Who is the all-time best driver

Posted on: September 15, 2008 1:02 pm

Everyone has their favorite driver, and think that he is the best ever. Hard to argue against Richard Petty with 200 wins, but then again he raced 2-3 times a week. Dale Earnhardt deserves some consideration after winning 7 championships. What about David Pearson with 105 wins and 3 championships, or Darrel Waltrip. I know many fans nowadays will make the arguement for Jeff Gordon. This little contest won't really settle the debate but it should be interesting to see who the CBS Sportsline community thinks is the best of all times.

The really hard part was to come up with seedings that were fair. Do I base it solely on races won? What about winning a championship, shouldn't that be taken into consideration. How about if a guy was a runner up to the champion. He still had a great season but someone just beat him. I figured I would take all of that into consideration as well. I went to Jayski and pulled up the All-time win list. It got interesting down near the 64th spot. The drivers in places 61-64 all had 7 wins, and the 65th spot had 5, so it made the cutoff seem easy. Or so I though. As I looked a little further, I noticed Alan Kulwicki had only 5 wins but also had a championship. Do I leave him off the list? To decide that I added him, so I had 65 drivers vying for 64 spots. I gave each driver a point for winning a race. I also awarded 2 points for every championship won, and 1 point for each runner up spot. Of course this didn't make my decision for the 64th spot any easier since Alan now had 7 points and so did 4 other drivers. Well someone had to be left off but who? I decided to keep Alan because I think he would have won more races had he not died. The other drivers were Marshall Teague, A.J. Foyt, Darel Dieringer, and Jim Reed. I have heard of Marshall Teague and AJ Foyt, so I thought I would find out more about the other two. Darel Dieringer drove in 181 races and won 7 times, Jim Reed raced in 107 races and won 7 times. Since Reed had a better win percentage I included him, sorry to all of the Darel Dieringer fans.

So now it is up to you guys. Who is the best all-time? I will vote only in the event of a tie, polls close at 8ish Monday morning.

Who is the all-time best driver

I'm not exactly sure, but I think we can probably rule out Robbie Gordon. Now, if you start a worst all time driver list .........................

Who is the all-time best driver

Ok, Section I read your post that said it should be kept to NASCAR so my AJ Foyt dilhema is solved. I assumed that was the case but you know what happens when you assume something!

Group 1
#1 Richard Petty vs. #16 Darel Dieringer
#2 Cale Yarborough vs. #15 Paul Goldsmith
#3 Rusty Wallace vs. #14 Kevin Harvick
#4 Junior Johnson vs. #13 Dick Rathmann
#5 Bobby Isaac vs. #12 Dick Hutcherson

#3 Ned Jarrett vs. #14 Donnie Allison

#6 Rex White vs. #11 Marvin Panch
#7 Jim Paschal
vs. #10 Matt Kenseth
#8 Jack Smith vs. #9 Davey Allison

Group 3

#1 Darrell Waltrip vs. #16 Alan Kulwicki
#2 Jeff Gordon vs. #15 Bob Welborn
#3 Herb Thomas vs. #14 Sterling Marlin
#4 Tim Flock vs. #13 Greg Biffle
#5 Tony Stewart vs. #12 Carl Edwards
#6 Joe Weatherly vs. #11 Curtis Turner
#7 Ricky Rudd vs. #10 Geoffrey Bodine
#8 Jeff Burton
vs. #9 Buddy Baker

Group 4

#1 Dale Earnhardt vs. #16 Marshall Teague
#2 Lee Petty vs. #15 Kyle Petty
#3 Buck Baker vs. #14 Cotton Owens
#4 Jimmie Johnson vs. #13 Kyle Busch
#5 Dale Jarrett vs. #12 Ryan Newman
#6 Fred Lorenzen vs. #11 Ernie Irvan
#7 Bobby Labonte
vs. #10 Neil Bonnett
#8 Speedy Thompson vs. #9 Fonty Flock

Kyle Busch has the potenial but I had to give Jimmie the nod at this time. Using that reasoning I probably should have given Bill Elliott the nod over Tim Richmond but I didn't. I gave the home town edge to Matt Kenseth over Jim Paschal plus the fact that I've seen him drive over the years. I really hated to not vote for another Wisconsin great in Alan Kulwicki but even if I wasn't a DW fan he has the portfolio to back it up. As I said earlier there are a lot of tough picks and AJ Foyt made my top 5 list of all time but not in NASCAR. Thanks for taking the time to do this...bluejay

Who is the all-time best driver

Broncalanch - I agree that it would be interesting to see how today's drivers would fair back in the old days. But I also wonder, would some of the older drivers be as succesful in today's NASCAR as they were in there own time? Personally, I think if you are a great driver like Richard, Dale, even Jeff, you would be successful in any era. That is just my opinion though, I know some feel that Gordon wouldn't have done well back in the day, but I think they underestimate him a bit. How would Petty do if he was facing the competition today as opposed to having to outrace maybe 4-5 other drivers? This exercise probably won't answer that question, but it will be interesting to see the results.

Oh, by the way, if you haven't voted, please do. I think we have over 30 comments on this blog, but only 13 people have voted.

This is a grat poll and excellent idea Section. The hardest part is trying to compare drivers from such different eras where the driving was different, the competition was much different and the cars were completely different. I must say that the fights were a whole lot better back in the day, but that is a whole other story. I would love to throw the drivers of yester year, in their primes, into today's cars and see what would happen. I have a feeling that a lot of todays drivers would be schooled fairly quickly, but I digress.  Nice job Section, keep up the good work!

Who is the all-time best driver

I just want to weigh in here on the Earnhardt vs. Petty arguement. If you did put Dale in Petty's era, I'm not so sure it would be a guarantee Earnhardt having more success. Keep in mind those old cars were rolling tanks, which would help with Earnhardt's 'dirty' style of driving, but it took a lot more 'umph in man to turn those cars and hang onto them. That's why guys like Jeff Gordon would be a hazard in a 60s and 70s style car he would not be able to drive it, the cars today and even in Dale's prime, are expontentially easier to drive without flaw.
