Warped Gaborik Trade Scenarios that Sound Sane

Posted on: October 22, 2008 11:20 am

If the Pioneer Press reports of Gabby and/or his agent turning down $10M guaranteed for 8 or 9 years are true, it's painfully obvious that he no longer wants to play for the Wild.  With that in mind, here are a couple of deals that Warpy would put on the table as GM:

1.  Marian Gaborik, Martin Skoula and a #1 round draft pick (or Houston goalie Barry Brust and a #2 pick) to the L.A. Kings for Anze Kopitar and Patrick O'Sullivan.  Gabby for Kopitar straight up wouldn't be all that bad either, though it would certainly favor the Kings, but if the Wild throw in the other goodies mentioned above, both teams would get more than they're giving up, and we'd be able to unload Skoula in the bargain.

2.  A three-way trade with the Boston Bruins and Buffalo Sabres (I had to work that in after seeing the BOS-BUF tilt last night).  The Wild would give up Gaborik, Skoula, a #2 round pick and Brust, and receive Phil Kessel from Boston and Thomas Vanek from Buffalo.  At first glance, that may sound like a lot to give up for two former Gophers, but if Gabby is done wanting to play here, then in reality we're not giving up all that much in order to get two proven goal scorers (not to mention the marketing coup of having ex-Gophers play for the Wild)

Boston would receive Gaborik and Brust, while giving up Kessel and a #1 round pick.  Not a bad deal for them: they not only get Gabby, but also a backup goalie whose game will probably be good enough to be a starter by the time Manny Fernandez hangs 'em up.

Buffalo gives up Vanek, and receives the #1 round pick that Boston gives up above, the #2 round pick from Minnesota, and Skoula.  Considering the quality of players who went for #2 round picks before the trade deadline last year, getting a #1 and a #2 pick for Vanek almost sounds like stealing from the Sabres' standpoint.  If Buffalo balks at that, I'd even be willing to upgrade the Wild #2 pick to a #1 pick, giving the Sabres two first rounders for Vanek (with Skoula thrown in for good measure:)  Given the Wild's recent drafts (one thing Doug Risebrough and company have done extremely well) we can afford to live without a first rounder next year if Kessel and Vanek are on the roster.

Sounds like a great deal all around, eh?  As always, GO WILD!!!

I don't know how Vanek's name has gotten thrown in the ring with a three way trade including Boston and Minnesota.  First off, the Sabres are in the middle of a playoff run, and although they may not be the richest team in the league, they have a young talent in Vanek, signed long term for a relatively cheap price.  Secondly, the Sabres won't trade any marque player to a team in the east, let alone one of their biggest division rivals.  Gaborik, will likely go at the deadline to a Eastren Conference team with a little money on their side trying to make a cup run, I.E. the Candiens, Devils, Flyers, or Rangers.  But it is too soon to tell, we will find out.  I can say the Sabres will most likely not be involved with any big name trades, that is just history, and Darcy Reiger.

Haha I was hoping you'd take WHitney. wildwanye hit it right on the head with him, huge underachiever. Malkin for Gabby and a First and Second Round pick is reasonable, but now that I think about it the Pens won't trade Geno (Malkin) because they just signed him to an extension. Staal is the ultimate trade bait.

Jordan Staal is OK, but it would have to be a lot players packaged together for this one to work.

Whitney no thanks.  Underacheiver or overrated.

Satan and Fedetenko I would only trade Skoala for those guys.

Malkin for Gabby and a First and Second Round pick.  Now both teams can live with that one.

I've heard the Penguins were interested in getting at Gaborik, so don't be suprised if you hear any of the following names in exchange for Gaborik. Not necessarily straight up for Gaborik, but all of these guys could end up on the Wild.

Jordan Staal- big contract year

Ryan Whitney- top talent huge underacheiver

Miroslav Satan- contract year

Ruslan Fedetenko- ditto Satan

Sidney Crosby- haha made you look

I like the Montreal idea.  Wild fans would probably be happy with any two of the following three:  Saku Koivu, Alex Tanguay, Alexei Kovalev.

The Wild would lose a proven 40 goal and potential 100 point scorer, but would get two reliable scorers to create a good second line, and the Canadiens would get Gabby to light the lamp for them.  We could even throw Skooly in as a pot sweetener to see how he does in the bleu, blanc et rouge.

I think if the wild get kessel part of the deal, they would be thrilled.  Especially because it would easy up on the media backlash from the wild getting rid of Gabby.   The rest of the trade proposal are far fetched.  LA would be awesome to get Kopitar, but no way would they get rid of him.  I could see Dustin Brown packaged in a deal.  Buffalo would never do this deal, nor would Gabby every agree to a long term deal with them.  Montreal may happen, but I can tell you this.  Wild fans will not be happy.  Montreal as a team are nice, but just have no headliner names that would make this deal good.  Boston is it.

Yo foolio, what kind of deranged mind picks all the other Minnesota teams as "favorites" but goes with the San Jose freaking Sharks for choice of hockey team?!  Dang, I thought my mind was warped, but this takes the cake.

Seriously, tho, welcome to Sportsline.  You're right about Minny being a good farm team for Boston in the other sports, so Gabby would probably catch fire there.  How 'bout Gaborik and Skoula for Bergeron and Kessel?

If you live in Minnesota you know all of our fanchise players in the big three sports have ended up in boston which made that club awesome.  KG to Boston via trade, Moss to the Pats finds round about way to Boston, David Ortiz sign for nothing after Twins give up on him.  So Minnesota is down to one more team, the Wild.  Next which player makes sense.  Jacque loves the french canadian players, plus with salary cap issues for a team it is tough fitting Gabbys 7.5 million in the cap.  So you look at Boston for a french canadian player who has some upside, plus makes good money.  Verdict is the central part of a trade will be Gabby for Patrice Bergeron.  Go LN.

Yeah, but #1 draft picks have an inherent risk involved, whereas Skoula is a proven commodity, fool.  I'd throw in Kim Johnsson, but that'd probably mess up the Sabres cap situation (not to mention make your team worse, which we wouldn't want, eh?:)

Those Sabres look like a mighty good team this year.  I'm glad they aren't in our division, that's for sure.  My only beef with them is the abomination of a new logo, which makes 'em look like Nashville Predator wannabes.  The old bison with the crossed swords was a thing of beauty; I dunno why they moved that from the players' sweaters to center ice.

Did you hit your head?  That trade is ridiculous.  Great for Minny, getting Vanek and Kessel as well as for Boston, getting Gabby, but, why in the world would Buffalo make that trade?  They have a good team now, turned down 4 #1 picks last year from Edmonton for Vanek, so they trade him for 2 #1s and Skoula?  Your dreaming, they would disown Darcy Reiger if he thought about that trade. I wouldnt even make it if Gabby ended up in Buffalo instead of Boston. He is very good player, but oft injured.  Keep dreaming!
