BCS vs Playoff

Once again, we just finished a season that started off with an amazing victory by an underdog surprising the entire college football nation. If we all need to be reminded, Appalachian State defeated Michigan Labor Day weekend in the Big House 34-32. App State's win over the Wolverwine's opened up one of the craziest seasons I can recall in recent years in Division I. My problem is how the BCS is set up, there were several team's that should have had a chance to go for the National Championship and were unable to, because the system is set up wrong. Several of the bowl games were simply boring.

The NCAA has a playoff system set in place for every other level of college athletics, why is Division I College Football different? The difference my friends is greed, plain and simple, in order to be bowl eligible, you have to win six games, which, I think is absolutely ridiculous. Oh shew, we have won our six games, we will get our bowl invitation. What ever happened to the hard work ethic for each game, giving it your all each time you lace up your cleats and put your pads on? The NCAA could put in place a playoff system in Division I, it would work, and they could still utilize the bowl sponsorships but in a different manner. Each round could be at the same locations of the bowl sites, and be sponsored by the same sponsor, for instance the Chick-fil-A round in Atlanta, GA. This would work, and they would still get the money.

In recent year's team's have not been put in the championship game because they were not a championship caliber team. Who's place is it honestly to make this decision? Why are they robbing us of a potentially exciting and new championship run? This year team's were left out of the BCS Championship that were late number ones Missouri and West Virginia, but then had to play in their Conference Championships. Both of these team's lost in their Conference Championship's and the door to a BCS Championship was abruptly slammed on them. In a playoff system at least these team's would have been given an opportunity to demonstrate that they were championship caliber team's, and their own destiny was in their hands.

Bottom line the system is broken, it needs to be fixed. Look at the FCS (formerly Division I-AA) their 16 team playoff system works, has for years, find something that works and implement it. I guarantee fans will be a lot happier.

BCS vs Playoff

The thing that kills me is that App State is also an institution of higher learning. Their students have to go to class just like the big universities.  They also hold the banner of NCAA in their gyms. So why are the suppossed big schools fighting not to have a playoff. Please don't tell me money because a sixteen team four round playoff would make a killing. Michigan vs USC. Missouro vs LSU, Florida vs West Virginia, even Hawaii vs Illinois. Who wouldn't pay to see these games in the first round of a playoff system?MadDog1099, I totally agree with you. App State gets a bum rap all the time, but we are a higher institution of learning, you have to apply to get in, have a certain score on those stupid tests.  Those student athletes work just as hard as Division I.

And I think a playoff system would payoff, just imagine the excitement it would create. Look at what March Madness does. How many people plan time off around that time of the year? Regardless of the team's that are in? If had a bucket of money and there was a Regional here every year...I am there, same goes for a football playoff, because you might see some of the best games, classics take place right there before your eyes.

BCS vs Playoff

I just don't see how a playoff in college football division 1 can be a bad thing. How come every other division and sport in the NCAA&nb
sp;has a playoff with the exception of the most popular?????? (college basketball is probably most popular 1a) You cannot argue with March Madness and Championship Week in college basketball. To me, it's the most exciting time of year in sports. College football can easily accomplish a playoff system that works. Imagine the top 8 teams playing for a few weeks in late december, early january for the national championship?!? Look at how exciting the NFL playoffs are now! It's 'win or go home'....it's not 'We are in the Gator Bowl, so let's try to win it but its ok if we lose cause it doesnt really mean anything'.

If you take the AP Top 8 from this year look at these 1st round matchups:

1) LSU vs 8) Oklahoma

2) Georgia vs 7) Kansas

3) USC vs 6) West Virginia

4) Missouri vs 5) Ohio State

not too bad, huh?! I mean, the BCS matchups this year were very good as well, but the games didn't have the magnitude that a playoff would have. These conference and university presidents can sure as hell think of something that would work money and advertising wise.

Here's to a playoff!!!!!

BCS vs Playoff

I really think that playoffs are the only way to go.  And I know that whole money and sponsers thing but trust me, if they really were to consider making a playoff, anything can be worked around.  The fact is, the people that would make that decision have no interest in it.  Cause if they did, then it would be done with or without the sponsers.  The money and sponsers for NCAA D-I football will always be there I guarantee it.  So don't let anyone try to tell you otherwise.

BCS vs Playoff

I can't believe I am going to agree with a JET fan....   What is the world coming too....  (lol)      PLEASE,   we need a playoff system.   Who really cares about the present bowl system which means nothing...  Other than the LSU/ Ohio State game, what other game meant anything? Is USC better than Georgia? Are they both better than Ohio St? Would LSU be National Champions today, if there was a playoff system?  Maybe...   but we will never know..   Plus, it would really add to the holiday season.    &nbs
p;Setting up a playoff system really would not be that hard.  They could also use several of the current bowls to host these games.  We all seem to know that a playoff system would be great. For as smart as college presidents think they are,  ARE THEY.............   &nbs
p;   How do we fans get this situation turned around?   Maybe we should get Congress involved... right after they are done with baseball  (lol)

BCS vs Playoff

I'm just fine with the BCS system. It seems everyone has a complaint though. A couple years ago it was the computers messing everything up and the wrong teams are in the NC like in 2003 when Oklahoma lost their Big 12 championship game. Now everyone is complaining that the Big 10 is too easy and we need to make sure that they are that good before we let them go to the NC. The Big 10 recuits in it's own states mostly. Sometimes a little in Florida and a little in Texas and Califorina. It just matters if more talent is coming out than the previous years.

I am for the Playoffs for because it evens out the playing field. There is no doubt in anybodies mind that the Big 10 is the slowest and weakest BCS conference. Which allows a team like OSU to coast through the season without playing a top 10 team. A 8 team playoff would force the best team in the nation to win three games in a row against top 10 teams. Man that would be great. The SEC and Pac-10 teams wouldn't have to worry about going undefeated and would only have to focus on winning their conference, then proving what they got in the following weeks. I don't see why the NCAA board members won't give us what everyone wants. A fair way to crown the undisputed National Champion.
