Ok, here is the deal, every Friday I will post a new Blog in which we will choose the greatest player ever at a certain position. Until the next position is posted CBS members may vote for who they think the greatest ever is, at the end of the voting I will calculate every ones votes and will add that player to The Greatest Team Ever. I hope lots of you participate because I think this could be fun. I will try to post a running tally in a comment every day.

10th Possition- Fullback     Vote for the best Fullback of all time!! Please post your vote in a comment, if you wish to give some insight on your choice feel free to do so. Please start your post with the players name, and please make sure that you are naming someone who played the position being voted for that week, as those are the only votes that will count..........So who our Fullback?

Please remember to rate this blog entry, and all comments as I appear to be losing value points for doing this blog, I happen to believe a lot of you enjoy it however, so I will continue even though I may be a rookie by the time it is over!

I don't feel like reading through the seven pages of replies but I'm sure Lorenzo Neal has already been mentioned. He gets my vote. Of course as a Titans fan I'm biased...

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs A Fullback

Lorenzo Neal.

He was named to four Pro Bowls, his blocking cleared the way for eleven consecutive 1,000 yard rushers.  He is the quintessential fullback in today's game.  He performed extremely well and did everything asked of him, most of which were the things not measurable by post game stats and which were not tasks that many players would or could accomplish.

Brown, Csonka, and Nagurski were great fullbacks who were asked to carry more of a traditional running back role along with the fullback responsibilities.  Today's fullbacks are not tasked with many rushing duties and otherwise concentrate on the less popular skill of blocking and being the QB's safety net on short screen passes which are often met immediately by a sprinting linebacker.

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs A Fullback

If the Hall of Fame lists Jim Brown as a fullback, then how can you not go with him as the choice?  He was the all-time rushing leader until Walter Payton broke his record in '87.  It is amazing though how the fullback position has evolved since the 60's.  Today the fullback is rarely used to run the ball, only on short yardage situations.  Most of his work comes in run blocking.

mpsvsu - That WHO would be fellow of Hall of Famer Bobby Mitchell, at least for the first 4 or 5 years of Brown's short career.  Then Mitchell went to the Redskins in a deal that brought running back Ernie Davis (the guy who broke Brown's Syracuse rushing records) to play in the same backfield with Brown.  Davis died of leukemia before he ever played a pro game though.
