What is the best movie ever made? Round 1

I had a fair amount of success with my best track, and best driver series, so I thought I would start another one, but non-sports related. You can't really use stats to support your opinion in this one, even total box office can't be used since the price of tickets keep going up, it isn't really an accurate reflection of how good a movie actually is. To get the list, I just copied the top 100 list created by AFI. Some really good movies do not make the top 64 on their list, and some of the movies I never heard of, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be inlcuded, and the ones I thought should make the list still aren't here. Some noteables that are missing include, Saving Privat Ryan, Shawshank Redembtion, Forrest Gump, Good Fellas, Silence of the Lambs, and Disney's Fantasia.

So here you go, I kept the list in the original order 1-64, then made the top 4 1seeds, the next 4 2 seeds, and so on. Then to figure out the groups, a number the 1 seeds 1-4, then the 2 seeds 4-1, and grouped the movies using a snake method throughout. Not the most scientific way, and it involved the least amount of work for me, but it works.

The first round has some interesting matchups, is Schindler's List better than Rocky, ET vs King Kong, 2001: A Space Oddyssy vs Lord of the Rings, Psycho vs. West Side Story,

Be sure to let others know about this, the driver series resulted in a bunch of posts, but the actual votes were in the teens for most rounds.

What is the best movie ever made? Round 1

Hey, Section, I just read your intro to the blog. Duh! That's what I get for not looking before I leap. I didn't know the list had been updated, too. I'll have to look around and check out the updates.

What is the best movie ever made? Round 1

Final tallies are in. Some close races, some blowouts, only 1 tie. In a case of a tie, I cast a vote for my choice, and it moves on to the next round. Here are the results I cam up with. What is the best movie ever made? Round 1

From what I've seen so far, there seems to be a general concensus to the more modern films. That's not exactly bad, just an observation. I guess it boils down to what kind of films a person enjoys most - and films with favorite actors.

There are actors who are favorites of mine that make the film just that much better. Same in reverse. For instance - I wouldn't watch a film with Barbara Striesand in it if you paid me. I don't care how good the film critics and everyone else says it is, I'm not watching it. There - my exhaulted opinion has been stated for one and all to "ooo and ahh" over. (Please don't take that last statement seriously)

Some tough picks here Section. One of the hardest for me was the #3 Vs #14 match-up in the West. I had to go with the timeless classic Wizard of Oz over one of Hitchcocks' finest North by Northwest. I also see two of my all time favorites (Star Wars & It's a Wonderful Life) are in the same bracket. Hopefully one of them will make it all the way to the finals...bluejay

What is the best movie ever made? Round 1

Yoko - I never saw thr seven samurai, but do recognise the impact it made on cinema. I could be wrong, but wasn't it a foreign made film? The list I used is only American made films, which most likely explains it's absence.

stgrlee-Thanks for coming to my defense, but I knew that Yoko was just jerking my chain. Once you get to know me better, you will know I dish it out to others, so I don't mind getting it back.

What is the best movie ever made? Round 1

stgrlee, yeah I read section's original blog.  I just like giving him a hard time.   This is a next to impossible task, there are thousands of movies out there and favorites will only bring it down to the hundreds.

I like his picks, I also like DieHard, Field of Dreams, Platoon, Yojimbo/Fistful of Dollars, True Lies, etc.

I just went for the jugular and picked the best movie I could think of.   Section understands.  There's nothing like Slicing Samurai!

Yoko - I'm not "pounding on you", but Section stated at the beginning that the reference he used to rank and pair the films didn't have some of the films that are favorites of all of us. I guess that includes "Seven Samurai". Personally, I really enjoyed the film and should, by all criteria, have been included. I can think of several films that I, personally, think should have been included and some that are included aren't worth the time to watch the opening credits, but that's just me.

Section, I forgot to mention.  When you watch the Seven Samurai the main characters have to protect the East, the West, the North and the South.   The Samurai go on to defeat all four.
