Posted on: May 16, 2008 12:37 pm

Ok, here is the deal, every Friday I will post a new Blog in which we will choose the greatest player ever at a certain position. Until the next position is posted CBS members may vote for who they think the greatest ever is, at the end of the voting I will calculate every ones votes and will add that player to The Greatest Team Ever. I hope lots of you participate because I think this could be fun. I will try to post a running tally in a comment every day.

18th Position- Running Back    Vote for the best Running Back of all time!! Please post your vote in a comment, if you wish to give some insight on your choice feel free to do so. Please start your post with the players name, and please make sure that you are naming someone who played the position being voted on for that week, as those are the only votes that will count..........So who is our Running Back?

Please remember to rate this blog entry, and all comments as I appear to be losing value points for doing this blog, I happen to believe a lot of you enjoy it however, so I will continue even though I may be a rookie by the time it is over!

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs A RB

Admittedly, I have not read all the posts on this thread. But, of what I did read, I gotta say I'm surprised no one mentioned Marshall Faulk in their top 5 or 10 RBs of all-time. Maybe he didn't do it long enough? Maybe it's be/c he was part of that "fun and gun" Mike Martz O?

Walter Payton.

The total package. Could run around or through anyone. He unfortunately played the bulk of his prime on bad Bears teams.

Barry Sanders? A great talent, but, please, he's not even in my top 3. The guy was talented, but disappeared in the playoffs and big regular-season games. Not a guy who was guaranteed to get 3 yards on a 3rd and 2. That's the mark of a great RB in my opinion. Fun as hell to watch, but I'm taking Sweetness every time if I had to pick between the two.

My top 3, for what it's worth, and I'm an Eagles fan, so this hurts.

1. Payton

2. Emmitt

3. Dorsett

Barry Sanders by a sliver.  Walter Payton did more things than Barry .  Sanders on that artificial turf was just not fair.  O.J. should get some consideration.  He was a dominant runner before he was a murderer.

I agree with you. Sanders is also my choice. That guy ran behind nobody and still could have shattered records.  He had a terrible team. I was amazed how many defenders used to say that he was the only guy that when you went to tackle. Your eyes naturally close a milli second before impact and Sander is the only guy defenders would close their eyes for impact and end up not even touching him. thats crazy to think about.  Sanders was a beast. He also ran for a record 14 games in a row over 100 yards. wow am a Rams fan and I d love to say Eric Dickerson. <<he still holds the single season rushing record. He also averaged 5. 6 yards a carry. and he tied Barry for leading the league in rushing 4 years.  Still gotta say Barry though

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs A RB

Well the best running back of my lifetime is no doubt Barry Sanders.  I wasnt around to see Jim Brown Or Gale Sayers so I dont want to offend fans of those guys.  But I think Sanders was head and shoulders abov everyone from his era.  Emmit was so overrated in my opinion and if Barry would have stuck around Smith wouldnt have even sniffed the record. Its just too bad Barry had to play for such a pathetic franchise.  Im a lions fan but hate the ownership and management.  If they could get a new ownership group they might have a chance someday.

The best is defainatley Walter Payton. Sweetness. He was awsome no1 could get him down. They usually had to blow the wistle to end the play. He slipped through the players so good. I don't know why he wouldnt win

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs A RB

I've been reading a lot of your post on this subject.  When you people say Barry Sanders ran behind a bad line did you forget A guy named Lomas Brown ( pro bowler 1990-1995 DET ) or Kevin Glover ( 1995-1997 DET ) those were some good lines. Not to mention a lot of people Barry made look bad with his great moves were his own line.  They never knew where he was going to run after he bounced out then in on a run. They only knew where he was going to hit the hole.  I remember one game aginst the 49ers in 1995 where Barry had 17 carries for 21 yds 1.4 avg but I guess we all have bad days.  I do like Barry but I don't think he had a complete game as Walter.

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs A RB

My choice for greatest RB of all time is Walter Payton. If there was a RB who was the total package, it was Sweetness. He could juke past you, spin around you, jump over you, or run you over like an 18 wheeler into a bicycle. Payton would never look for the sidelines to get out of bounds. He had such a passion for the game and played every play like the game was on the line. The only blemish on his career was that he didn't get a TD in Super Bowl XX (Thanks to Ditka giving that fat slob Perry the TD carry instead). He was flawless. Not a bad thing I can say about him. He is the greatest.

No doubt in my mind but SWEETNESS was the greatest RB in history! Walter Peyton was amazing on the field and off of it. There is a reason the NFL hands out the "Walter Peyton Man of the Year Award".  Barry was great but I feel Walter was better. Some people that say they never saw him play should really go back and look at some of his highlights they will make your head spin. Hell he only missed 1 game in a 13 year career! How many RBs can say that.
