Ok, here is the deal, every Friday I will post a new Blog in which we will choose the greatest player ever at a certain position. Until the next position is posted CBS members may vote for who they think the greatest ever is, at the end of the voting I will calculate every ones votes and will add that player to The Greatest Team Ever. I hope lots of you participate because I think this could be fun. I will try to post a running tally in a comment every day.

6th Position - DT      Vote for the best Defensive Tackles of all time!! Please post your vote in a comment, if you wish to give some insight on your choices feel free to do so. Please start your post with the players names, and please make sure that you are naming someone who played the positions being voted for that week, as those are the only votes that will count, Remember this week is a double dip and you will be voting for 2 players..........So who our Defensive Tackles?

Please remember to rate this blog entry, and all comments as I appear to be losing value points for doing this blog, I happen to believe a lot of you enjoy it however, so I will continue even though I may be a rookie by the time it is over!

The Greatest Of All Time Team needs DT's

Easily one of the sweetest Blogs. The format and the time frame in picking add to the legitimacy. That being said, the leader spells his last name G-R-E-E-N-E. Typo correction meant as an enhancement and no cut whatsoever! Thanks again for the Blog!

Anyway here's my votes:
#1 Bob Lilly "Mr. Cowboy"...Would be in traction at the hospital till Friday. Do a walk-through at practice on Friday. Wreak absolute havoc on Sunday.
#2 "Mean" Joe Greene...Anchor of the Steel Curtain line for their entire epic run.
#3 Merlin Olsen...Mr. Technique. Consummate professional who was never out of position, thus contributing to Deacon Jones becoming the greatest  DE.
#4 "Manster"  Randy White...Half man, half monster. Super Bowl co-MVP as a DT???!!!
#5 Alex Karras...The meanest DT ever. Never took a play off, dominant his entire career! Great quote about him in Jerry Kramer's book.
#6 Alan Page...No doubt the quickest DT ever. The master of leverage, he was elite at 238lbs!!!
#7 Warren Sapp...One man wrecking crew.
#8 Dave Butz...Anchor for 3SB winning Redskin teams. Had to be 2-teamed on every down.
#9 Art Donovan...Football funnyman was actually a great DT.
#10 Joe Klecko...Mr. NY Sack Exchange. He fed on QB's from the interior.

Special Note: Howie Long and Reggie White spent a lot of time at DT but I'll call them DE. Both are all-time greats at DT though!!!

Just to let everyone know if you don't see your vote counted it is because I have determined that the player you voted on is not eligible at the position we are voting on. Lyle Alzado, Reggie White, and Deacon Jones were known as DE's. They will have there time in a later vote.

The Greatest Of All Time Team needs DT's

I would have to go with Alan Page  as my first DT. Former first round pick out of Notre Dame and had a great career with the Vikings just check out these stats.

  • 148.5 career sacks
  • 9x Pro Bowl selection
  • 11x All-Pro
  • NFL 1970's All Decade Team
  • 1970 NFL Defensive Player of Year
  • 1971 NFL MVP
  • 1971 AP NFL Defensive Player of Year

My second pick would have to go too Mean Joe Greene. This guy help define the Steelers Steel Curtain Defense of the 70's. A class act.

  • Former 1st round pick #4 overall 1969 Draft
  • 78.5 career sacks
  • 10x Pro Bowl selection
  • 11x All Pro
  • NFL 1970's All Decade team
  • 1969 NFL Rookie of the Year
  • 2x NFL Defensive Player of the Year 1972/1974

Joe Greene is the #1 guy by far an easy choice there.

I would vote for Dan Hampton for the 2nd spot.  Danimal was a beast.  He was a huge piece of the 1985 Bears defense that was so dominant.  Going into Superbowl 20...The Bears had given up 0 points in the post season.  I can't imagine that happening today.

Ok so after reading further I am going Joe Greene and Merlin Olsen. i guess Jones was a DE, my bad. Just want to add, how about some love for Bryant Young, he is not top 5 all time but he is a great one that just hung em up.
