One game in, Broncos have a Cowboys feel to them

I tell myself it's the Raiders.

"Eric, it's just the Raiders.

"Eric, it's just the Raiders.

"Eric, it's just the Raiders."

But I can't get this thought out of my dome.

The Broncos are the Rocky Mountain Cowboys.

"Eric, it's just the Raiders."

This is a Broncos team that finished 21st in points last season and 11th in yards, while the Cowboys finished second in points and second in yards.

"Eric, it's just the Raiders."

But last night Eddie Royal looked like ex-Cowboy Terry Glenn in his prime, or for 2008 comparisons sake, a smaller Patrick Crayton. Tony Scheffler, made the most of his one catch (we'll ignore the dropped TD), while doing a Jason Witten run-after-the-catch impersonation. No-longer suspended Brandon Marshall is Terrell Owens (in style and substance), Andre Hall and Selvin Young have a poor man's Marion Barber/Julius Jones appeal and Jay Cutler was slinging like Tony Romo. Eddie Royal

"Young scribe, with the amount of time Cutler had, former Broncos legend Jarious Jackson could have put up 300 299 yards. BTW, it's just the Raiders."

I respectfully disagree. Some quarterbacks are good at screwing up ideal situations (see: Tarvaris Jackson, Rex Grossman). It's one thing to have an opportunity; it's another to take full advantage of it (Google Derek Anderson + Charlie Frye).

Cutler has the intellect of Chad Pennington, but the arm strength of Jeff George. He's Chad George, but only the good parts of each.

Here's what I mean. Even on plays when he's bad, he's not that bad. Late in the first half, residing in the end zone with the clock ticking, he called Brandon Stokley's number in the front-corner of the end zone. However, he didn't hide the fact he was throwing to Stokley, who had the outside position. The defense read it and played it well, but a good throw by Cutler would still have been catchable. Cutler threw a bad pass. But it wasn't bad like some QBs throw bad passes. As Harry Doyle would say, it was a bit high and a bit outside, but it was really hard. Point being, if Stokley wasn't going to catch it, nobody was going to catch it. That's progress, folks. Being a gunslinger is one thing, harnessing your boomstick arm is another.

The Broncos play in the AFC West. That means another go-at with the Raiders, two Kansas City games and two vs. my bust team of the season, San Diego. After one week, things look good in Denver. Of course, they also look good in Baltimore, Atlanta and Buffalo.

But I get the feeling Cutler gets it. I get the feeling Royal was stuck playing with some god-awful quarterbacks in Blacksburg and I get the feeling the Broncos have a bit of swagger that comes from having a coach with stability and an organization that gets IT. Get, get, get, get, get, get...

Get it? No? That's OK, after all, it was "just the Raiders."

Baster's Sports Spin examines if Red Sox Nation is a myth. The blog says it's more a byproduct of success than city size. I say it's more a product of large cities with transient, if not relocated fans throughout the country. Alot of people who grow up in New England don't end up going to universities in New England or living in New England, hence the spread of the nation. Same with New York and Chicago.

Chris Young's flirtation with a perfect game Sunday is reason enough for Scott Miller's Bull Pennings to pause in the middle of his playoff beat and tip his pen/typing fingers to the big ol' pitcher.

I'm all for the Cowboys feel as long as it the statistical kind.

We don't need no Michael Irvin crap.

It was nice to Cutler get off to a great start.

Is Bucky Dilts still the punter?

Man Eric not to long ago i said the same exact thing about the Broncos having a swagger going into this year! I don't know what it is, things just seem optimistic. I mean last year when it took us OT and the invention of "Icing the kicker" to get past the Raiders then we lost by 2 TD's later in the year. If we can put up 41 points W/OUT Brandon Marshall aka Baby TO aka The Beast then i can't wait to see what we do vs Cromartie, Jammer (He is on the Bolts right?), and the Merrimanless Chargers. Should be a good game! And if we win this game i see us having a shot at the division. And it's a perfect year for us to come back to being a playoff team again with the Pats, Colts, Jags, etc.. being down this year. Yes it's only week 1 but things are looking good in the Mile High City!

One game in, Broncos have a Cowboys feel to them

Some thoughts:

I'm a huge Broncos fan...so take this as you may.

Last year, the Broncos played the Chiefs in a similar fashion.  They came out after losing, I think, and ran the Chiefs into the ground.  The aftermath was not pretty.  However, the Broncos looked like they were a team that was at least 10-6.  Well, we all know the story and how that's not the case.  I too thought the exact same thing throughout that game...it's just the raiders...it's just the raiders....it's just the raiders.

Well, lets face it.  A lot of it was the raiders.  If I'm not mistaken, the Raiders were only 5 yards short of granting the Broncos a full 100 yards worth of penalties.  That's Pathetic.  Two or three longs balls (I think it was just 2) down the middle that were just overthrown but the Broncos secondary was beat.  The Raiders did see some balls hit their hands and then fall to the ground.  The Raider's defense was just terrible...but I think that credit really does go to the Broncos Offense who just obliterated the Raider's Def.

So what am I saying?
This Broncos team would've beaten the Raiders even if the Raiders had not made so many mistakes, no doubts about it.  The Broncos Offense, clearly going places.  Agree with the Dallas look.  The Broncos Def...for all intents and purposes...better than last year's.  Still not great though.  The Giants Def beat NE, not Eli Manning.  Case scenario Broncos...Jay Cutler much much much better than Eli Manning.  Bronco's Def < Giants' Def.  So...things look bright...but lets not get ahead of ourselves.  Broncos Fan.

One game in, Broncos have a Cowboys feel to them

I'm a fan of this blog now for two reasons:

Kay's response rate is amazing.

As is his taste in beverage.

That said, I'm a mile high on Denver as well right now.  Against my better judgment, I ran out and grabbed Eddie Royal as well.  I'm crossing my fingers, because my bench was loaded.

He's flexing out for me next week, he better be ready.  I'm starting Cutler too.  This is, I promise you, as excited as this Vikings fan can get about another team.

Remember though, his value is pretty low right now. Wait until he has a decent game, which I'm expecting to happen vs. the Chargers. After all, playing against the Raiders the Broncos could basically do whatever they wanted, vs the Bolts I'm expecting a more conventional gameplan that relies a bit more on the run. Very true, excellent point.  I too have Young in multiple leagues.  I was hoping to ride the "every back is a 1000 yard back" Broncos system but that seems to be fading a bit.  We'll see what happens next week.  I'll keep my fingers crossed for a better stat line next week.

As someone with Young on multiple teams, I empathize. Remember though, his value is pretty low right now. Wait until he has a decent game, which I'm expecting to happen vs. the Chargers. Yes sir.

Well hell, that makes the bet even better....for you that is.

A note on point:  The Broncos looked really good last night.  Eddie Royal was a beast and he made some really smart plays.  Cutler, Marshall, Royal, and Scheffler could do big things this year.  I've heard that the Raiders are supposed to have one of the best secondarys in the league.  Couldn't tell from watching last night.

I do have a bone to pick with the Broncos though.  Mike Shanahan is killing me in Fantasy.  I had Selvin Young last night only needed 20 yards from him to win my game.  I was biting my nails for the better part of the game.  I sat watching as Hall got carry after carry.  This RBBC crap is killing me.  Now I have to move Young in a trade deal.  I'm not putting up with THAT headache all season.  Thank god Adrian "All Day" Peterson is my number one back.
