Where did all the classic cartoons go?

Watching television with Lauren has got me thinking, where have all the cool cartoons of my childhood gone?  I remember the Saturday mornings filled with Laff-a-lympics, and Captain Caveman.  Now I am surrounded by Max and Ruby and Lazy town.  I will admit I do like The Backyardigans.

If you watch very much Go Diego Go you would come to think the Puma is the most dangerous animal in the rainforest.  Is it just me or does Dora have a freakishly large head.

I miss Scooby-Doo, even if they did run past the same painting 30-40 times an episode.

Where did all the classic cartoons go?

It's not only cartoons that have changed.  Situation Comedy on TV use to be fun for the sake of fun.  Almost silly.  Beverly Hillbilies, Green Acres, Andy Griffith, BeWitched.  Possibly All in the Family began the change to the modern situation comedy, although that was a great show.  In the old days, having a one-liner every minute wasn't an important part of situation comedy like it is today.  It was more funny situations, almost fantasy, a story was told.  Today, they try to portray more realistic situations, like single moms raising kids or dysfunctional families with hot daughters and they all have sexy one-liners.

Frankly, I think cartoons of today are going the same way as the Sit Coms.  And it's not for the better.

Where did all the classic cartoons go?

I get to watch the Disney Channel all morning too!  I used to be an intelligent adult but now I talk to the TV.  I don't remember the old cartoons using audience participation.  If Dora ever turned around maybe she could figure out which tree is shaped like a square all by herself!!

I have to say by far the best cartoon is Little Einsteins.  My two year old loves that show and he really is starting to pick up the music and art it teaches.  I'm not sure if I like that he knows the difference between Monet and Van Gogh but he does.

FYI- The Smurfs turned 50 today even though they only came to the US in the 80's.  Scary huh?!?

Where did all the classic cartoons go?

Yes, Land of the lost was a true classic, low budget and emmy worthy acting. It was an absolute buffet of turn off your brain and enjoy the show. I remember my big brother hiding under the couch while Miss Julie was looking thru the 'magic mirror', I had forgotten about that part, too funny! And the snack prayer, someone post it and we'll see if you can get it right! My most recent favorite was the Rugrats, I used to watch it with my two girls, now teenagers, and laugh harder than they did at all the clean but adult humor.

Where did all the classic cartoons go?

H.R. Puff-N-Stuff was great but do you remember Land of The Lost ?  The dinosaurs effects were awful and the paper mache boulders were hysterical but I watched every week.  What about Shazam or Isis?

I love Electric company. Morgan Freeman was one smooth operator.  I was alway a fan of Sesame street when the Snuffleupagus was on.  Now the street is all Elmo and friends.  Creepiest part of Romper Room was the I see Susuie and Bobby etc. (I actually thought she could see me)

Where did all the classic cartoons go?

O.k. now that the "I think my childhood t.v. memories are older than yours" gauntlet has been thrown down!

Classic T.V.: Gumby and Pokey, Sigmund and the Seamonster, The Electric Company, and H.R. Puff-n-Stuff!!

Do you remember H.R. Puff, wholly defecation Batman, how did the FCC not know that show was obviously about a teenager punk token on a jade and getting transported to his "own" little world. Are you joking, can you believe that was allowed to air.

Others Romper Room, Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, the older I got the creepier that dude became. Anyway great blog.

I have to agree about Scooby-Doo, that was the first t.v. program where I remember physically pushing the suspension of disbelief button.

Where did all the classic cartoons go?

Classic toons are on Boomerang or something like that. The grandkids come over and that's the channel I always put them on. They don't have them all, but they do have Johnny Quest, Scooby and others. Boy it takes me back.
