Who is the all-time best driver - Round 5

OK, now here we are at the Final Four. Who will move on, who loses out. I didn't notice it when I set up the groups, but this round pits some old school drivers against each other, and two modern era drivers against each other, guaranteeing that the finals will have a driver from each era. If I was choosing, I think my final 4 would have wound up just like this. I know many people consider David Pearson the best of all time, can he beat The King. And of course from a fan perspective the Gordon/Earnhardt battle should be very interesting. I am a Earnhardt fan, and I am happy to see him still alive, can he make it onto the finals?

Old School

#1 Richard Petty vs. #1 David Pearson

Modern Era

#1 Dale Earnhardt vs. #2 Jeff Gordon

Here is a link to the last round.

Well lets see-- is it just wins- or is it just championships

or is it some combination of both??

i give wins a little more props

so-- petty because his benchmark will never be topped

and gordo- because he just passed dale on the win list

looking at the old links and rounds would of liked to see cale y make it to the final-- think jimmie is going to match him at his 3peat performance

cheers

Even though The King has one of those records that will probably never be broken with his 200 wins, kind of like Cy Young's 532 wins, I don't think that David Pearson ever got near enough respect for his driving ability.

Who is the all-time best driver - Round 5

In the end, I have to go for the two with all the championships, Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt.  Maybe other drivers had individual years or even two or three year runs better, but not overall better careers.  Above the individual stats, we need to look at the overall contributions of the drivers to the sport as a whole.  No two drivers since 1960 have contributed to the popularity and folklore of the sport than these two.  Love them or hate them they are the two 800 lb. gorillas of all the drivers who ever slid behind a wheel.  Maybe in 25 years we'll talk about Jimmy Johnson or Kyle Busch or some other driver not yet in the sport.  Now, the two with the seven championship trophies should be the finalists.  That will be one heck of a tough vote to make.

goofybird - You gotta choose one of the drivers, even if you don't like either of them. If you don't vote for both matchups, I won't count your vote. It would make it harder on me to be sure the counts are correct if people aren't voting for both matchups. I had a similar problem in the best track blogs, and wouldn't count the votes if someone didn't vote for all of the matchups.
