Barry Zito is not overrated, just overpaid!

Barry Zito is not as overrated as people think he is. He has won a CY Young award, he has a career ERA below 4, around 3.50, he has almost double the strikeouts than walks, he averages 14 wins a season through 8 seasons. He had one lowsy season. Maybe he can make it back up. 11-13 record is pretty good knowing his offense sucked. Remember at the deadline Matt Cain was 3-12 with an ERA below 4. That when you know your offense sucks.

Barry Zito is not overrated, just overpaid!

I guess before you can make the argument that anyone or anything is underrated or overrated, you must decide what it means to be "rated" to begin with.

With position players, I think you can go to the all-star voting.  With pitchers, it's a little trickier.  Is Barry Zito underrated, overrated, or neither?  I really don't know.  I'm sure he's overrated by Giants fans, underrated by many, and simply "rated" by the rest of us.

Barry Zito is not overrated, just overpaid!

Here are Barry Zito's numbers for the first four seasons of his career:

800.3 innings pitched
3.10 ERA
64 Wins
31 Losses
1.18 WHIP

Here are Zito's numbers in his last four:

870.7 innings pitched
4.17 ERA
53 Wins
48 Losses
1.34 WHIP

He is living off his name he made when he started off his career so hot but he is not the same pitcher. Cain is an excellent young pitcher who was a victim of getting the second worst run support in the league last season which caused his poor record, he was a bit of an anomaly

Thank you! I tried telling all those people in the "most overrated" thread and all they all kept saying he is the most overrated. No intelligent fan would say he is the most overrated.

Barry Zito is not overrated, just overpaid!

Barry Zito is right now underrated. He is not as bad as everyone is making him out to be, but when he signed that then record breaking contract, he was very overrated.

His numbers since his 2002 Cy Young season and 2003 solid year have been declining and erratic.

  1. His Strikeout totals have never matched his 2001 season, and have been declining by 20 a year since 2005.
  2. He walks way too many people, always has.
  3. His hits/inning have gone up in the past 2 seasons
  4. He hasn't pitched a complete game since 2003
  5. His WHIP hasn't been under 1.200 since 2003, and has been over 1.400 once, and very close a second time
  6. His innings dropped significantly last season
  7. He gives up a lot of homeruns considering the ballparks he pitches in half of the season.

So it's easy to see that Zito was overrated as a pitcher when he signed his contract, but right now, the way he is viewed, he is underrated. In retrospect, every single Mets fan should be thanking the high heavens they didn't land Barry Zito!
