Onto Round 3. Minor upset in Round 2 with Rusty Wallace losing out to Fireball Roberts in a 9-7 win. Some good matchups this week, Cal Yarborough vs. Junior Johnson, Boby Allison vs. Ned Jarrett, Jeff Gordon vs Herb Thomas, and Lee Petty vs Buck Baker. I think the #1's will all advance, do any of the 2 seeds fall?

Group 1

#1 Richard Petty vs. #6 Fireball Roberts
#2 Cale Yarborough vs. #4 Junior Johnson

Group 2

#1 David Pearson vs. #4 Bill Elliott
#2 Bobby Allison vs. #3 Ned Jarrett

Group 3

#1 Darrell Waltrip vs. #4 Tim Flock
#2 Jeff Gordon vs. #3 Herb Thomas

Group 4

#1 Dale Earnhardt vs. #4 Jimmie Johnson
#2 Lee Petty vs. #3 Buck Baker

Who is the all-time best driver. Round 3

Frady, I went through the same thought process myself.  Jimmie's accomplishments are drastically overlooked as he is far and away better that anyone since he arrived on the scene.  He buries everyone in a driver vs. driver analysis.  I recall someone (ESPN, Sports Illustrated, ???) putting together the 100 greatest athletes of the 20th Century.  My sister was incensed that Tiger Woods did not make the list.  At the time he hadn't done it long enough.  If the poll was taken today for the last 108 years he would be in the Top 10.

Your numbers point out how dominant Jimmie has been and may deserve a vote over Sr. some day.  Your points are valid and it is just too bad that it had to happen on Senior Worshiper Section's blog.

I know people are going to call em crazy for picking Johnson over Sr but honestly I feel Johnson a better driver. I know probably all will disagree and even some might agree  and still vote for Sr just because of who he is. Let look at some numbers.

Johnson has run 248 races. He won 38 of them for 15.32%, has 98 top 5's which is 39.5%, 151 top 10's which is 60.8%. He has 2 championships working on a third in just his 7th season and has finished in the top 5 final points standings every year since joing the Cup Series.

Yes Sr is Sr one of the all time best but even Sr numbers are not as impressive.

Just counting seasons Sr ran full time Sr ran 666 races. He won 76 of them which is just 11.41%. He had 281 top 5's which is 42.19% and has 428 top 10's which is 64.26%. Yes Sr has a little better top 5 and top 10 percentage but Johnson has a much better win percentage.

At Johnson pace it will take him 14 seasons to win 76 races. That 9 less season then it took Sr. And as far as Championships go. I feel Johnson will pass both Sr and Petty before he retires. I see Johnson finishing second all time in the wins behind Petty.

That my piece. Not trying to sway anyone. No disrespect to Sr just wanted the numbers out there.

I think I know how most will vote, but everyone needs to ask themselves a question 50 years from now who is going to be talked about when people talk about NASCAR past.  Just look at Baseball, It's not AAron, Mays, Bonds etc. You compare everyone in baseball to Babe Ruth.  Who will the NASCAR fans be comparing the future drivers to?
