The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs A Tight End

Posted on: May 2, 2008 10:09 am

Ok, here is the deal, every Friday I will post a new Blog in which we will choose the greatest player ever at a certain position. Until the next position is posted CBS members may vote for who they think the greatest ever is, at the end of the voting I will calculate every ones votes and will add that player to The Greatest Team Ever. I hope lots of you participate because I think this could be fun. I will try to post a running tally in a comment every day.

16th Position- Tight End     Vote for the best Tight End of all time!! Please post your vote in a comment, if you wish to give some insight on your choice feel free to do so. Please start your post with the players name, and please make sure that you are naming someone who played the position being voted on for that week, as those are the only votes that will count..........So who is our Tight End?

Please remember to rate this blog entry, and all comments as I appear to be losing value points for doing this blog, I happen to believe a lot of you enjoy it however, so I will continue even though I may be a rookie by the time it is over!

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs A Tight End

Kellen Winslow is my pick for the greatest Tight End of all time.  Charley Sanders and Ozzie Newsome also deserve some consideration.

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs A Tight End

I am going to have to go with Kellen Winslow for the way he changed the role of the tight end. If he could have of stayed healthy he would have been an even more dominating player.

Second Pick would be Shannon Sharpe, helped two great teams in the Broncos and Ravens to get to the Super Bowl.

I'm going with Shannon Sharpe here, too. He is the perfect model for what a tight end should be like.

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs A Tight End

This is the first selection where I had a difficult decision.  Do you select based upon the old run/pass blocking standards of old or do you make your selection based upon the new "giant WR running a crossing route" standard of today?

I'm going to go with Tony Gonzalez of the Chiefs.  Gonzo has set the standard for the modern tight end.  He has made himself an integral part of his team's offense on nearly all plays - passing or blocking.

Serious tip o' the HOF cap to Kellen Winslow, Mike Ditka, and the award namesake John Mackey.

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs A Tight End

I'm going with John Mackey.  I'm not old enough to have seen him play, but I've read a lot about him and I've seen great stuff from NFL films.

Honorable mentions goes to Kellen Winslow Sr. and  Ozzie Newsome (players I actually got to see).

Of current players, Tony Gonzalez is outstanding and will one day make it to Canton.
