The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs A RB

Posted on: May 16, 2008 12:37 pm

Ok, here is the deal, every Friday I will post a new Blog in which we will choose the greatest player ever at a certain position. Until the next position is posted CBS members may vote for who they think the greatest ever is, at the end of the voting I will calculate every ones votes and will add that player to The Greatest Team Ever. I hope lots of you participate because I think this could be fun. I will try to post a running tally in a comment every day.

18th Position- Running Back    Vote for the best Running Back of all time!! Please post your vote in a comment, if you wish to give some insight on your choice feel free to do so. Please start your post with the players name, and please make sure that you are naming someone who played the position being voted on for that week, as those are the only votes that will count..........So who is our Running Back?

Please remember to rate this blog entry, and all comments as I appear to be losing value points for doing this blog, I happen to believe a lot of you enjoy it however, so I will continue even though I may be a rookie by the time it is over!

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs A RB

Gale Sayers this guy could of had every record if he played long enough. The fact that he played the least seasons of anyone in the NFL HOF. He broke scoring records as a rookie, also he was what you want every athlete to be, unselfish. The fact that he accepted less money to play for the Bears also brings great joy to me.

This is a no-brainer.

Barry Sanders was the best RB ever.

#2 Walter Payton

#3 Emmitt Smith

#4 OJ Simpson

#5 LaDainian Tomlinson

LT is the only one with the potential to come close to Sanders level and even that may be wishful thinking. Barry was the Lions. When he left they were done. He was the only reason to watch to Detroit. He could have set the rushing record way out of Smith's reach. I remember reading some articles saying that he retired out of respect for Jim Brown and Walter Payton, but it may also have helped that he was taking a beating week after week with the Lions. Sweetness was the ultimate team player - the best way to pay homage to him is to recognize the team player that he was. He didn't score in SB XX because he was a decoy for William Perry.  Emmitt was Mr. Consistency. OJ may be a killer but he was the first to top 2000 and he changed the NFL when he did it. LT is awesome to watch, I just hope that he can make a full recovery.

I have to go with Walter Payton. He had it all...speed, agility, awareness, and strength (beautiful stiff arm). Payton could also catch balls out of the backfield too.

You want the best all-around football player on your greatest of all time?  Then Walter "Sweetness" Payton is your man.  There were some who were faster, more elusive, more powerful, etc.  But when you put it all together -  speed, elusiveness, toughness, pass catching, blocking, passing, spirit, and leadership in one player, it has to be Walter Payton.

I have to go with Walter Payton.

Barry Sanders was unbelievable and fun to watch like Gale Sayers, but Sweetness did everything, had the biggest heart, and was a great team player.

You should just put Sanders and Payton at RB because in this era everyone is having 2 RBs and not one full-time starter. You could line Payton up at FB sometimes and have Brown and Sanders in the backfield them 3 would win the game for you alone without an O-line or a QB.

Earl Campbell is the man!

While I agree that Barry Sander could juke you out of socks while playing for many years on horrible Lions teams and Sweetness was the most fluid runner I have ever seen, Earl Campbell would pound the ball down after down and beat you into submission.    I have never seen anyone comparable to Campbell's combination of size, speed, and power.  Every person who loves smashmouth football would LOVE Earl Campbell  (Except maybe the D linemen, Linebackers. and DB's he ran over.)

I'm with you on Barry Sanders.  I have to wonder what his numbers would look like if he'd been on a GOOD team and they'd lured him into sticking around for another 4 or 5 seasons.  Emmit Smith and Walter Payton sure are excellent choices as well, but Sanders is the clear # 1 in my eyes.

Can I comment on one thing though?  Adam Vinateiri as the best ever kicker is not the reality.  He has thos egame winning kicks, but that's more on the rest of the Patriots for putting him in those situations.  Sure he was very good, but a lot of guys would've made those kicks if they had the opportunity.  I mean, he missed two in the Super Bowl against the Panthers, but they only remember the on he made at the end.
