Early BCS Projections, Part 2

With Dennis Dodd's updated Spring Top 25, let's take a look at part 2 of the early, early BCS projections:

BCS: Ohio State vs. Georgia. The top two teams in the nation would meet in Miami for all the marbles. Obviously this is an early projection, but for now let's assume Dodd's top 2 teams remain there all season.

The Rose Bowl would get first choice of all the replacement teams, but they love to keep that Big Ten vs. Pac-10 tradition, so expect them to take another Big Ten team if they can -- maybe Illinois or Wisconsin. Now if USC is the Pac-10 representative, I'm not so sure they take Illinois in a rematch game. Wisconsin vs. USC would be there best choice, but it IS possible for them to take a Big 12 team, not likely, but if Missouri is way up there, maybe Top 4, it could have a Missouri vs. USC game.

Now the Sugar Bowl also would lose an anchor team (SEC Champ), so it would get second choice of all the remaining teams. And you better believe if Florida is ranked in the Top 7, the Gators and Tim Tebow are heading to New Orleans.

So now we need to put the rest of the conference champs in place. ACC Champ -- projected Clemson -- heads to the Orange Bowl; Big 12 Champ -- projected Oklahoma -- heads to the Fiesta Bowl.

So this is what we have:

BCS: Ohio State vs. Georgia
Rose: USC vs. Big 10 No. 2 (Wisconsin/Illinois) or Missouri
Orange: Clemson vs.
Sugar: Florida vs.
Fiesta: Oklahoma vs.

Now the rest of the selection for 2009 is as follows -- Fiesta, Sugar and Orange. With the Fiesta getting first choice, they probably would pass on West Virginia to avoid a rematch, but could take Arizona State, if the Sun Devils finish high enough in the final standings. Now if Missouri ends up in the Rose Bowl, then Wisconsin in the Fiesta would be the most logical choice.

Next up is the Sugar Bowl, and they would snag West Virginia (Big East champs) or Missouri. West Virginia travels well, Pat White's final game or the prospects of taking the Big 12 runner up with a potential Heisman Trophy winner in Chase Daniel.

The Orange gets the final pick and still could end up with Missouri if everybody elses passes or West Virginia depending on who the Sugar Bowl takes in front of them.

Now here is the big kicker -- BYU. They could be the BCS party crasher this year. They will start out in the preseason Top 20, could easily run through their conference games. Their non conference games are Northern Iowa, Utah State, Washington and UCLA. Now, they beat UCLA last year and the game is in Provo, but still could lose and they travel to Washington on Sept. 6. If BYU qualifies, they most likely will be headed to Miami, unless the Fiesta Bowl shocks everybody and takes them with the first selection after the replacement picks.

BCS: Ohio State vs. Georgia
Rose: USC vs. Illinois/Wisconsin/Missouri
Orange: Clemson vs. West Virginia/Missouri/BYU
Sugar: Florida vs. West Virginia/Missouri
Fiesta: Oklahoma vs. Arizona State/Wisconsin/BYU

I think that I agree with you.  It was a little hard to understand, but I agree with you about the OSU, BYU part.  I hope you don't mind that I put you as a fave of mine.  Good point and thanks for the vote of confidence from Cougar backer.

Early BCS Projections, Part 2

I know we can argue about rankings and BCS and polls etc all day long, but if abc, bcs, ncaa, espn see a multi - million dollar payday at the end of the season out of scheduling an unbeaten OU, Mizzou, Bama, LSU against the only other unbeaten team in the country and it just happened to be Utah or Boise or Tulsa or BYU or NONBCS then I guarantee that they would find a way to make it happen.  Money still talks and cash is king - bottom line.  Everybody loves a david v. goliath and the BCS would want to shut up the NONbcs once and for all, while everybody would love to see the match-up ppv if possible, if not ads would sell more millions like SB time.  Even remote fans and viewers would tune in becuase it surpasses a sports game, it becomes a national interest.  So if the last two unbeatens happen to be 1 nonbcs then it will happen, a nonbcs team in the BCS championship game.  Let's sit back and enjoy the ride because there are a lot of unbeatens left in bcs and non alike.  Buckle up ncaa football fans.

Georgia will most likley win the bcs championship game. they have 2 heisman canidates for a backfield; an amazing defense;  a young but experienced o-line; and a really good recruiting class coming in. Does any other teams have that. Really. I would love for Alabama to win it,but in reality Georgia will most likely win it all.

Unfortunately I think you might be right about Clemson winning the ACC. They are the most overrated team in college football right now. They have a joke of a schedule, they play two quality games against Alabama and South Carolina. So, they should win the ACC. However, they are the royal choke artists of this past decade. So only time will tell if Clemson trips on that stroll through a cupcake factory they call a conference schedule.

Over the past thirty years, OSU has a bowl record of 0-9 against SEC teams.  Can we make it a Perfect 10 this January?

Darst what if this happens?  W.V.,USC,Mizzu,Tn,Miami, all goes undefaeted? What could or should happen?

Wow, what a mess. It all comes down to voters and strength of schedule. I got to think USC is going to be in, because they'll be preseason Top 5, have beaten Ohio State. So I got to guess they would be in...as for the others.

Miami -- Not going to be in the Preseason Top 25 and winning the ACC isn't all that impressive, so count them out.

It all comes down to Missouri, Tennessee and West Virginia. I think Missouri and Tennessee would carry the most weight. They would have gone undefeated and won their conference championship game, something West Virginia doesn't have to do.

SEC Undefeated champ or Big 12 undefeated champ vs. USC.

Let's hope this happen, would love to see how the BCS people justify THAT one.

So Darst, you're implying that BYU won't get into any BCS bowls. Is this because they will lose a game or is it because that even if they go undefeated, there will be so many other more desireable teams availbable to pick from

No, I haven't really made up my mind just yet, I'll wait until the season gets a little closer.  This is what I said in my original post:

BCS: Ohio State vs. Georgia
Rose: USC vs. Illinois/Wisconsin/Missouri
Orange: Clemson vs. West Virginia/Missouri/BYU
Sugar: Florida vs. West Virginia/Missouri
Fiesta: Oklahoma vs. Arizona State/Wisconsin/BYU

If they go undefeated, they are a LOCK for a BCS bowl, especially since I think they will start in the Top 20 in the preseason. If they win at Washington and beat UCLA, I think they'll have an excellent chance to go undefeated. The selection order process is strange this year with the Orange Bowl getting the last pick. So unless the Fiesta wants to prove a point and take BYU because they are close to Utah, its either Orange or Fiesta for the Cougars.

I love BCS busters, so I'll be pulling for them. Now, if they lose a game, I dont see them making a BCS Bowl.
