GM for a Day: Be just like Jim Bowden!

Posted on: November 6, 2008 6:10 pm
Not to get all demanding on the community (we do ask a lot, but it's only because you're awesome), but here's the pitch (as stolen from Shuless Joe) --

Love warming up to the Hot Stove this time of year? If so, we're looking for you to have a little fun role playing in a new feature we're calling GM for a Day. Jim Bowden

With dozens of big-name players and hundreds of others on the move this offseason, tell us how you would fix your favorite team and where players should land.

Like the thought of Jake Peavy in pinstripes? Tell us how the deal with play out. Just like a Scott Boras negotiation, there's nothing out of bounds here. Think the Dodgers can get Manny, CC and still bring back Derek Lowe, tell us how it unfolds.

What to do: Title your blog entry GM for a Day and just start writing. We'll be scanning the blog boards for the best Hot Stove fare and promoting it throughout the site.

Keep in mind, at the start of '09 we'll be going around asking some of our community's best baseball minds to be beat bloggers next season, so this is a good head start for that.

If this sounds like something you might be interested in, throw your hat in the ring on this thread, and post a couple good blog entries about anything relating to the Hot Stove. Just title your blog GM for a Day.

Thanks for your time, and now back to my regularly scheduled blogging.

GM for a Day: Be just like Jim Bowden!

Let me be Cashman for a year. I'd try and bring in Peavy, Sheets, Lowe, or Sabathia. And sign Teixeira, after all, the Steinbrenners owe me.

I really hope you promote more realistic unbiased suggestions instead of just the hometown fans saying my team should get every good player available. That Cubs guy from a week or two back was really bad....

GM for a Day: Be just like Jim Bowden!

Three-Team Trade: Cubs get P Matt Cain from SF and P John Grabow from PIT; Giants get 1B Derrek Lee, SS Ronny Cedeno from CHC; Pirates get P Jason Marquis and cash from CHC.

Cubs trade P Rich Hill, OF Felix Pie and C Luis Flores to the Rays for OF Carl Crawford.

Cubs trade SS Ryan Theriot, C Welington Castillo and P Jose Ascanio to the Rockies for SS Troy Tulowitzki.

Cubs sign P Ben Sheets to a one-year, $5MM deal with incentives.

Cubs sign IF Felipe Lopez to a two-year, $5MM deal.

Cubs re-sign OF Reed Johnson to a two-year, $6MM deal.

Lineup: 1) RF Carl Crawford, 2) SS Troy Tulowitzki, 3) 3B Aramis Ramirez, 4) 1B Micah Hoffpauir, 5) LF Alfonso Soriano, 6) C Geovany Soto, 7) 2B Mark DeRosa, 8) CF Kosuke Fukudome, 9) Pitcher

Bench: IF Mike Fontenot, IF Felipe Lopez, OF Brandon Snyder, OF Reed Johnson, and C Henry Blanco.

Rotation: Carlo Zambrano, Matt Cain, Ted Lilly, Rich Harden, and Ben Sheets

Bullpen: Sean Marshall, Chad Gaudin, Kevin Gregg, Neal Cotts, Jeff Samardzija, John Grabow, Kevin Hart, Angel Guzman and Carlos Marmol as the Closer.

Cubs finally have a prototypical lead-off man in Crawford. Tulowitzki is an upgrade offensively and defensively at SS, even though they lose the higher OBP guy in Theriot. Hoffpauir, the reigning minor league POY, is sandwiched between Ramirez and Soriano; he will get a lot of pitches to hit. I believe Soriano will also see more pitches batting down in the order with ROY C Geovany Soto behind him. Mark DeRosa is "Mr. Utility" and Fukudome will have little pressure as the second lead-off man in the 8-hole. Fukudome is a good contact hitter and can do a lot of damage deeper in the order. Fontenot can platoon with DeRosa at 2B, not to mention DeRosa's ability to give days off to corner OF's and corner IF's. Felipe Lopez can play every IF position and give MGR Lou Piniella a switch-hitter with speed off the bench. Brad Snyder gives Sweet Lou a big left-handed bat off the bench. And C Henry "Hank White" Blanco is pivotal for bringing along a young Soto and talented rotation.

The Cubs have an All-Star rotation with Carlo Zambrano, Matt Cain, Ted Lilly, Rich Harden, and Ben Sheets. If Sheets or Harden needs extended rest, Hart and Marshall can give the Cubs spot starts. Carlos Marmol will be the new closer on the north side. I believe he is ready, and he will be more consistent knowing he is the ninth inning guy. It will be set-up man by committee with a lot of live arms in the bullpen (Gaudin, Gregg, Samardzija, Hart, and Guzman; not to mention some crafty lefties with Grabow, Cotts and Marshall).

Payroll for 2009: $122,506,000
