Posted on: March 14, 2008 10:21 am

Ok, here is the deal, every Friday I will post a new Blog in which we will choose the greatest player ever at a certain position. Until the next position is posted CBS members may vote for who they think the greatest ever is, at the end of the voting I will calculate every ones votes and will add that player to The Greatest Team Ever. I hope lots of you participate because I think this could be fun. I will try to post a running tally in a comment every day.

9th Position - Punter      Vote for the best Punter of all time!! Please post your vote in a comment, if you wish to give some insight on your choice feel free to do so. Please start your post with the players name, and please make sure that you are naming someone who played the position being voted for that week, as those are the only votes that will count..........So who our Tackles?

Please remember to rate this blog entry, and all comments as I appear to be losing value points for doing this blog, I happen to believe a lot of you enjoy it however, so I will continue even though I may be a rookie by the time it is over!

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs A Punter

Thanks for the stats on "Slingin" --Ray Guy from the Pro Football Hall of Fame:

He played in seven Pro Bowls and was named All-Pro six times and All-AFC seven times.  His top seasonal average – 45.3 yards on 69 punts – was recorded in his rookie season.  His longest punt in the NFL was a 74-yarder against Denver in 1977.  In the 1980 AFC Championship Game, he boomed a 71-yarder against San Diego.  Besides being a long-distance punter, Guy specialized in putting opponents in poor field position with his pinpoint punts.  In the 11 seasons after such records were kept, he was credited with 209 “inside the 20” punts.  More than a third of them – 77 – came in his final three seasons.

#1 - Sammy Baugh was the best punter ever. Period.
Who cares if he punted to Adam and Eve back in the day. His kicks proceeded ICBM's!!!
BTW, he was the greatest QB and DB of his day.
He and Jim Thorpe may be the finest all-around players ever. Only Bo Knows for sure!!!

#2 - Kudos to Jerrell Wilson as well. He, also of Southern Miss fame, was called by Ray Guy, everyone's sweetheart, the greatest punter Ray had ever seen. Including himself.

#3 - Ray Guy was a tremendous athlete, 3rd string QB, smooth at DB as well. In HS, a game was stopped so they could find an opponents teeth after Ray did his best Jack Tatum imitation!!!

I've got to go with Ray Guy, Lots of good punters but he was the first to really become stratigic and to be used as a weapon by his coach.

I guess I would have to jump on this fast moving Ray Guy vote train. Nine time all pro selection, member of NFL's 75th All-Anniversary team. A kicking machine who changed field position at will. The NFL didn't even keep track of punts inside the 20 yard line for the first three years he was in the league and he still ended up with over 200 for his career.

Yeah I know the award is named after him but in looking at the record books I couldn't see why.

My vote is for Sammy Baugh.

Not sure what the rage over Ray Guy is. His name isn't scattered over any record books. He was before my time.

Shane Lechler has the highest career punting average (250 minimum), and Sammy Baugh is the only punter in history to average over 50 yards/punt in one season. Baugh has also led the league in punting the most times, 4.

Jeff Feagles, by far, has punted the most times in NFL history, and has landed more punts inside the 20 than anyone else.
