The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs DE's

Posted on: April 25, 2008 9:29 am

Ok, here is the deal, every Friday I will post a new Blog in which we will choose the greatest player ever at a certain position. Until the next position is posted CBS members may vote for who they think the greatest ever is, at the end of the voting I will calculate every ones votes and will add that player to The Greatest Team Ever. I hope lots of you participate because I think this could be fun. I will try to post a running tally in a comment every day.

15th Position- Defensive Ends     Vote for the best Defensive Ends of all time!! Please post your vote in a comment, if you wish to give some insight on your choices feel free to do so. Please start your post with the players names, and please make sure that you are naming someone who played the positions being voted on for that week, as those are the only votes that will count..........So who are our Defensive Ends?

Please remember to rate this blog entry, and all comments as I appear to be losing value points for doing this blog, I happen to believe a lot of you enjoy it however, so I will continue even though I may be a rookie by the time it is over!

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs DE's

I will go with

Reggie White - His arm club move knocked everyone on their a$$. See Super Bowl 31 when he keeps plowing over the Patriots offensive lineman.

Charles Haley - This guy was awesome for the Cowboys during the run of Super Bowls in the early 90's.

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs DE's

One factor to consider when you look at DE sack numbers: The game didn't evolve to the wide open passing game of today until the 1980's. The rule changes with regard to bump and run in particular have skewed things a bit. The way you can compare eras however is how did a player stack up against his contemporaries.
Sacks don't tell it all.
IMHO
Thanks again DKM!

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs DE's

DE is somewhat similar to OLB as #2 is really tough to pick.

#1 - Deacon Jones - Either he or LT would have to be considered the greatest defensive player ever,  regardless of position.
#2 - Reggie White - Could do it all. Like a Jekyl and Hyde when you consider he was a preacher off the field.
#3- Bruce Smith - First pick in draft out of VT. His motor never quit running.
#4 - Len Ford - First great DE, starred on many championship Browns teams. He changed the position.
#5 - Lee Roy Selmon - Great Oklahoma bumper sticker read "Thank God for Mrs. Selmon!" First ever pick by Tampa Bay was so quick and agile that he was virtually unblockable.
#6 - Howie Long - I can't imagine Chris will ever be as good as his dad, however, if he is; he would be worth multiple 1st rd. picks.
#7 - Gino Marchetti - Starred for the Baltimore Colts and terrorized QB's his entire career.
#8 - Elvin Bethea - Greatest AFL defensive lineman, played for the Oilers.
#9 - Andy Robustelli - NY Giants HOFer was elite in the 50's.
#10 - Willie Davis - He, along with Henry Jordan, gave Lombardi's Packers two HOF DL.
#11 - Dan Hampton - This Razorback was a great run stuffer as well as heat bringer.
#12 - Michael Strahan - Second greatest NYG DE ever. Class act.
#13 - L.C. Greenwood - Steel Curtain stellar DE. Gold high-tops...you gotta love it!
#14 - Jack Youngblood - Once played for LA Rams in SB with a broken bone in his leg.
#15 - Fred Dean - Starred for SD and SF. Anchored SB DL's for Niners.
#16 - Richard Dent - Pass rushing machine for Da' Bears.
#17 - Carl Eller - Great DE for the Purple People Eaters.
#18 - Harvey Martin - Martinzed opponents and shared a SB MVP trophy w/ Randy White.
#19- Doug Atkins - Mountain of a man, was an all-time great for George Halas in Chicago. Played about 19 years.
#20 - Charles Haley - Underrated, he deserves to be in the HOF.

Others worthy of mention include: Ben Davidson (OAK), Too Tall (DALL), Jim Marshall (MINN), Leonard Marshall (NYG), Claude Humphrey (ATL), Mark Gastineau (NYJ).

I agree with MVKrum.  Reggie White and Bruce Smith get my votes as well.  They were two fearsome defensive ends.  Oh, by the way, DML, love the blog!
