Posted on: May 16, 2008 12:37 pm

Ok, here is the deal, every Friday I will post a new Blog in which we will choose the greatest player ever at a certain position. Until the next position is posted CBS members may vote for who they think the greatest ever is, at the end of the voting I will calculate every ones votes and will add that player to The Greatest Team Ever. I hope lots of you participate because I think this could be fun. I will try to post a running tally in a comment every day.

18th Position- Running Back    Vote for the best Running Back of all time!! Please post your vote in a comment, if you wish to give some insight on your choice feel free to do so. Please start your post with the players name, and please make sure that you are naming someone who played the position being voted on for that week, as those are the only votes that will count..........So who is our Running Back?

Please remember to rate this blog entry, and all comments as I appear to be losing value points for doing this blog, I happen to believe a lot of you enjoy it however, so I will continue even though I may be a rookie by the time it is over!

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs A RB

Again I go with Barry "The Water Bug" Sanders, and as many have said in this very Blog, since DKM started RB's, Barry may have put the QB's in tough 3rd and longs due to his losses, however, if you'd ask those QB's or any other QB, if they would have wanted Barry Sanders in their backfield, I feel overwelmingly, that the vast majority would take Barry Sanders as their RB.  I do know that their are a lot of Defensive players that wished he was on thier team, lol....Also, had he had the line Emmitt had or Harris had for just a few examples, I feel he wouldn't have had as many of  those carries for losses and we'd be having a totally different discussion in here today.

All that said, drink this thought in.... Babe Ruth, leads the majors in strikouts, and with 714 HR's, people call him a LEGEND.
Same is and will be said about, Barry Sanders, he leads the NFL in most yards lost, and just imagine, had he had a line, again I say, Barry, wouldn't have had all those losses and would have surpassed Sweetness in total yards and I feel Emmitt would have ended his career before he went to AZ and finished second, to no other than, #20, HoF running back, HoF great person / role model,  Barry "The Water Bug" Sanders...

Barry, if you ever read this, Thank You, Thank You for all the nail biting, edge of the seat Thanksgivings, games, highlights and most of all, all the memories.  May GOD continue to Bless You.

My vote goes to "Sweetness", with Sanders and Dickerson right behind.

Evidently (respectfully) many of our posters never saw WP play. He was Mr. Excitment, Mr.Stiff Arm  Mr Swing Pass out of the backfield,

Mr Knock you on your butt RB,Mr StudderStep.

He was a classy TEAM player who played every aspect of the game!

I agree Barry Sanders had some draw backs, such as losing yardage occasionaly or not being able to get the short yardage first down. However, wasn't his career yards per carry average somewhere around 4.8-5.0? That means he gained a lot more than he lost. And he did it on a team that had no offensive line his entire career. Maybe I should say his offensive line was offensive. What gets him my vote was his pure athletic ability. That man made moves that were against the laws of physics! I too, was disappointed in the way he left the game. I'm sure that if he had stayed one or two more years he would have broken records that would never be beat. Walter Payton was a tremendous running back, but Barry gets my vote for the greatest in his time.

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs A RB

I think one of the reason Barry would run in this 'style' was that he was trying to win games on an otherwise pathetic offense for most of his career.   Detroit used to just feed him the ball, hoping for him ot bust a big one to get the game back or make the defense affraid of Barry breaking one ... in other words, he'd run differently on a better team.

All things considered, BARRY SANDERS is the choice here.    He had everything, and he was durable, and he was a great guy.  ALl his teammates spoke of his integrity and discipline.

Howver ... a personal choice would be EARL CAMPBELL.  He was a human wrecking machine with the rock.

Sentimental fav is always going to be Waltyer Payton ... but if its draft day and all were rookies, I'd take BARRY SANDERS.

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs A RB

Without a doubt, #20 Barry Sanders! The most electrifying Running Back to ever play the game. Not only was he one of the most elusive backs of all times, but he was an island on his team year after year. Walter Payton would be 2nd on my list of greatest RBs of all time.
