The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs A QB

Posted on: May 23, 2008 11:41 am

Ok, here is the deal, every Friday I will post a new Blog in which we will choose the greatest player ever at a certain position. Until the next position is posted CBS members may vote for who they think the greatest ever is, at the end of the voting I will calculate every ones votes and will add that player to The Greatest Team Ever. I hope lots of you participate because I think this could be fun. I will try to post a running tally in a comment every day.

19th Position- Quarter Back    Vote for the best Quarter Back of all time!! Please post your vote in a comment, if you wish to give some insight on your choice feel free to do so. Please start your post with the players name, and please make sure that you are naming someone who played the position being voted on for that week, as those are the only votes that will count..........So who is our Quarter Back?

Please remember to rate this blog entry, and all comments as I appear to be losing value points for doing this blog, I happen to believe a lot of you enjoy it however, so I will continue even though I may be a rookie by the time it is over!

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs A QB

Elway, hands down.

We all saw Elway win with bad teams and good teams.  Manning and Montana have only proven to win with good teams.

I would love to say Roger Staubach or Troy Aikman, but as bad as I hated him Joe Montana was probably the best.

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs A QB

How do you define the greatest QB of all time?
Stats aside, who would I want with the ball to win me a game for the greatest team ... bar none Joe Montana
Who better to have under center with the greatest collective of talent in the history of the NFL, he won't be phased by the names.
YES he did have Craig, Rice, Rathman & Taylor but he was the glue that guided and managed that DYNASTY

I give you Elway, Young, Bradshaw & Marino had more physical tools, arm or legs but Joe simply did one thing better day one, prepared and studied for the game and won.  In Notre Dame, in San Francisco and did you not remember the Kansas City game against John Elway?

Not the biggest arm ... not the fast QB ... but one I gladly hand the ball over every time
If the position of QB is more cerebral position on the football field, I'll take Joe Montana by a long shot

I have to go with Elway, He took 3 teams to the Super Bowl that really had no business being there otherwise.  When he finally had a team around him he won.  If he played with the talent the 49ers had throughout his career he would have won many more.

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs A QB

It's hard for me to say this but, John Elway.

Back when the Seahawks shared a division with the Denver Broncos, I used to despise Elway.  This man would never go away.  The Broncos were never out of a game, because you knew anything could happen when Elway got back on the field.  Bottom line is, my hate for Elway at the time was because he was SO GOOD.  Now that the Seahawks have moved and I my hatred for the Broncos has dwindled, I can look back and just shake my head at some of the things I watched that man accomplish.  Everyone mentioned on this post was and is a valid candidate for the GREATEST QB OF ALL TIME, but I've just never seen a man more feared by the competition than John Elway.

The Greatest Of All Time Team Needs A QB

Before I even get started, I would like to thank DKM for putting together this blog.  You did a fantastic job on this.  As a general rule, you were able to attract very knowledgable input, from a really great group of posters.  I, for one, look forward to your next blog.  Now, on to the vote.

I am going to break away from some of the conventional wisdom that says I should go with Montana, Elway, Marino, or Young.   I'm going with 6 time Pro Bowler Roger Staubach.  Though Staubach may not measure up in terms of career stats, He does measure up in playoff and Super Bowl appearances.  You also need to keep in mind that Staubach lost 4 years of playing time due to his Naval service and he did not take over as a starter until 1971, at about age 28 or 29. (he was drafted in 1964).  So, I would argue that if you compare the 8 years he spent as a starter to the numbers put up by the other players, that I mentioned above, for the same period of time.

Roger Staubach gets the nod.
