BCS Championship Notebook: Utah No. 1?

While many of the players from Oklahoma and Florida were preparing for their matchup to decide who will be crowned BCS Champion, they couldn't help but take notice of what Utah did against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl last night.

Utah, which is the only undefeated team in the nation, knocked off the SEC runner-up 31-17, a wider margin than what the Gators did in the SEC Championship (31-20).

Jermaine Gresham says he'd prefer a playoff system. So does Utah deserve a share of the national championship?

"When they play big teams every week, maybe we can talk," said Florida safety Ahmad Black. "Not to take anything away from them, but their strength of schedule isn't up to par."

Despite beating four Top 25 teams throughout the season, including Oregon State, which was the only team to beat USC, the Utes SOS is ranked No. 57 according to CBSSports.com, while the Gators' is ranked No. 3. Oklahoma's is No. 1.

"Utah played their butt off and very hard against a great Alabama team. They were the better team that night," said Oklahoma tight end Jermaine Gresham. "I know they are undefeated and that's great, but we have to just roll with it."

How about one more game? Utah vs. the winner of Oklahoma vs. Florida.

"I don't mind a playoff," added Gresham. "I prefer it to this system. The problem is the teams that win now, they think they are the best. If we go to a playoff we can see. I think that would be right."

Stoops and Broncos

Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops' name has come up as the NFL's Denver Broncos seach for a new coach, but that's news to Stoops.

"What situation? That's a rumor that I have not heard and no one has contacted me about that so I don't know anything about it," said Stoops. "We're preparing for a national championship and that's all my focus and all my concentration's on so obviously I'm not a candidate."

It's not the first time Stoops' name has come up for a NFL coaching job. The coach with a 109-23 overall record in ten seasons as Oklahoma, including 32-12 vs. ranked opponents, had his name come up for the Dallas Cowboys job in 2007 and the Kansas City Chiefs job in 2006.

Murray = Bush

Oklahoma will be without do-it-all sophomore DeMarco Murray, who is out after having surgery to repair a hamstring injury.

Murray finished the season with 1,002 yards rushing, while also averaging 27.6 yards on kick returns and scoring 18 total touchdowns. Chris Brown, who leads the team with 1,110 yards rushing and 20 touchdowns, gave Murray quite the compliment during Saturday's press conference.

"Whenever you look at us, DeMarco is like a Reggie Bush-type of runner, and I'll be the LenDale White," said Brown. "He can catch out the backfield like Bush and turn something small into a huge play. I'm more conservative and wait for things to develop."

Tickets, please

While Oklahoma has no players from South Florida (Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties), the Gators have plenty.

Florida has 17 players from the tri-county area, including safety Major White (Miramar/St. Thomas Aquinas), who was an honorable mention All-American.

"As soon as the game was over against Alabama, I got calls from people saying 'Can you get me this? Can you get me that?' I only get six tickets so I was only thinking about that."

BCS = BULL CRAP SYSTEM...

UTES should be #1

They proved it... only undefeated team in D1?

Sucks that people who sit behind desks get to pick whoever the National Champ is, instead of letting these men play it on the field....

BCS makes me sick...

Also, I used to watch College football a lot... but this year, has been a total bust... Texas got the snubb, Utah might not get the National Title IT DESERVES, SEC is overrated as always, I hope they fix this very soon.... I can't stand the BCS

It says Utah beat Alabama 31-14..now I do feel Utah should be number one and should be playing for a national championship that does not that they should get the score wrong.  Yes even if they got the score right Utah did beat Alabama more than Florida did but if you are gonna right about something get all the stats and scores right...Utah beat Alabama 31-17..and i know this is a small error but if you are a sportswriter the score should never be wrong that is all i am saying.  And if people wanna say why are you wasting time writing?  I will ask why you people are reading it.  All I am saying is Darst please make sure you have the score right.

BCS Championship Notebook: Utah No. 1?

For all of you saying that Utah loses to Florida, USC, or Oklahoma, how do you know?  Before the game against Alabama 90% of America thought that Alabama would win (According to an ESPN online poll).  The game wasn't even close!!!  I'm sure that the majority of people saying that Utah could not defeat UF, USC, and OU, were the same people that said Utah could not beat Alabama.  And for those of you saying that it wasn't a shock that Alabama lost, give me a break.  I would bet money that none of you predicted before the game that Utah would win, much less beat them handily.  Stop with the excuses, your opinions mean nothing.  It can only be truly decided on the field, and it is not fair that an undefeated team has no opportunity to prove it in that way.

The Utes are undoubtedly the best in football. If a one loss Florida or Oklahoma wants to come up here and prove us wrong after their "championship" let them. Otherwise no one will prove themselves better. Congrats to this champion Ute team. By the way, USC has no argument for no. 1 because Utah beat the team they couldn't.

BCS Championship Notebook: Utah No. 1?

So, let me get this straight, the BCS computer polls and the human polls both figured Utah was number six and Alabama was number four, and we're debating whether six-beats-four merits number one.  Nope.  Utah is a good team, but Bama got beat by a Florida team in a game that had National Championship implications.  Florida beats Utah 9/10 times.  Florida/OU is the best National Championship game we could wish for.

BCS Championship Notebook: Utah No. 1?

USC Overrated, Florida Overrated, Utah UNDERATTED

USC lost to Oregon St, Utah lost to no one.

Florida beat Alabama by LESS than Utah, and lost a game - Utah lost to no one.

Strength of schedule is an inbred measure based mostly on conference perception of the past, not of the the present.  MWC went 6-2 against Pac 10, not included in SOS.  A lower tier MWC team beat Tennessee at home, not in SOS (especially since a bad SEC team is suppose to beat a good MWC, heck one of the best SEC teams can't even one of the best MWC teams!!!

Wake up!!  All you BCS bigots who are shaking in your boots, there is no difference, only what you want to believe.   Utah should be playing for the national championship and could beat all comers - FACT!

All the BCS conferences need to stop relying on a politcal Bc$ program to keep them on "top" and let their game do the talking... And I can't believe how weak asz Alabama excuses are circulating, "they lost a tackle", "they weren't inspired", "they were overrated" just makes me sick.  Your a bunch of whinny spoiled brats who want your big daddy Bc$ to rescue you since your game can't.  So called mid majors are 3-1 in the BCS that use to be called the "affirmative action bowl".

They have a theme that sums up just about the whole situation "big hat no cattle"....  Start chanting that instead of S-E-C.

Go Mountian West..!

BCS Championship Notebook: Utah No. 1?

I agree that Alabama losing in the SEC championship then in a bowl vs a non-BCS team is not a big shock.  They were overrated all year.   Are you saying this disqualifies Utah from being a national title contender?  Can we also disqualify Florida then, for losing to Mississippi and then beating Alabama?  If Utah is disqualified from being #1 by beating Alabama, then Florida should be too.  Then who does this leave?

Oklahoma, Texas, or USC.  All great teams, but it is hard to tell if they are better  than Utah.
