The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs Cornerbacks

Posted on: April 11, 2008 10:05 am

Ok, here is the deal, every Friday I will post a new Blog in which we will choose the greatest player ever at a certain position. Until the next position is posted CBS members may vote for who they think the greatest ever is, at the end of the voting I will calculate every ones votes and will add that player to The Greatest Team Ever. I hope lots of you participate because I think this could be fun. I will try to post a running tally in a comment every day.

13th Position- Cornerbacks     Vote for the best Cornerbacks of all time!! Please post your vote in a comment, if you wish to give some insight on your choices feel free to do so. Please start your post with the players names, and please make sure that you are naming someone who played the positions being voted on for that week, as those are the only votes that will count..........So who are our Cornerbacks?

Please remember to rate this blog entry, and all comments as I appear to be losing value points for doing this blog, I happen to believe a lot of you enjoy it however, so I will continue even though I may be a rookie by the time it is over!

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs Cornerbacks

#1 has to be Dick "Night Train" Lane.

Hardest hitting (albeit illegal hit now) CB of all time.
Set NFL interception record of 14 as a rookie.  A ROOKIE for godsakes!
Defined the modern position of CB.

#2  Mel Blount

All you have to know is that they had to change the rules of professional football because of his play.
Literally known as "The Blount rule", it  limited the amount of contact  a CB could have.
In other words, receivers could not get open if Mel was covering them.

Honorable mention

Darrell Green,  Rod Woodson, Willie Brown, Mike Haynes, Roger Wehrli

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs Cornerbacks

My vote goes to the neon one Mr. Deion Sanders. He was solely responsible for the way expersts refer to great cornerbacks and that is shutdown corner. The fact that many offensive coordinators refused to throw in his direction is the only reason he is not the all-time interception leader in the NFL.

bdamore ---nice call on mentioning Pat Fischer. He was a great one all right -- and to think he was something like a 17th or 18th round draft choice when he came out of U of Nebraska. He had a terrific career -- and was a big part of that Redskins Super Bowl VII team in 1972.

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs Cornerbacks

Definatley Jason Sehorn, I want a CB who decides to pull up his pants instead of pursuing the WR.

Seriously, Darrell Green and Rod Woodson.  Deion Sanders is a very close 3rd.

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs Cornerbacks

I just wanted to comment KingofBling's entry on page 2 of the thread. Excellent commentary on many of the greats who have not been mentioned by anyone else. I believe he has made one factually mistake and one omission. The omission is Night Train Lane but considering when he was in hey day I guess I can forgive that. The error is talking about Jimmy Johnson playing a season with casts on both his hands. The person who did that is the one who got my vote as the All Timer at Free Safety. His name is Larry Wilson of the St Louis Cardinals as tough a man who ever played the game.
