The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs DE's

Posted on: April 25, 2008 9:29 am

Ok, here is the deal, every Friday I will post a new Blog in which we will choose the greatest player ever at a certain position. Until the next position is posted CBS members may vote for who they think the greatest ever is, at the end of the voting I will calculate every ones votes and will add that player to The Greatest Team Ever. I hope lots of you participate because I think this could be fun. I will try to post a running tally in a comment every day.

15th Position- Defensive Ends     Vote for the best Defensive Ends of all time!! Please post your vote in a comment, if you wish to give some insight on your choices feel free to do so. Please start your post with the players names, and please make sure that you are naming someone who played the positions being voted on for that week, as those are the only votes that will count..........So who are our Defensive Ends?

Please remember to rate this blog entry, and all comments as I appear to be losing value points for doing this blog, I happen to believe a lot of you enjoy it however, so I will continue even though I may be a rookie by the time it is over!

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs DE's

Don't get me wrong....Deacon Jones was one of the greats.......but does anyone really think he would've been great if the same player played today? Without the ( now illegal ) head slap, my humble opinion is no. As someone posted earlier, it's true - it's not all about sacks. Longevity, consistancy, and bringing headaches to offensive coordinators week in week out. So if it were possible to bring 2 DE's to the NFL today and put them on an ALL TIME GREATS team to play an exhibition game against, let's say the 2007 NFC Pro Bowl team:

#1. Deacon Jones - They didn't track sacks but nobody would have more than him if they had.

#2. Reggie White - Nobody else could play the run and pass as well as the Minister of Defense

Bonus Pick - Carl Eller. If you're old enough to have watched him play, you'll understand.

This to me might be the clearest cut choices out of all of the teams.  Reggie White and Deacon Jones.  I can close my eyes and visualize Reggie White, time and time again, lifting and throwing out of the way offensive tackles trying to stop him.  What started as a swim move resulted in a blocker sitting on his behind and cursing.  Quarterbacks must of cringed at the thought of Reggie coming after them.

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs DE's

Jasper I just used Strahan as an example. I love his play. especially as a Giants fan. You could take any of today's All Pro DE's and Jones is the same size as most of them and faster than them all.  Did you ever see him play? He was plenty strong. The fact that you state you will probably use other logic when it comes to selecting other positions on this "team" further weakens your argument. His sack numbers are even more insane when you consider how many less pass attempts there were when Jones played.

Have you picked any players who were in league before 1990? Did you think LT couldn't dominate in today's game as just because players today are bigger than there were 25 years ago when he entered the NFL?

It is obvious we will not agree on this so I will not make any more comments on your opinion. At least we can agree this is a great blog and makes for some good discussions

Jasper, your arguement could be used at every position and we'd pretty much have a team of somewhat current players. I thought we were looking at and judging by how players performed against their peers in their era. Every year the rules are tweaked to some degree and the players themselves get a little bigger and faster. To compare different players from different eras won't do. Take a decent RB, such as Brandon Jacobs and time warp him back to the fifties and he'd probably break every rushing record known. Virtually every generation is bigger, stronger and faster than the generation before it. I can see it with my friend's and my children for that matter. It's not a fair comparison in my mind. This the flaw in your reasoning IMHO.

By the way, Yankee, your premise would put forth the idea that Strahan is simply a speed rusher that 'blows past' OT's. Not the case. And by the way...I'm a Cowboys fan, so this is killing me to have to defend Michael Friggin' Strahan as my choice, but I know for a fact his repertoir contains much more than a apeed rush. Strahan has had his share of Bull rushes as well. THAT'S why he's so hard to defend.

Strahan is not an example, he's my choice. Your argument is a perfect example of why this is such a no-win proposition. I'm not comparing the physical status of either player. I'm comparing who they competed against. The head slap was Deacon's most effective tool, and they don't have that ability today. I also said that Deacon Jones may truly be the dominant force today that he was then. I don't happen to believe that, but I can't argue too strongly against it either. My argument is simply that Deacon didn't have to do what the players of today do against the quality of opponent they do it against. COULD he have? Maybe. I'll cast my vote for the players that did it...At least as far as this position is concerned. I reserve the right to completely reverse field on any other position.
