The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs A Tight End

Posted on: May 2, 2008 10:09 am

Ok, here is the deal, every Friday I will post a new Blog in which we will choose the greatest player ever at a certain position. Until the next position is posted CBS members may vote for who they think the greatest ever is, at the end of the voting I will calculate every ones votes and will add that player to The Greatest Team Ever. I hope lots of you participate because I think this could be fun. I will try to post a running tally in a comment every day.

16th Position- Tight End     Vote for the best Tight End of all time!! Please post your vote in a comment, if you wish to give some insight on your choice feel free to do so. Please start your post with the players name, and please make sure that you are naming someone who played the position being voted on for that week, as those are the only votes that will count..........So who is our Tight End?

Please remember to rate this blog entry, and all comments as I appear to be losing value points for doing this blog, I happen to believe a lot of you enjoy it however, so I will continue even though I may be a rookie by the time it is over!

Bling always does his homework.

My pick is Mike Ditka.  Loved this guy until the ED ads.

I'll go with John Mackey --- he was a force averaging nearly 16 yards a catch in his career. And to anticipate a theme that has developed in recent weeks here by my younger friends, yes, if he had played in this era he would have been great as well.

While I despise his position on race and sports, I can't deny the amazing talents of Kellen Winslow Sr.  His son is a loud-mouth clown with more talent in his finger than most every current TE, he has a ten-cent head.  His dad was incredible.

Jackie Smith, Dave Casper, Jay Novacek, Shannon Sharpe, Tony Gonzalez, Brent Jones, & Ozzie Newsome can all be in the conversation, though.

Kellen Winslow.  Changed the position and made everyone pay attention to the position.  Prior to him only a few teams even utilized the TE for anything other than blocking.  Today you can name almost everyone's TE and they are big parts of the offense.  The playoff performance was unbelievable as mentioned before.

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs A Tight End

Every week, another tough choice. It came down to Mackey and Winslow for me. Both redefined the position.

I'm going with Mackey. I think he was the better blocker of the two, making him the complete package. If they name an award after you, you're probably pretty good (feel the sarcasm!).

Honorable mention: Iron Mike, Sharpe, Casper, Gonzo.

Be watching out for Jacob Tamme, drafted out of the University of Kentucky and my hometown Danville (Boyle County) in the 4th round by the Indianapolis Colts. He's not much of a blocker yet, but this boy has some of the best hands I've ever seen. I hope to one day see his name on a list such as this. But even if I don't, he's done our town and UK proud.

Disregard any tight end without two or more super bowl rings. That makes the choices very clear.
