Posted on: April 25, 2008 9:29 am

Ok, here is the deal, every Friday I will post a new Blog in which we will choose the greatest player ever at a certain position. Until the next position is posted CBS members may vote for who they think the greatest ever is, at the end of the voting I will calculate every ones votes and will add that player to The Greatest Team Ever. I hope lots of you participate because I think this could be fun. I will try to post a running tally in a comment every day.

15th Position- Defensive Ends     Vote for the best Defensive Ends of all time!! Please post your vote in a comment, if you wish to give some insight on your choices feel free to do so. Please start your post with the players names, and please make sure that you are naming someone who played the positions being voted on for that week, as those are the only votes that will count..........So who are our Defensive Ends?

Please remember to rate this blog entry, and all comments as I appear to be losing value points for doing this blog, I happen to believe a lot of you enjoy it however, so I will continue even though I may be a rookie by the time it is over!

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs DE's

Jasper so why is Strahan so good as one example. He is smaller and slower than Deacon Jones was. Deacon was 6 5 275 and ran at the most a 4.5 40. The trend in todays game is quick defensive ends to blow past the behemoth  OT's.  Your argument simply does not make sense

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs DE's

#1 Deacon Jones (Like Bling said, "Either he or LT would have to be considered the greatest defensive player ever regardless of position)

#2 Michael Strahan (I know he's still playing, but this guy is awesome! Modern blocking rules make it harder for d-linemen, but even with that against him, he has more sacks than LT. 7 time pro bowl, 6 time all-pro, and 2 time defensive POY. Strahan holds the single season record for sacks with 22.5 in 2001; also a great run stopper.)

Number 2 was hard; Bruce Smith, Reggie White, Lee Roy Selmon, and Howie Long also are all very worthy.

Again thanks to DKM for this great blog. Everyone be sure to 5 all his posts.

The King's post was, as always, awesome; very informative.

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs DE's

So often, the votes for these tend to be an exercise in looking up applicable stats, and regurgitating names that they've heard on NFL films over the years. For some reason, I feel that this position, even above the skill positions, is one that has seen it's most dominant players in the last several years. Deacon Jones may truly be the exception, but to list players that dominated 260 lb lineman, and chased around 180 lb tailbacks just doesn't seem to resonate with me as truly being worthy of 'Best of all time' status. The combination of strength, speed, agility, and mental awareness it takes to play the position now so far eclipses anything the players of the 70's (or further back) exhibited, it's unrealistic to place them above the players of today. I'm quite sure, I'm making several people angry here, but I can't help it. Take the head-slap away from Deacon Jones, make him beat a 360lb Larry Allen just before he takes on a 240lb back that runs a 4.5, and will he still be the dominant figure that we remember? Better yet, lets GIVE DeMarcus Ware the head-slap, put him up against a sub-300 lb lineman that's slower, smaller, and weaker than he is, and have him chase down a back that PROBABLY couldn't outrun him in a straight 40. Now THAT would be domination. All that being said, my vote for the two best are probably not even going to make the top 20. They certainly weren't top choices on Bling's list that included I think 6 60's era players that wouldn't even be able to stay within 20 yards of the likes of a Barry Sanders, Randall Cunningham, etc. Enough of that:

Michael Strahan and Charles Haley

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs DE's

Deacon Jones dominated the position of DE as LT did the OLB slot. When people mention the amount of sacks they forget that the stat wasn't kept when he played. A review of game films showed he has 75 plus more sacks than anyone who has ever played the game. He would race the rookie wide outs defensive backs and running backs in training camp  until his early 30's and rarely if ever lost a race. Not voting for him is the same as not voting for for LT or Jerry Rice at their spots.

The second slot is much harder to pick. I am sure most of the younger voters will decide between Bruce Smith & Reggie White. The case for Doug Adkins being a candidate has been made by another poster and well stated. And once again the King of Bling has done his usual excellent job of listing the worthy options.

My vote for the second slot goes to Doug Adkins the massive ex Bear.

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs DE's

Wow, this position's so deep with so many GREAT players (and I don't throw that word around lightly)!  Cutting it down to two players is like "Sophie's Choice."  Ultimately, it comes down to who of the following three to leave off: Smith, White or Jones.  Jones played on an amazing defensive line that may have "lightened his load," so:

Reggie White

Bruce Smith

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs DE's

A while back, I saw what I think was a biography by NFL Films about Doug Adkins. This man dominated his era. If you ever get the chance, I would imagine you might find it on UTube, watch it. It will change your perspective about DE's and your vote.

My Votes:

Doug Adkins (surprise!)

Deacon Jones
