The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs DE's

Posted on: April 25, 2008 9:29 am

Ok, here is the deal, every Friday I will post a new Blog in which we will choose the greatest player ever at a certain position. Until the next position is posted CBS members may vote for who they think the greatest ever is, at the end of the voting I will calculate every ones votes and will add that player to The Greatest Team Ever. I hope lots of you participate because I think this could be fun. I will try to post a running tally in a comment every day.

15th Position- Defensive Ends     Vote for the best Defensive Ends of all time!! Please post your vote in a comment, if you wish to give some insight on your choices feel free to do so. Please start your post with the players names, and please make sure that you are naming someone who played the positions being voted on for that week, as those are the only votes that will count..........So who are our Defensive Ends?

Please remember to rate this blog entry, and all comments as I appear to be losing value points for doing this blog, I happen to believe a lot of you enjoy it however, so I will continue even though I may be a rookie by the time it is over!

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs DE's

I'm going old school on you guys and voting for Jim Marshall, DE, Vikings.  Forget about the wrong way run.  In his 19 year career, he started 282 consecutive games, 302 games if you include the playoffs. He was, to quote SI, .

"Twice he kept his streak intact by walking out of hospitals where he was recuperating from pneumonia and ulcers.  On another occasion, he played after accidentally shooting himself in the side while cleaning his shotgun.  Away from the game, Marshall was an avid sky diver, scuba diver, and snowmobiler."

Dude shot himself with a shotgun...then started an NFL game!  He holds the record for most fumbles recovered with 29.  He also had 127 sacks, but remember that number is an estimate, as he played before the NFL kept official stats for sacks.

DKM, please don't make this just a popularity vote...give some love to the old guys who helped define the position.

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs DE's

Krum,

An arguement can be made with those numbers, and I will make it.  Decon Jones played in an NFL that did not keep count of sacks.  NFL films guy Steve Sabol said he easily had 220.  I can't dispute that because I don't have access to the film (Sabol does).  Also I cna't remember who said it, but I remember hearing another retired DE say that if he played 21 seasons (as Bruce Smith did) he could have gottten to 200 as well.

Long and short of it is this, Decon Jones is widely considered the most dominent DE ever.  I'm to young to have seen him play so I can't say one way or the other.  I will however sya that someone who is widely respected by the people who watched him and played against him has my vote.  I had the chance to watch Smith play and I can name two or three guys in the league concurrent to him that were (in my opinion) better than he was.  Reggie White, Howie Long, and Mike Strahan (yes I said Strahan, that man is a force).

Decon Jones and Reggie White get my vote.

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs DE's

Lee Roy Selmon and Deacon Jones

Lee Roy Selmon will be my first choice as he was the only one worth anything on that defense and he still dominated... teams could have for an intents and purposes used their entire OL to block him and at times they did...

Not a fan on anyof these three , but I will go with Deacon Jones as he dominated everyone he played, he was on a great line, with Merlin Olsen to mention one... Reggie White was a stud, but he did have quite a bit of help from Jerome Brown to Gilbert Brown, Seth Joyner to Clyde Simmons... Bruce Smith was another stud, on the DL, but again had lots of help with Bennett and Talleymto name a few...
