What is the best movie ever made? Round 1

I had a fair amount of success with my best track, and best driver series, so I thought I would start another one, but non-sports related. You can't really use stats to support your opinion in this one, even total box office can't be used since the price of tickets keep going up, it isn't really an accurate reflection of how good a movie actually is. To get the list, I just copied the top 100 list created by AFI. Some really good movies do not make the top 64 on their list, and some of the movies I never heard of, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be inlcuded, and the ones I thought should make the list still aren't here. Some noteables that are missing include, Saving Privat Ryan, Shawshank Redembtion, Forrest Gump, Good Fellas, Silence of the Lambs, and Disney's Fantasia.

So here you go, I kept the list in the original order 1-64, then made the top 4 1seeds, the next 4 2 seeds, and so on. Then to figure out the groups, a number the 1 seeds 1-4, then the 2 seeds 4-1, and grouped the movies using a snake method throughout. Not the most scientific way, and it involved the least amount of work for me, but it works.

The first round has some interesting matchups, is Schindler's List better than Rocky, ET vs King Kong, 2001: A Space Oddyssy vs Lord of the Rings, Psycho vs. West Side Story,

Be sure to let others know about this, the driver series resulted in a bunch of posts, but the actual votes were in the teens for most rounds.

What is the best movie ever made? Round 1

Wow, section you are spouting off.  You have some of my favorite movies against each other in Round 1.  American Graffiti is a one of a kind as is Casablanca.  Casablanca has the top song As Time Goes By and American Graffiti has the top soundtrack next to the Sound of Music.

You are way off,

I do like Duck Soup but I do not consider it in the top 100 movies.  Bridge on the River Kwai was a Disney version of WWII internment, Holden and Guiness gave good performances but that was it, unless you like to whistle the marching song.

How can you leave off the most remade movie of all times The Seven Samurai?   Even Disney remade that as a cartoon, A Bug's Life.  Yes a small band of warrior bugs that have to save a village from brigands.

I'll just go ahead now and vote for the Seven Samurai thirty-two times not seven, because there are thirty-two matchups you made and the Seven Samurai slice up the competition every time.

The use of slow motion, sword duels, and the theme of the little guys against the big bad army-like mob was way ahead of its time.

Now how many of you forget Yul Brenner in The Magnificeint Seven?   Don't forget he went on to kick more ass as Chris in the sequels and then all those Adios Sabata spaghetti westerns.

What is the best movie ever made? Round 1

I can understand that Cat. I guess I just have a soft spot for WSS. When I wore a much younger man's clothes, I played Arab in a country playhouse production. Arab was the guy that danced while the rest of the gang sang "Cool". Played that part for 3 months - that was during the summer while in college, and no, I didn't major in theater. Just did it because I thought it would be fun and interesting. It was! One of the other films in the competition is another musical I really never liked - "Sound of Music". Overly long, although there were a couple of numbers I enjoy.

Yes, StgrLee, I do know a little bit about West Side Story, but I'm certainly no expert.   (As far as a 'modern times' Romeo and Juliet, I much prefer Baz Lurhmann' 1996 version.)  Despite having an appreciation for ballet in general, modern dance, per se is not really a favorite of mine.  Perhaps that's why dancing animals have never fazed me, but the tough-guy gang members going through their dance routines just never worked, not for me anyway.

What is the best movie ever made? Round 1

I'm just curious and not being judgemental in the least.

Those of you who didn't vote for "Intolerance" - have you seen the film or did you just vote for "Sunset Blvd" because it was familiar or newer? Same for "The General".

I know most people don't take the time to watch the very early films. If you are one of those, you are missing out on some very extraordinary stuff.

To Cat - "The West Side Story" is a modern ballet and no different than seeing animals dance in some of the greatest ballets. The "dancing gangs" are an intrinsic part of the story as it is really "Romeo & Juliet" set in modern times - as I'm sure you knew anyway. Just wanted to make that point.

To everyone who didn't vote for "Shane". How could you not looooove Brandon DeWilde crying for Shane to come back as Shane rode off into the sunset? (tongue in cheek here). Shane is still one of the best westerns made.

COMMENTS

The West Division has the only "tie" that I can see. I really enjoyed them both and would most likely pick them both if they were paired against another film. The rest of you will have to decide that one.

I like Westerns, most musicals and films that have some history involved, so you will better understand my picks. I'm not very fond of old comedies and dislike the Marx Brothers, Abbott & Costello, etc. However, I really like the "Our Gang" / Little Rascals".

Science Fi is another area where the film had better be good or forget it. War films, ditto. Was never a big fan of Bogart but liked him in "African Queen".

I picked "Raging Bull" because it is the lessor of two evils. I didn't really like either film all that much. That's not to say I don't like sports movies. I love them but they also fall into that catagory of "they better be good".

There are very few films in the list that I would pick over "Gone With The Wind". That film is still in my Top 5.

Mr. Smith vs. Dr. Strangelove was a very tough choice as I enjoyed both of them. I gave the nod to "Strangelove" based on Peter Sellers' triple performance. That guy was incredible.

As for Snow White getting the nod, I'll almost always pick a Disney film over anything else. Not because of the story but because of my fascination with traditional animation. No one could do it better than Disney. My all time favorite film is "Fantasia".

Great idea Section. you would get 10 stars if that was allowed.
