Coaches Poll

Posted on: August 1, 2008 2:48 pm

The preseason Coaches poll is out and surprise, surprise -- Georgia is No. 1.

Actually its not that big of a surprise. Most expected Georgia to be ranked in the top 2. What I do find somewhat surprising is Ohio State is No. 3. Is there an anti-Buckeyes movement among the coaches? Or is there just a love for USC. I'm sure the community users have an un-biased answer.

Not that it really matters because the Buckeyes will play No. 2 USC on Sept. 13. I'm pretty sure the winner will by No. 1 or No. 2 after that game and all this preseason nonsense will mean nothing.

The defending national champions check in at No. 6, right behind Oklahoma (No. 4) and Florida (No. 5).  That makes three SEC teams in the Top 6.

The biggest surprise to me is Clemson at No. 9 -- that's pretty high for a team that has high expectations every year, but always falls short. The Tigers are pretty stacked this year, especially at running back, so I'm sure the coaches see them as the class of the ACC.

BYU checks in at No. 17, which is pretty good for them to make a run at that BCS bowl. They won't have far to go to get into that top 12 if they finish the season undefeated.

A few teams with losing records last year, got votes in the preseason poll -- Nebraska (5-7) got 17 votes and Notre Dame (3-9) got 5 votes. Arizona (5-7) and Colorado (6-7) each got one vote.

Potential BCS Bowl Predictions (based solely on the Preseason Poll, which we know means nothing, but it sure is fun):

BCS Title -- Georgia vs. USC

Rose: Ohio State vs. Arizona State

Orange: Clemson vs. West Virginia

Sugar: Florida vs. Missouri

Fiesta: Oklahoma vs. BYU

Come on Darst, you should know this.  BYU, being a mid major program will end up in the Orange this season.  I could argue the possibilites of which mid major will bust the BCS this season, but your pick for BYU is just as possible as a few others.  But you need to brush up on your BCS selection process.  Maybe this will help:

I just hope if Arizona State finishes this season as highly ranked as last season, that a horrible show for a BCS team like Illinois won't take our BCS spot away again.

Coaches Poll

First off,
being ranked #3 is getting hated on and of course their underrated, quit whining.

No need to whine...#3 at this point is perfect in my book.

As for forsaken's position analysis, as I see it, neither team has a significant advantage at QB, WR and Back 7.

OSU has an advantage at O-line (4 starters back, best 2-deep of Tressel era) and RB (say what you want about SC's stable, but Beanie Wells is a proven stud, and Brandon Saine has serious jets...legit 4.3 for a 220 lb guy...nice change of pace.

USC has an advantage at D-line.  OSU will be able to replace Vernon Gholston at DE, but unless they have improved with age and experience, their DT corps are a bit wanting.  SC's greatest advantage is having the home field, and I think that is the main reason they are favored by Vegas.

First off,
being ranked #3 is getting hated on and of course their underrated, quit whining.

Second,
who's the better team right now and who has been the better team for the last five years, at least.

WR
Turner and Hazelton being big with great hands, good luck in the red zone!
Compare that with OSU who has, uhhh who?

OL
Two starters are back and the other three started at least 2 games last year.
Again, they have the two top OT's coming in as freshman.

QB
Mark Sanchez, versus whichever OSU QB, I'll take Sanchez.

DL
the D-Line has the best rated DT in CFB right now and you will be hearing about a kid from AZ at DE real soon, don't worry.

RB
USC has had the best stable of running backs in the nation for going on five years now.
They have more of a heritage in that department than OSU.
Think RB=Heisman at USC: Reggie Bush, Charles White, Marcus Allen, O.J. Simpson, and Mike Garrett (the current A.D.)

Back 7
Taylor Mays, a sefety that runs a 4.45 40 at 225 and OSU will serve well to remember where he is at all times.
Maualuga, Laurinitis is a great player, but guys like Maualuga, who is a monster, show up once every ten years, maybe.
Plus Brian Cushing is no slouch as he will also be one of four top 20 picks coming out of this USC Defense.

USC has brought in better quality talent!

Remember quality not quantity!

Can't wait till September at the Coliseum.

Coaches Poll

hey there fresh!

while i agree byu is not a bcs team, who do you think will beat them in conference?  i guess utah?  i love tcu but they aren't as good as the cougars this year.  i'd be pretty stunned if byu isn't the conference champ.  i wish we could play them actually...better than coastal.

I think BYU is a flovor du jure for the preseason. I don't think they will winn the MWC let alone make it to a BCS game.

Coaches Poll

Coaches Poll is out, but the projections have not figured in the fact if West Virginia and USF are undefeated when they play in Dec., if this happens it will be hard for me to believe that the winner of this game will not play in the BCS title game, both of there strength of schedule is as good as anybodies else ( except for the SEC teams) but there is a pretty good chance this is a real possibly.

Great, another Fiesta Bowl, and another team that we should dominate.  But guess what, I bet we don't.

Still...BOOMER!

I am so ready for this season, if for no other reason than to see how in the hell it compares to last year's insanity!!!

Best of luck to ALL squads (sans USC, Texas, and our little step brother Picken's State)!!!
