Who is the all-time best driver - Round 5

OK, now here we are at the Final Four. Who will move on, who loses out. I didn't notice it when I set up the groups, but this round pits some old school drivers against each other, and two modern era drivers against each other, guaranteeing that the finals will have a driver from each era. If I was choosing, I think my final 4 would have wound up just like this. I know many people consider David Pearson the best of all time, can he beat The King. And of course from a fan perspective the Gordon/Earnhardt battle should be very interesting. I am a Earnhardt fan, and I am happy to see him still alive, can he make it onto the finals?

Old School

#1 Richard Petty vs. #1 David Pearson

Modern Era

#1 Dale Earnhardt vs. #2 Jeff Gordon

Who is the all-time best driver - Round 5

Very close round this time. As expected the Earnhardt vs. Gordon matchup went down to the last vote. Petty edged out Pearson 11-8, Gordon beat Earnhardt 10-9.

Time to move onto the finals.

Pearson and Gordon.

I'd say more, but I had some major oral surgery on Friday, and I just went on here for a minute to make my picks...and make sure about fantasy stuff for tomorrow.

Who is the all-time best driver - Round 5

Although Petty has the championships, Pearson has pretty amazing numbers for having run far fewer races.   I think it's a tough call, but I give the edge to Pearson.

I see the biggest difference in Earhardt and Gordon to be their driving styles.  Jr. once described his dad's style of racing as "a bull in a china shop," Gordon, on the other hand, has always had a smoother style.  I've watched him makes moves in a race car that were like watching surgical precision.  I don't think anyone can dispute that both are great drivers, but  I find it hard to compare them directly due to the striking differences in the way they each got around the track.  So what's tougher--crashing one's way to victory lane, or slicing?  Each just requires a different skill set, IMO.   For me, I've always appreciated Gordon's style of driving more, so he gets my vote.

Who is the all-time best driver - Round 5

Old School

#1 Richard Petty vs. #1 David Pearson

He's the KING!!! He is the mark in the sport like Jordan in Basketball. It will take a lot for another to take his place.

Modern Era

#1 Dale Earnhardt vs. #2 Jeff Gordon

This one was tough!! Dale was a good driver and a ton of fun to watch. He brought excitement and a ton of passion to the track. You can't even take that from him. Gordon was the beginning of a new breed in the sport. He was talent from a source not usually tied to NASCAR of the day. No one can deny his ability to win. In the early years he dominated the track and even Sr. himself gave him respect (although many E. fans would deny it!) Not only could he drive be he exploded the sport to a new fan base and help push NASCAR to where it is today in the sports market. I know, You hate him or you love him, but the simple fact is, he can drive!

I think this is the match up we all anticipated. Two men enter. one man leaves!

Who is the all-time best driver - Round 5

At this point, all these drivers are great.

I grew up an Earnhardt fan so I'm biased as far as that particular matchup is concerned. Depending on how one chose to break down the stats, a compelling case could really be made for either driver.

Ditto Petty vs. Pearson. But I gotta side with Petty on this one. It's too bad Pearson didn't drive more than four full seasons

So I advance Earnhardt and Petty.

Who is the all-time best driver - Round 5

The first one is tough, but I think I have to go with PEARSON over Petty.  The Silver Fox and Richard both raced in a era when there were more than one points paying race per week.  Petty often went to races to avoid some of the top competition.  Take into account what Pearson did driving part time and that is the clincher.  This one was not an easy choice but, Pearson gets the nod.  Pearson was crafty and often won on talent and hard work, not necessarily the quality of his equipment.

Now the second choice is easy...Dale Earnhardt in a landslide over Jeff Gordon.  Lots of factors make this easy.  1)  Earnhardt won two, and arguably three championships with start-up teams that weren't firmly established.  Sr. won his first championship in his second year in the top circut, Earnhardt consistently finished in the top ten of the points, save one season for most of career.  Earnhardt was successful with several different crew chiefs, something Gordo has seemed to struggle with as of late.  Gordon came into the series with a silver platter...well establsihed team, DAMN good crew chief (the reason he had so many wins early on), and tons of funding to back him.  Sr. brought NASCAR to the forefront of the sports world.  He COMMANDED fear AND respect.  Something Gordo has yet to accomplish.  Besides, even Gordo admitted he learned more from Earnhardt than anybody else!

Modern Era

I'm habing some computer issues and trying to get them worked out. I have thought for a long time that David Pearson was the best driver in NASCAR and I will continue to say it. Both selections were tough just as the DW Vs Jeff Gordon last round. I read a couple of posts on the htread on the racing board and I agree Cowboys, that is't hard to compare eras. I'll try to catch up later but coming home from the Kentucky trip and having some computer issues is not what I had planned on. Just another obstacle I have to clear.

It will be interesting to read all the comments from this thread and the previous thread. Sooner or later I'll get some time. Thanks again Section for doing this...bluejay
