but it wasn'y a slouch. When you can play for the league championship in the best conference you ain't bad. But, no one kicked us around like Utah. They played us a heckuva lot better than Florida, which will probably beat Oklahoma since no one in the Big 12 plays defense as evidence by the bowl games. I am now a huge Utes fan. They played with class too. I have nothing but respect for them.

BCS Championship Notebook: Utah No. 1?

We will NEVER know, b/c the geniuses in charger cannot follow the small school model and stop taking the advertising buck to save the system. Until the game overcomes the greed, it will never change and everything will be up for speculation. I for one think it sucks to have to be perfect to win the NC. Sure winning every game means something, but really in a playoff system the teams must prove themselves over a 3 game stretch rather than prepare for 4-6 weeks for 1 game.

BCS Championship Notebook: Utah No. 1?

No, Utah does not play in a major conference. However they did all that was asked of them and beat 3 very good opponents in OR st., TCU, and BYU. Then to top it off they were able to get up for the game against Bama.

They need INDISPUTABLE evidence just to make a call in the replay booth but they dont need it to declare a National Champion. Say all you want that the Utes do not play in a tough conference but with NO losses you cannot say they don't at least deserve a shot at it. Also, saying Bama couldnt get up for the game is a joke as well. People have seen the mid majors win in the BCS games before. Everytime the big six team is embarrassed, no one wants that to happen to themselves. Andre Smith being out does put Bama in a worse spot than usual but they're a a major sec power right? arent they supposed to be just loaded with talent especially over the likes of little ole UTAH. Even so, Utah put up 31 points against a big powerful SEC D. That is what they pride themselves on, is it not? They say a Big 12 team wouldnt put up big numbers in the SEC but Utah did. You can not say Utah doesnt deserve a shot. Maybe they would be destroyed by OU or FLA or USC but we can never know and that is a shame
