Time for round 4. This round should be difficult to predict winners in since all 4 groups have the 1 seed going against the 2 seed. I would have thought a 3 or 4 seed could have snuck through into this round, now the big question is, can any of teh 2 seeds upset the 1 seeds?

Group 1

#1 Richard Petty vs. #2 Cale Yarborough

Group 2

#1 David Pearson vs. #2 Bobby Allison

Group 3

#1 Darrell Waltrip vs. #2 Jeff Gordon

Group 4

#1 Dale Earnhardt vs. #2 Lee Petty

Feel free to check out the other rounds if you missed them. You can still post you choices if you like, although it won't change the results. It would be interesting to see how others view the matchups.

Who is the all-time best driver - Round 4

Wow, 50 comments on this blog, I think that is a new personal record for me, unfortunately it only translates into 16 total votes. Mikeyfan mad a valiant effort to get Waltrip into the final four, but came up a few votes short. I think that was the best matchup of the last round, and could have seen it go either way without a complaint. The other #1 seeds beat their competition decisively.

#1 Richard Petty 14 vs.#2 Cale Yarborough 2

#1 David Pearson 12 vs.#2 Bobby Allison 4

#1 Darrell Waltrip 7 vs.#2 Jeff Gordon 9

#1 Dale Earnhardt 14 vs.#2 Lee Petty 2

Now knowing your profession that argument should be enough facts to change your mind and take your "Fan Support" away from your driver and go with the best.

I would love to go with the best, but unfortunately these 8 drivers are the only ones left that I can vote for.

Who is the all-time best driver - Round 4

JG, The field size wasn't all that different.  Most were between 36 and 42 with a few being at 31.  And I'm not dissing Jeff at all, I am just pointing out that those who never saw DW race in the late 70's through the 80's never saw one of the best there was.  And in my opinion and the stats prove it out.  Jeff was not as Good as DW.

What I find amazing is people talk about the competition, yet DW raced against Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough, Bobby Allison, Tim Richmond, Dale Earnhardt, Terry Labonte, Neil Bonnet, Davey Allison, the list of what everyone considers the outstanding drivers ever in NASCAR and he dominated them in the 80's   And As Bluejay pointed out,  he did it on skinnier tires, Bias Ply Tires, Slower pit stops store bought shocks, and cars that would not be considered aerodynamic.

So to say getting a top 5 or 10 against the drivers and with the equipment was easier,  Well, I think you might have your prejudice showing just a little.

Jeff is a top 10 of all time I would rank him 6th, but no higher that than at this point in time.

MIkeyfan you forgot a very important fact.. FIELD SIZE.. Gordon has had to compete against mostly 43 car fields while DW seen a lot of 20-30 car fields which would make a top 5 or top 10 much easier to accomplish.. not to mention getting a win.. or working your way around a short track if the fields are half the size of todays fields.. Does Gordon have to hit the wall to get his deserved recognition..

Who is the all-time best driver - Round 4

Jak, your disappointing me.  First Brian tries to compare the two drivers by age and you state that, that isn't a good enough argument you need to compare their better years to determine which one is best.

Well, I presented the argument by comparing their best 10 years in a row.  Guess what DW wins.  In fact with 39 less races he had more top 5's and 10's with the same number of wins.  So if you take the stats that were accumulated and added 39 more races to DW over his best 10 years you would come up with about another 8 wins, 23 top 5's and 28 top 10's making DW's stats as follows:

75 wins, 205 top 5's and 244 Top 10's.  Compared to Jeffs 67 Wins, 177 Top 5's and 230 Top 10's.

Now knowing your profession that argument should be enough facts to change your mind and take your "Fan Support" away from your driver and go with the best.

I can't believe it, but I'm with Mikeyfan on this one.

Don't worry Brian, no one else will believe it either.  They will just think you hit your head on something.
