NBC Bob Costas Rips Usain Bolt, Live

Posted on: August 18, 2008 8:29 pm

Bob Costas, of NBC, said that Jamaica's Usain Bolt showed no respect for his competitors, the Olympics and the entire audience for breaking the 100m dash world record, his own world record, by just 300th of a second in the final on Saturday.

I totally understand Mr. Costas. It is exactly how I felt Saturday morning when NBC refused to show the 100m dash final live in the USA. It was broadcast more than 12 hours later.

NBC showed no respect for the competitors, the Olympics and its entire audience.

At least Bolt had a very good reason to showboat. He is an Olympic champion, the fastest man on earth. I can only imagine how it feels to dominate the most important race of the Olympic Games in front of the entire world. Well almost the entire world...

Costas' argument is that Bolt could have done better. Sometimes I wonder if people think before talking. 100m in 9:69 is not good enough for Mr. Costas. It must be that high standards apply only to others.

How is showboating at the end of the race any different than an NFL player showboating when they make a big play, and start highstepping or "diving" into the endzone to score a TD? When a football player does it, they are called showboaters, but when Bolt does it, he gets a clean pass? Sorry. I appreciate the records Bolt broke, I can marvel at his speed, and I can congratulate him on winning gold. However, Costas is right. There is no need to taunt the other competitors like that while the race is still going. If Costas is suggesting that by not showboating, Bolt would have beaten the WR by even more, he is absolutely correct. Bolt's showboating slowed him down slightly. It doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the race, but, Costas is right. I think Costas would prefer athletes to get the job done first, wait until their event is over, and then celebrate, and I can't fault him for that. Athletes need to act like they have been there before.

Its unfortunate that people who saw Costas say that will assume that all Americans feel that way.....from reading comments and talking to people I think the average American who watched Usain Bolt is amazed by his talent and not at all offended by his celebrations.  When you take on the title "Fastest Human to Ever Live", it comes with a certain sense of extreme confidence.  If the other sprinters have a problem with his celebrations (and I don't think they do), then there is an easy solution......beat him

Bonds and Chad Johnson are also good athletes, but arrogance is arrogance and Bolt fills the bill.  What a dip!

Make Bolt an American and we're only talking about how great he is and how excited we are to see him race again. I can't believe I even heard people talking about his family celebrating too much. Give me a break. And quite frankly Bolt doesn't owe anybody anything, so don't start that mess about feeling cheated you couldn't see him run all the way through. How about being excited you just saw the greatest sprinter ever. Somebody better get them steroids back to the sprinters.

what wrong. freedom of expression is whats on the finish line. everybody has one way or another to show their joy of victory. at least it wasn't black gloves upon closed fists, though i'm white and that victory salute has never bother me. white power, hippie power. black power. its all cool if no violence follows.

Speaking of controversy at the Olympics. . .has anyone seen what the Beastie Boys are doing to protest? There's an interesting video piece on it at HandyCaptain.com. Crazy. And are they really into wagering?

Chelsea, you clearly have no idea what you are talking about.  I will agree with you that Bolt is the best sprinter in the world, but the key there is sprinter.  What Phelps did, he did in sprint events and middle distance events in multiple strokes, and he even won both races that require you to be good in every stroke. The guy even set an American Record in an event he doesn't even swim in.  If Bolt were to win the 100, 200, 400, 800, 110 Hurdles, 400 hurdles, and both relays, then maybe you could compare what the he did to what Phelps did.   Phelps is the best swimmer in the world, period.  Bolt is merely the best sprinter, not the best track athlete in the world.

It's a shame...

that he didn't run the race as hard as he could. It would've been nice to see what he really could run when he was serious about the whole race. When his WR is broken by 2-3 hundreths of a second he may wish he had.

Um Bob Costas has been well versed in sports for about the 30 years he's been in the business. I doubt it's his responsiblity to make sure guests have microphones as that's probably a stage manager's job. Are you kidding me? I guess you would want some unopinionated broadcaster that has nothing interesting or offending to say about anything. Maybe that person could simply just report who won the medals then go to commercial? He ripped on Bolt because what he did was disrespectful to the spirt of the games as you should know that since you love the Olypics so much. What if Bolt didn't get the world record because he showboated the last quarter of the race? Wouldn't you be pissed off that you wasted your time watching this guy waste an opportunity. That's exactly how I feel after watch that race this could have been a record that will never be broken, but know Bolt will probably break it again in a few months when no one is watching. Way to waste your moment infront of millions so you can pound on your chest and put out your arms like there is no competition for you.
